Hi All,

I am not sure if there is a similar thread.

Recently I enquire with a bike shop about Shadow 400 and Steed 400, they mention to me that it is no longer in manufacture.

If the information is true, can anyone recommend any good and cheap to maintain Class 2A cruiser bike?

Cheers

AC

I assume you are taking your class 2B. actually i personally find cruiser being quite easy to squeeze through vehicle. becoz being low, when you are going to fall u can just use ur legs to support.

By the look of the Honda Shadow it looks massive. I wonder if an average built guy like me 5.5Ft tall and 65kgs can balance it. Phantom itself sometime if I am tired, I sometimes lose control after taking it off the side stand. Thats why I dont even think of upgrading to a 2A cruiser.

Also, I wonder how much more power you will get. I think huge weight will take away most of the power and you wont get the proportional gain in speed that you would expect.

Check out these 2 bikes:

Both weigh the same about 250 kgs. But you much more power with the 750CC and hence better power to weight ratio. So my suggestion, would be get class 2 and get the more powerful cruiser.

Funny thing is Honda Phantom has 6 gears while Shadow has 5! Also Phantom has rear disk brakes and Shadow has rear drum. With that huge weight travelling at 100+ speed imagine the momentum of the bike. I wonder how effective the drum brakes will be

I am about the same height & weight as you. I ride a Shadow 400 currently and a Phantom 200 previously. IMO, both bikes are equally easy to handle, with the Shadow having just a slice more ommph in power to-weight. It cruises comfortably, while the Phantom tends to be more "stressed" at cruising speeds. I also agree that the 750cc would be even better, but a 400cc is great value for $$ for Singapore traffic. Lets face it, you can never have enough hp, so a 750 is better than a 400 and a 1100 is better than a 750..... and so on and so forth.

5 gears on the Shadow gives it long enough legs for normal use. The Phantom needs more gears to hit faster speeds cos of the smaller engine, so no surprises there.

Drum brakes on the Shadow is enough to lock the rear wheels and have you slide into someones @$$, so its plenty sufficient for the weight. Keep a safe distance.

How about the resale value?

Lets face it, everyone will continue to upgrade.

My Shadow is a 1997 model. I daresay its fully depreciated, so the resale value has flattened out.

I could probably sell it at the same price that I bought it and still be able to find a buyer.

Upgrading? It depends. I went Phantom-Harley-Shadow.

Decided that a 1200cc is overkill for SG and I could better spend my $$ somewhere else, so traded the temperamental HD for the bulletproof Honda.

I still itch for more horsepower, but my practical side will always win the argument, so the Shadow is a good fit for my needs.

The delimma right now is I wanna get a Cruiser 2A, most probably what Jerrick recommended.

But my senior actually suggest to me to get a Super 4.

He mentions that Super 4 is cheap to maintain plus can be consider as a various type of bike due to it nature of being very easy to modify.

And not to mention, the demand is rather high.

So can all please give more advice to assist me in making this life-changing decision.

Bro, super 4 n Shadow is quite different. If you want speed , that go for super 4. I've ridden both and can feel the difference. Shadow is more relax and slower...and will be a head turner if you can maintain well and dress up nicely! I think Shadow is cheaper than S4 too! Of course I'm riding a Shadow now...lol

Bro, I'm riding phantom now and waiting for my 2A TP and initially thought of getting the shadow. But just decided that I will get my cl2 and go for cl2 cruisers instead. so in the meantime got a vespa to play around and past time while still holding on to the phantom.

But after seeing ur comments, having second thoughts... when u said 1200cc is an overkill for sg, do u mean its too powerful? I see most harley going similar speed or even slower than my phantom on expressways.. around 110km/hr on phantom meter.

I wanted to target either a harley, triumph, honday fury or a shadow 750 for my cl2 cruiser...

I re-read my posting and honestly, when I posted "1200cc is an overkill for sg", it was probably a case of transient sour grapes at the point of posting.:p

The 1200 was FUN to ride and nothing beats the feel of a big-bore V-Twin between your legs :D Is it too powerful for SG roads? Practically yes, but that's the whole point, isn't it. More horses = more fun!

I sold the HD becuase it was just too temperamental and needed too much care. It was an extravagance that I could afford, but when I had other financial needs, it was the logical thing to sacrifice. Would I get another Harley? Perhaps, when I have a healthy margin disposable cash and the missus says OK ;P

You only live once, so go for it.

HD temperamental? Darn.. i thought its a trouble free bike.. dats my main requirement.. I hate to spend time & money in workshops.. regular interval wear & tear replacement is acceptable although I expect significantly less frequent than a phantom.

So do HD in general needs more care or was your a spoilt brat?

I don't have an answer for you. I have only ever owned one.

My steed is serving me well (:

Brakes much better than my ta200.

A head turner too.

Ta200 - 140kg Steed400 ~240kg

ta200 35km per litre

steed 400 27km/L

Pick up steed is much better but not fantastic at the top speed.

Maintenance not much of a difference.

Franc,

From what I heard, is it true that S4 Maintenance is cheaper?

Which bike is easier to sell off?

My dream is HD.

Sorry, not sure abt maint of S4, as I borrowed my fren's S4 to ride sometimes only. As S4 is more popular which we can see a lot on the road, I believe it's easier to sell off.

S4 is faster. Fc is more or less the same. brakes better.

But if your heart is on a cruiser.... ;)
