I don't see any reasons of getting a 04 instead maybe the price is better than 06. For both machines, almost the same.

The 2004 R1 produces a stated 172 hp (128 kW) at the crankshaft (excluding RamAir,180 with the ram air)

 

In 06, Yamaha is now rated with 180 hp (130 kW) at the flywheel. In addition, the swingarm was extended 20 mm longer due to acceleration instability.

add to that, the decals are also different. choose wisely the colour of ur choice!

 

just be aware that 04-06 is still better than all other R1s made. do not buy the 07-08... problematic bikes!

2002-2003 : No major problems (AIE/oldtree feel free to add)

 

2004-2006 : TPS problem, heat

 

2007-2008 : Unexpected stalling, throttle lag (US models only), Cracking of headlight/rearset, even more heat

 

2009- : Too much low-end grunt, wheelie-happy
