Hey guys, recently went down to motoworld for some shopping.

saw a few of their perforated leather jackets on sale. seems to be pretty decent, but i am having second thoughts about getting it with sg's weather.

so i am checking with you guys here, anyone owns a perforated leather jacket? is it cool or breathable enough for daily sg weather?

mesh vs leather, which has better abrasion protection in event of off bike experience?

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

Mesh will always be cooler. Leather will offer much better protection against mesh. Mesh will not last a couple of meters sliding on tarmac.

Past: KDX200, LC4 400, LC4 620, GSXR750WR

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator

that taichi perforated leather jacket? i love it, would love to get it but current budget does not allow me to... it is retailing at $500. quite expensive for a jacket... my current mesh taichi jacket cost me $260...

leather will offer better protection but is not as cooling and breathable as mesh....

I have both. I bought a River Road Perforated last month in size 46. Its sleeves were too long, but I wanted it a bit baggy as for ventilation and my big stomach so had the sleeves shorted.

I wear it in the mornings to work, yes its hotter. It weighs almost 3 kg. Compared it to my mesh (Joe Rocket), the mesh feels like wearing next to nothing (which I guess it is). But when you wearing it and riding, really dont notice it. Only when at lights in the daytime. As I said, I have a 20km commute to work in the morning and rode to KL last weekend and I really dont mind the extra weight.

Can purchase online through real hogs(US$250). shipping was US$28. US$ is weak aso cheap to order online!

As I invested almost S$400 for the leather jacket, so will keep wearing it. See pics.

nice. but i have read reviews by others that commented some perforated leathers are much more breathable than mesh?

could it be due to the thickness?

i have only worn perforated one piece suit and its really cold riding at night.

Never worn it in daytime tho.

Daytime riding jacket i wear astar waterproof breathable textile jacket. Quite hot at red lights, cooling when moving.

But i heard mesh also hot at red lights.

Another jacket i've worn is the cheaper bell leathers. Not as hot as the astar wp jackets when stopping, yet not as coolin when moving too.

I wear a Vanson perforated leather jacket every day for commuting to work. And it is much cooler than any of my mesh jackets I had before.

See the pictures, and you can see that the perforations are well-cut which means the air flows through well. For perforated leather, there's different kinds, and so far the best that I can find are the Vansons.

What I like about the perforated leather jacket is that does not suffer from the buffering than you can get from a mesh jacket at higher speed. And leather is definitely more protective than mesh.

I have one Vanson fully perforated leather jacket for sale if anyone is interested. Small size, fits those with chest 36-38 inches. I outgrew that and brought another one a size bigger.

I have 2 perforated leather jackets and a mesh jacket.

The coolest is Dainese perforated leather jacket follow by A-Stars mesh and the lousiest is A-Stars perforated leather jacket.

In my opinion, it is the material and design of the jacket that matters. Perforated leathers can be cooler or warmer than a mesh :thirsty:

Well, if a perforated leather is more cooling then mesh, then probably wouldnt want that leather as its too thin/holes are too big. Mesh should always be cooler as its mesh! I have seen some combo leather/mesh that are pretty good as only put leather in important areas. So that may be worth considering.

All in all, I am a heavy guy who sweats a lot and rides a harley that puts out even more heat. So if I can wear a leather jacket, then most anyone can.

The one question I do have, how does leather hold up in the SG rain? I havent been caught out in a downpour - yet. I treat my coat with some leather products that say it makes it water repellent.

My mesh jacket is not blocking the sun as effective as the leathers. While the mesh jacket flows better, I feel cooler in the perforated leathers especially riding under the hot sun. No quantifiable data to support this, just my personal observations :)

Well, it holds lots of water. My leather jackets soak up rain water like a sponge, the perforation make it worse. It will weight a kilogram or two more when I reached home.

Leather is always better. It keeps you cool on a hot day and keeps you comfortable on a chilly night. Mesh is rubbish. I have a mesh jacket and the only time I wore it was before I bought my leather jacket!

Leather is not as hot as some people think. If you can find a bike with a leather seat, try touching the seat and touch a seat wrapped in vinyl on a hot day. You will find the leather is not as hot and you can leave your hand on the seat whereas the vinyl will immediately sting.

BTW, Vanson makes extremely good leather jackets! One of the few still being made in the USA.

It's your damn bike, wash it yourself! You rinse your own mouth after you eat, don't you?

Actually not necessarily so :) The leather on the Vanson jacket that I have is competition weight leather, and it is thicker and stronger than any of the other not perforated leather jackets that I have. Its looks like it is even hard to cut with scissors!

I have other brands perforated leather jackets as well like Alpinestars, and they are not as good and don't flow as much air as the Vanson.

Most of the time when commuting to work with the jacket and long sleeves shirt below I don't even get any sweat (unlike mesh), unless kena stuck in long traffic jams.

Wow, that good huh? I've always thought that leather (perforated or not) is always hotter compared to mesh. I'm using a mesh jacket to commute to work, and i do sweat sometimes.

If it breathes better than mesh, and provides more protection than mesh, i see no reason why we should not be wearing leathers in the first place. Maybe cause its more expensive, bulky and heavier that is.

Never heard of the Vanson brand before bro. Where did u buy it from bro? Any local dealer? Or do we have to resort to purchasing it online? I'm not a fan of buying jackets/helmets/gloves/apparel online. I'd rather go to a shop and have a proper fitting before committing to a potentially expensive purchase.

Sadly no local dealer for Vanson. Vanson is made in the USA, have to order online. Price not cheap, but quality is really the best I have tried, and it looks like it can last a lifetime. Even the top brands like Alpinestars, Dainese, etc are not made in Italy or Europe.

I can't afford to buy them new, its too expensive, their cheapest leather jacket starts from about USD$300 if I'm not mistaken. I had to buy used ones from Ebay. Sizing is quite accurate, if your chest size is 38 inches, buy size 38 it will fit nicely, unless body odd shape.

Check out this link with close-ups pics of the perforated leather jacket. You can really see the quality.

p.s. I don't work for Vanson! Just a very happy customer

My Dainese jacket is made in Italy, probably the last batch that bears the "Made in Italy" tag. I have checked out a few later Dainese jackets that made in eastern Europe countries, the standard has dropped significantly. It has steered me away and starts looking at other brands like Vanson, Langlitz, Kushitani, Belstaff and etc :thirsty:

Yeah nowadays, most of the top brands are not longer made in their country of origin, but still charging top dollar :(

can i take that perforated leather jackets, or simply leather jackets, for the matter, often do not come with armor? elbow, shoulder, back, chest etc..

in that sense, is armor better or is "thicker skin" better?

Most do. Need to check. My river road came with armor, but was the soft spngy kind so replaced it with the CE armour that was in my mesh. All fit except the back, which I did not want any way.

Btw, my jacket is made with from water buffalo hide, so a bit thicker. But made in Pakistan.
