Hi lunloon~ let me copy from my manual~

Oil level cannot be accurantely measured on a cold engine. For pre-ride inspection' date=' with motorcycle leaning on jiffy stand on ground level, oil should register on dipstick between arrows when engine is cold. Do not add oil to bring the level to the FULL mark on a COLDS engine[/size']

There are 2 pages of procedure on cold check & hot check~ but its just like checking on cars or other type of motorcycles...

I like this & hope I never see it or type it wrongly:

If it is necessary to add oil and Harley-Davidson oil is not available, use an oil certified for diesel engine. Acceptable diesel engine oil designations include: CF-4, CG-4, CH-4 and CI-4

.... o_O

Yes dipstick got two level, one low & high, low = cold check, high = hot check

side stand can check. No need to accurate, just roughly can already. I think it's check when engine cold and check when engine hot. Level should be in between the 2 indicators. At least that's the way I check for cars.

kiamh: I forgot, your sporty what year ah? I think even if wanna trade pipes with me cannot leh. Won't fit.

Oh anyway, i got the 2006 Clymer Manual for 1200XL, it says

SAE 10W/40 ambient operating temp = 40 deg F

SAE 20W/50 ambient operating temp = Above 40

SAE 50 ambient operating temp = above 60 deg F

SAE 60 ambient operating temp = above 80 deg F

so is it like not advisable to use SAE 10w/40 but should use the other 3 instead?

According to the manual, hot oil check can be done by starting the engine, idle for 1~2 minutes, off the engine then check for oil level

Yea darn. lol. But parts on ebay is dirt cheap for 03 and below. Go find some?

lun: I dunno about all the 10w45w50w25w or anything, but I know basically check oil when engine is cold, start your bike ride around abit let the engine warm up abit. swtich off engine and check. Leaving engine on and checking doesn't sound like a good idea. Oh make sure clean the dip stick before checking. hee. But so far my bike ok leh, no EO lost. Just do a regular change every 3-5k km
