hi xiaogary

I apologise if this has been brought as I have not gone through the entire thread. Since you have stripped down to the header, a more permanent solution is to have it plated, ie. to chrome it. It should cost you no more than $90. From my experience, these off- the-shelf "hi-temp" sprays are only short term, especially the temperature is extremely high for 4-stroke engines. It's even hotter when you run your bike lean.

You shouldn't apply primer, even it's labelled high heat, beneath the black paint because when heated, they expand at different pace and that cause the paint surface to crack up. I have made that mistake, don't repeat it.

My friend pay $25 to spray in a Workshop. But $90 for chroming is not bad idea.

hi Demon,

can gimme or pm the address of the motorshop who does chroming of header?

If it costs less den $90, i think is definitely worth the price.

Imagine u can save the money and the time to spray the header to black and wait for a few hours and coat it again and again, just to make sure that it get enough coating..

it's not a motorbike shop, it's an electro-plating shop :

Name : meng kong electro-plating

Address : Blk 5066, Ang Mo Kio Industial Park 2, #01-1407

Not all metal can be chromed. If your pipe surface has irregularities, the chrome finishing wouldn't be smooth. Not all metal can be chromed, so the old man there will be able to advise you. When I was getting my parts plated, he's not so keen on doing bike parts, so you need to sweet talk him a bit.

hmm... i guess if any shop dealing & willing to do plating for bike parts would be easier...

i mean... no point everyone here goes there... sweet talk but ended up... cant get plating done on our bike.

the uncle must be thinking... how come suddenly so many bikers ask to do plating.

but then again if the demand is high & his willing to change his mindset that would be better still.

in the market, if you want to plate some components, ie. identical and in large quantity, it only costs a few dollar a piece. Most of these shops survive on such business, it's small margin so they need volume. Now you come in, with an exhaust header, they have never done plating on this item in their life, but the process is no different from any other. They are relunctant to take the job because they haven't a clue to charge for the service. Furthermore, it's a one-off item, which means their work-flow will be interrupted, translating to loss of productivity. That's where the sweet talk comes in. have a smoke with the old man. If he asked for $60, and you are satisfied with the quality of work, pay him $65. He has never turn me down for subsequent work. Just don't rush him. In fact, I did see more bike parts there now. In time to come, he will adjust his rates to match the market, it's the supply & demand dynamics at work. By then, I'll have to look for another shop.

If you want a shop that does plating for bike, there is such a shop just one block ahead away from this old man. Actually I enquired at that shop first, they charged about $200 to chrome a 4-1 header (probably for Super4 or equivalent). Since it's a project bike, I was willing to try cheaper but untested shop.

Something for S4 riders to know. The highest temp I recorded on the engine exhaust is 261degC. I used a infrared optical pyrometer to measure -->

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i86/tt6389/accessories/ExhaustTemp.jpg

I have seen chromed exhaust pipes rusting away. But how long the chrome can last - must ask those bikers with chromed exhaust. Maybe the chrome thickness plays a part here to retard corrosion. The thicker it is (longer duration during electroplating process) the more resilient it is from corrosion. Any electroplating expert here to correct me?

BTW, we discussed about spraying the exhaust pipe earlier. There was talk on necessity for hi-temp primer etc etc.

The exhaust pipe highest temp (261degC) is somewhere at the first exit from the engine block. What sort of hi-temp paint can withstand this temp? This picture below showing this brand - can withstand more than 500degC. Twice the limitations. The instruction says no need primer whatever--->

hi TT.. whre can i get that KRYLON paint? how much and any idea what other colors are there? Thanks

I bought a can of RJ high temp spray. available in black and "silver"

supposed to be able to withstand up to 1200degF (>600+degC)

Price range from 9 to 12 depending on where you buy. Mostly in the $10+ region for DIY shops in shopping centres. HDB paint shops might be cheaper.

bought it in a shop in Pioneer circles there - specialise in industrial paints. But any hi-temp paint that can withstand 261degC is sufficient.

If your primer is black colour, can just spray the primer only?

You must know what primer is for, it's for preparing the surface for painting. It's not a final coating, so don't use it as such if you want it to last.

so exactly is there any one with their whole pipe chromed? possible to flash a few pics here??

i guess many of us here have rusty pipes and willing to spend some $$ to get a hassle free quick fix. so showing some results will assure us the end result.
