Hi, im a newbie here. Judging from the thread, i doubt it'll be easy for those who even have the necessary cert and experience. I have NITEC in Building Drafting (Civil & Structural) from ITE Balestier. Graduated long ago in 2004. I intend to embark my career in this safety line. Can you guys help me out? I hv zero experience. What cert shld i 1st get? For career progression, what shld i enrol later? Heard there's funding for this safety courses at NTUC Learning Hub, but how do we apply for it? Must we be employ 1st? Anyway, what is the necessary cert one need to hv to become safety officer. Thank you. Your reply is greatly appreciated.

For Safety Officer it shall be a license given by MOM. What I always tell people is that think about any of your relatives or close friends already in these industries that require SO. Depend on their weight in the company, they might be a good help. It is either you join a consultancy when the market is blooming or pull the correct string to get in... or join a small time company because they got a job which require SO... The last option is not a bad idea because as long u got in, know what is it all about all things will naturally be in place. If you don't get started, a course certificate will not get u anywhere...

anyone heard of shell's collaboration with safety@work for the 'trainee safety advisor program'? in fact today at 0900hrs is the briefing for the 200+ shortlisted candidates out of 1000+ applicants..but they're gonna trim it until 15-17 ppl only..i'm shortlisted but i can't go due to work commitments..currently am a wshc but i'm not sure if i'm letting go of a golden opportunity..but frm wad i know is that after the 2yrs traineeship, they will still just be a safety supervisor..so any feedbacks anyone?

Hmmm... to see it in another way... shell engage safety@work to supply safety. Shell pay safety@work a good amount of $$ and safety@work pay you peanuts for 2 years. After 2 years u want to hop boat only to find that there is a clause saying that u cannot work for competitors for blar blar years. You want to join the construction but know nothing about it cause you from process side. So you try joining the pharmaceutical and found out that they use their own internal staff attend some courses and become SS/SC in the plant.

So you decided to stay in shell only to find that they pay you lesser than a process plant junior engineer for being a SC. I'm just uttering rubbish and might be totally wrong.

my cousin was 1 of the 'lucky' ones from safety @ work's 1st apprenticeship prog with shell bukom project in 2008.now, he's out of a job n working in logistics.safety @work sent my cousin n his colleagues for metal scaffold erector course, certificate in nebosh n some other minor courses.his basic was $1800 plus a $200 allowance.im not sure abt the allowance part.safety@work doesnt pay that much..their salary isnt competitive for the sole reason that u r among the 20 or so ppl out of thousands of applicants to work for a prestigious project, that they send u for various courses and that u might not be able 2 get such an apportunity again to work in a petrochemical environment.of course they pay u peanuts.these jobs are for newbies.no experienced WSHO/WSHC/WSHS would wana trade their high-paying jobs for a job like that..

what happens once the project is over?theres no guarantee that u'll be hired on a permanent basis.

I was a bit out of shape that day and uttered rubbish... Don't get affected by my words... if anyone wanted to sacrifice a bit and join big project your hard work might pay off after the project... I have a friend working in Sembawang shipyard for 6 years drawing 1800++... Now if you enter JI and look to your right you will see a ship at FPSO conversion. He's inside now drawing 8000++ a month as SC not SO!

I still stand on my own words as, "In safety line especially singapore, it's about who you know and NOT about what you know."

petro chem work wise will be heavier on maintenance work hazards... e.g flange opening procedures, blah blah, residual pressure hazards.... tok alot about flash point and stuffs... Hazop...

but if you are talking about constructing petrochem plant then that is diff story... I shall say easier than shipyard... but it became difficult due to short handed... construction won't hire a big team to run the site... if possible or the client didn't make noise... they wish to make 1 safety apply the whole 16 elements... haha
