Hi Bro,

Thanks for replying to my question, maybe I did not ask correctly or not detailed enough.

I've read and it is real helpful but for my case, I've enrolled myself to go for the course BSCC. I've tried sending my CV for jobs like "Project supervisor & site supervisor". However no response maybe due to no experience. Feeling sad! LOL!

I'm quite worried about the starting salary due to I'm currently a father of 2 currently and I need to see if the salary will be able to sustain my current liabilities, might also need a 2nd job if the salary is insufficient. Hopefully plan good and move on the the safety line with u guys!

If there's any job openings pls do let me know..

Thank you all in advance. :cheer:

hi bro,

if you read from page 1 of this thread, you will not post this question on how you should start your safety profession.

in fact, if you were to read the last few posts by halflight, you would gain much insight about how to make the switch with least pain. kudos to halflight, i will never be that meticulous in putting my experience in writing. you may hope that halflight is camping on this thread and read your post right now.

the traits of being a good safety professional is his resourcefulness which i believe you are lacking at his point, but hope that you will build up from here.

asking questions without first reading up may prove fatal.

if you have read up the pages and get pissed off from me saying you did not, you ought to read 10 more times to understand.

anyway, you are only 29. halflight was 38 when he made the switch. you have exactly 9 years to read, understand and decide to make the switch. take your time.

my boss, who is also a safety professional, made his career switch at the age of 42. he is making more than 30k a month now. you seriously want to let the starting pay deter you from joining this career?

wow, a father of 2 and wanting to switch career. respect.

been there, done that. now i have 3 grown up children.

looking at the situation, your going will be tough.

but don't give up. you only need one opportunity to give you that experience.

suggest you join a construction company first, disregarding the role, then seize any opportunity to get on site.

wish you all the best.

To start off, I wish to make some corrections to the points stated in my previous post which I believe was out-dated.

It has been sounded out to me by a kind bro that from Aug 2013 onwards, applicants cannot gain direct entry into Level C immediately after their Level B unless they have the relevant WSH experience.

I have checked through the various websites (SP, NP, NTUC Learning Hub, BCA and SISO) and have seen the updated admission requirements. To prevent bros from getting misled by my earlier, outdated, information, I will summarize the new requirements:

  • At least 2 years of relevant WSH experience is required for those with a recognized diploma or degree
  • At least 2 years of post Level B (Advanced Certificate in WSH) WSH related experience for those without a recognized diploma or degree

This has been verified by several trainers that I have spoken with in my SDOH and Level D courses.

---

Aside to cstay66,

Thank you for the kind compliments. All of us have some things we do better and some which we may not do as well. Organizing thoughts and putting them on paper happen to be an area that I am above average in.

And no, I don't really camp this thread very much. I happened to camp more during the period leading to CNY as I do have some free time on hand. Now it is business as usual so I will only be dropping in once a fortnight or so if I am not expecting any replies or posts.

---

v0dkaX,

Actually cstay66 is correct. If one has the will and determination to do something, he or she can get it to work even in the most adverse circumstances. Part of the process involves utilizing one's resourcefulness and initiatives to find out the answers.

If I were in your situation and I know (i) I do not have the experience to compete and (ii) I do not wish to compete on cost (i.e. lower pay demands by too much), I will compete on other levels such as providing value-added services, differentiation or quality.

Are you able to advice what may be a realistic starting pay?

Zero experience starting pay around $2500 to 3000. I completed my level C in Jan 2013, with that and zero experience I started job hunting. Got a job in a renowned facilities management company and got a little increment and was located in Singapore largest hospital. Left 4 months after I knew the EHS there is wayang kind and my manager belongs to those GFN where I can learn nothing from him. But my La Kopi skill increase alot till I might get diabetes if I continue on. Started job hunting again got into aviation. Now everyday wanna bang sia also no time. I am very happy, in aviation EHS is no joke, even first aid case will make you really busy.

My pay has increased 20% in 2013.

Starting pay for EHS is a bit low especially for those mid career change like me . I assure you in around 2 years, most EHS people increase their pay by 50% is very common. I also started my degree in Apr 2013 and half way through the course already. Of course I am the very lucky type, whereby zero EHS experience does not get a pay cut unlike many others.

You must have very strong values in EHS. I like this job because it is very challenging and most often you need to find solutions within the limit of company resources. Remember nothing is impossible and take small step at a time , as long you keep moving forward, you will somehow reach there. This is what I tell myself.

hi hachi,

good move.

similar scenario. but i started my safety career with zero safety experience and zero cert.

my starting pay was $1100 in 1994/1995. while awaiting for my cert, i had an offer for $2500.

when my cert arrived, $4500. 2 years later, $8000. all that happened in a short span of 5 years, in construction.

i thot i was lucky but many have experienced the same.

for those still working on it, press on.

Not sure about the experience part, but without Level C, you definitely cannot be a WSH Officer. Level B is WSH Coordinator.

Hi, hachi,

Since you find it not very hard to complete the assignments for Level A, B, C and D, do you mind providing me some guidance on my Level D assignments? At most I buy you a kopi. lolz.

I am in the Intake 27 at SP now. We have finished our lectures. I am catching up now, on trying to finish up all my assignments. :)

If it is not convenient, then never mind.

Thanks. :)

I did not say I have level D. I till C only. Maybe after my degree in OEHS can consider level D. Cos I do not have the experience to become auditor.

If you are in safety the degree is not that tough. Of course time and commitment are needed. FYI I have 2 very young kids age 2 and 4. My degree is from new castle, Australia . Location at PSB tiong bahru.

Hi seahmh, are you from SAF previously? Your nick rings a bell.. Seem to have chatted with you in the bike forum before. So you're in the safety industry now. I going to be in the industry soon as well.

Need some advise from the lau jiao. I was given a jobs offer to be a QHSE officer on board a drilling vessel. The jobs scope is closely related to a Safety officer, the difference is I need to focus more on the quality aspect. I am a Ex-Navy fellow. The scope they mentioned are no stranger to me. They consider I am experienced and only need to get myself well verse on the marine legislation. When being ask about how much I am requesting for my salary I'm rather stuck. Can any fellow biker friend able to share what can be a appropriate amount? And is there a good career prospect into this industry?

ask them to offer you rather. and you negotiate from there until you and the company are satisfied.

you ask all the lau Jiao here to give advice and you never give head or tail and you expect us to have a crystal ball in front of us to tell your success?

come give us more clues about you and the company?

1. what is your experience in safety and non-safety related field besides your ex-navy stint?

2. what is your education background?

3. are you a registered wsho?

4. when registered?

5. what is your last drawn pay?

6. how old are you?

7. what is your safety experience in the navy?

8. you got degree?

9. what marine business is the company?

10. what is the pay scale in that sector?

11. what is the staff strength in the company?

12. what is the revenue of the company?

13. local company or mnc?

14. what is their usual bonuses?

15. got 13th month?

16. what other benefits and welfare?

the faster you provide the answers, sure you will receive many advices.

if not, you will have no clue why no one reply you de.
