Hi. I came across this term "lay up expiry date". My friend told me that means I have to re-register the bike as it has been scrapped before. I still don't get what that means. I've looked around onemotoring.com.sg and been reading about de-registering and all that but I STILL don't get it. Anyone care to enlighten?

a scrap bike can never be re register again .

in short lay out mean keep the bike on a private place ,without valid road tax for a period of time at a cost of $5.25 for 1 year .max can do 3 years.

dont understand teh term lay up expiry date ,as i dont knwo what information u c or what u want to know .

mostly prone u to go lay up th paper work again or ask u go make it on the road or else it will be automatic deregister

ahh...I see. I think it's a bit clearer now. Cos the bike I saw was in bike shop and I check the transfer fee at LTA and that's what appeared. So I'm guessing the bikes has been laid up and the expiry date is when it'll end. After that it can't be re-registered again. So again I'm guessing the bike has been in the shop for at 1-3 years. Thanks Yoshi. The fog has been lifted.

it can be reigister on the road unless it overshot the 3 year lay up period.

lay up mean the coe is still running and can still be on the road by getting insuarnce and road tax .

anyone deal with laid up before? got some questions to ask:

- laid up the bike can it be laid up in HDB car park? (willing to pay HDB parking)

- able to transfer the ownership to a non-licensed rider? cos bike is laid up and not riding at the moment till next mth. or the new owner still need insurance? (bike still has road tax till march, but intending to lay out max 1-2mths)

- cost of laid up. $5.25 incl. GST?

I've deal with laid up bikes before,

Basically,a bike can be transferred to anyone with or without license, with or without insurance for a cost of $5.25. Bike is to be garaged and towed if it needs to be anywhere.

To cancel a lay up, you are required to tow the bike for inspection and get a valid road tax before riding on the roads.

*note- the penatly for riding a laid up bike is very severe, it's basically riding without road tax.

MUST GO FOR INSPECTION

simple reason , they wan to check ur bike whether still "fit" to travel safe on the road

Basically, you can sell a lay up bike to a person,

-The other party has to get his own insurance, after which towed the bike to the inspection centre. Upon transfering the ownership at LTA, he has to produce the Inspection cert(passed), insurance then he can cancel the lay up status. Lastly he has to buy the road tax, and the bike is ready to be on the road.

-Or if the other party doesn't mind, transfer to his name while under lay up status. Just go to LTA to get the transfer form and the change of lay up address to the new owner's address and you're done.

Hope this helps:smile:

Aiyah. I thought can lay up without COE. Now COE so expensive, was thinking of laying off my bike on its tenth year and "unlay" it later!

:slapforehead: :slapforehead: :slapforehead:

if u wanna ride a laid-up bike , u must un-lay the bike 1st mah

to ride a bike legally on the road need road tax and insurance

1. Tow the bike to inspection center.

2. Pass the inspection first

3. Bring the inspection cert if u pass to LTA.

4. Have a valid insurance( means u need 2 buy insurance )

5. Then with a valid insurance & inspection cert, u can renew road tax

this is very clear already if u still unsure PLS call LTA hotline

In the process, only if u have valid insurance & road tax den u can ride the bike

= U cannot ride the bike at all unless u have renew/ buy new road tax

Yes it can be done. I transfered to a person without a license. Thus, he has no insurance/2b/etc so i transfer the bike to him under lay up status since a person without license can own a bike.

-Regarding whether if a person with license is willing to transfer ownership with a lay up bike it's up to you and the agreement with the new owner. Who knows some new owner would prefer the ex-owner to go through the process of cancelling lay up before transferring to him.:goodluck:
