noted bro. thanks for the input. wad i was informed by them was they hv a management trainee scheme, which is sponsored plus bond. another one is a normal one without course sponsorship n bond. as for me, i'm currently doing my sdwsh on my own. so, most probably i wont take up the bond scheme. but if u dun mind, can u give me the range of salary if i just enter as an assistant safety officer? n how much keppel is paying the rso? u can pm me too, for privacy wise. thank u so much bro.

Bro, after some years of grinding in Shipyard, you will become very steady... but most ppl in shipyard seems to stay in shipyard thru out their career... It a place that the pay range can be very wide... fr 1800 - 12000 also have... if you have not married w/o much commitment, go for it! Like for me with a family commitment, it really difficult to draw 2k salary again... Already stand up I can squat down... but provided my 2 kids and wife squat together... not a good choice for me...

hmm ok thanks for the advice bro. anyway, how different is the nature of work of a shipyard and a rigbuilding yard? very similar? no?

cant compare big yard practises with others....even keppel yards itself got alot different practises but one main goal...the main yard like tuas got alot more systems then its sister yards...true working in shipyard can learnt alot...for me, it a matter of preferences...not all ppl worked in shipyards stayed dere for long ...like i said..long working hours, work pressure n not to mentioned deadlines...its a matter of balance...me also opening up other opportunities if one comes along...cheers

anybody knows the range that keppel pay their rso? i urgently need to know. anybody? thanks in advance!

bro, go for interview lah. they constantly looking for wsho. keppel is a big group, which business units are you referring to. i might be able to help. please indicate your years of experience, background, education, skill set, etc.

a wsho cert and expect a big pay is not practical and will be deemed unreasonable. not only in keppel, elsewhere applies.

I was a bit out of shape that day and uttered rubbish... Don't get affected by my words... if anyone wanted to sacrifice a bit and join big project your hard work might pay off after the project... I have a friend working in Sembawang shipyard for 6 years drawing 1800++... Now if you enter JI and look to your right you will see a ship at FPSO conversion. He's inside now drawing 8000++ a month as SC not SO!

I still stand on my own words as, "In safety line especially singapore, it's about who you know and NOT about what you know."

great saying man. mm suggested otherwise, life is all about who knows you. if only, mm or sm or pm knows me lah...

Hi, im a newbie here. Judging from the thread, i doubt it'll be easy for those who even have the necessary cert and experience. I have NITEC in Building Drafting (Civil & Structural) from ITE Balestier. Graduated long ago in 2004. I intend to embark my career in this safety line. Can you guys help me out? I hv zero experience. What cert shld i 1st get? For career progression, what shld i enrol later? Heard there's funding for this safety courses at NTUC Learning Hub, but how do we apply for it? Must we be employ 1st? Anyway, what is the necessary cert one need to hv to become safety officer. Thank you. Your reply is greatly appreciated.

you should try to google or yahoo search for more info on wsho. however, if the search bring you to this site, i am sorry. does this thread looks like a career consultancy firm or career centre or what?

it's just a group of wsho trying to make ends meet and for some, trying hard to land a decent safety job.

if we have given you the impression that safety profession is a fantastic job with big pay check, we are dammed sorry.

some might be earning big bucks but that has got nothing to do with having a wsho cert and definitely not nebosh bullsh*t.

thot that might clear some doubts for you. look elsewhere, this safety line has been flooded with low skill local and foreign talents alike.

i went for interview already bro. keppel fels. assistant hse officer(management trainee scheme). sponsor for courses etc and bond 3 yrs. i'm currently working as wshc for consultant. my experience less than a year, considering this offer as it's a direct company and i believe it's an excellent platform to learn the ropes.

i'm an engineering dip holder frm local poly. bcos i hv a friend frm keppel shipyard, and he told me they pay their manaagement trainee(assistant safety officer) ard $2800 upon becoming rso. is that considered reasonable? please provide your views. thank you so much bro.

Haha... that's what mm says... but if we are not somebody in the first place, who the f wants to know us? LOL e.g. - I know this uncle as a E&I specialist, asked him how he got to where he is now... he said 6 years ago he frequent a pub in town which the off-shorers hang out... did some socializing and landed him with 18k USD off shore job for couple of years... now stationed on-shore with 7k SGD... contented...

e.g 2 - A fren of mine a senior safety guy with only BCSS until today! Now working in a major EPC construction company drawing 5k+ as a SS... and he frequently have lobang for job... funny isn't it...

Who u know or who interested to know u... might really help in your career...

I'm sorry... I think I have over do it... CSTAY is right... I'm giving the wrong impression to outsider...

Note that there are many SC still drawing below 3k today...

Those above are the few ones abnormal cases...

It is also true that if you are really interested and ready for the hardship... welcome to join us..

otherwise, we are already flooded with incompetent locals and foreign talents...

i have to agree with that statement bro. alot of misconceptions that safety personnels are paid tons and shake leg everyday. ppl don't realise just how heavy the responsibilities are. alot of hardship and dedication hv to be put in, especially when just starting out. like the saying goes, no pain, no gain. i hv seen alot of rso who know nuts! and its actually the ss and sc that is controlling them. such a shame.

hmmz now they increased the bond to 3 yr huh?...2800 wen u become RSO...n do check how much you have to pay if u break bond...keppel fels is betta den other keppel shipyards..and they deal mostly oil rigs platforms...gd or not u must decice urself ..cos once u signed, u will probably staying foe at least 3 yrs..money is not always a drive but the job itself is vital if you already commited..

$2,800 is not bad a pay when you become a registered WSHO. but if you were to compare with your peers (of the same age, same experience) from the consultancy firms, you may be discouraged and disappointed even before you end your 3-year bond.

we love to compare, don't we? some say life is hard, i say compare to what?

but ok lah, you still young (and hopefully handsome), so give yourself 3 years (you should still be young and handsome). if you love keppel, stay. if not, you have enough credential to move on. bear in mind that keppel is a top employer to be desired. they gave away 9 months of bonus last year. they are also moving toward a company with world class safety standard. so that will make your safety career more meaningful.
