If comparing a dyna engine and a softtail engine of the same year, both models puts out pretty much the same numbers. It is the drive train, gear ratios and also sprockets that differs between the dyna and the softtails and of course the frame as well.

Dynas are more rev happy and will be able to have longer 1st and 2nd gears. Soft tails on the other hand are more crusing happy so have very short (almost useless) 1st and 2nd gears. Handling wise, the dyna would defintely have one up against the softtails. (i am referring to both stock machines that is).

Of course you can modify a soft tail to handle better but still, due to the monoshock and frame set up, it wont out handle a dyna.

Depends a lot on your riding style as well as what kind of ride you envisage yourself on. Both are great imho.

Cheers

Thanx for the info!!! Really useful~ :)

Sporties! Excellent cornering machines. heee. Ya, the main difference is the rear suspensions. All the internal gadgetry that one I dunno or don't understand. Yet.

i think sporties are good machines to start with... :)

where do you guys go to when you all look for 2nd hand harleys? dealership? or word of mouth from friends?

A 2-3 years old sporty should not be over 18k right?

New 883L is 17.2 machine price

Anyway, anyone has any suggestions as where and what I should do to convert my solo into a two-up. I've been going through ebay and there seems to be a couple of good buys. I dropped by sun burst and Mr Yee was saying I should get from online. Any brands I should look out for other than HD? Also in terms of accessories do I have to search online or would places like sumsoon and custom cycles have stuff I could look at? Would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Thanks alot

18k can get a new one, but sans accessories. 883L I think is going for 17k or so.

on stock, a 883 you should be able to hit around 150 to 170 kmh, 1200 should be able to bring you close to 200 kmh or over but prepare for a rough ride

Getting past 150km/h would be easy and still comfortable. Anything over 170km/h and you will start observing stability issues. (Stock machines that is).

But harley davidsons are not really about top speeds but torque. What you want out of your harley is huge torque rather than hi hp for top speed. Coz it takes a lot more $ and effort to squeeze out another 10hp than it does another 10 N.m on a harley davidson. Just mho.

Cheers.

Sportsters are very good machines that can go pretty much forever and are very well built if maintained well. They are like the hi end yamaha rxk :p

If however, getting a second hand, here are somethings to note:

1. Fork Clamps - May have cracks due to hard riding. so may need replacement.

2. Fork springs - The dampening may not be as good anymore due to severe hard braking. Check the Front fork travel that it is not too deep or 'loose'.

3. Brakes - Check that there are no cracks at the brake caliper. For older models (>3 years), there were instances where brake calipers didnt stand the pressure put on them. But that was rare.

4. Fuel pump - 2-3 year olds should be EFI. So do check that during your test ride, the acceleration is smooth and delivery is smooth too. Not choking feeling and stuttering.

5. Any other non OEM mods - this is always a concern for me personally. because sometimes there are so many mods being done on it, it is like 'rojak' and all parts/mods do not compliment each other well and the whole ride could be worst than stock but seller charges hi price because of all the hi end parts that were used. so do be careful of this.

6. Power commanders - Newer models owners will normally mod the PC to hi end PC3s or others. Do make sure that the EFI mapping and tuning was done at a good shop if not done at the dealership. that mod is simple but yet can really kill the ride.

Just mho. other wise, sporsters are awesome and you will love every minute of it.

If the dealership has it, better to get it there. At least you know you are getting something that has passed their inspection and tests and also, you do get some warranty.

cheers

hahaha... hi end rxk.. you are gonna make a lot of sporty owners very sad...

Oh, a question on the brakes.. which is always one of my greatest concern. I notice that most harleys (if not all) operates on single front brake disc... is there any ways to mod it to dual disc to improve braking capability? i dun think single disc is good enough to stop such a heavy bike.. i'm already having problem doing a good stop on my heavy bike with 2 disc now...

i think what christiine55 is trying to say is the bike dont really gives you problem, just the basic maintenance and the bike will keep going, just like rxk..i be happy if my sporty does that..:D

Yes, there are upgrade kits for twin discs up front.

The VRODs & Sportster Roadsters come stock with twin discs.

Don't be too sure. My old 883 only goes 140km/h. Anything more is damn stressful for the engine I feel. Maybe mine cha-chat. hahah. But the 120 range is damn easy to hit and comfortable to ride. If you're not careful you'll be doing that one Spore roads.

I ride a 1200. Have only pushed it up to 130kmh max coz I'm allergic to any higher speed. Anyway, with only 5 gears & a redline of 5500rpm, I'm not comfortable to push the bike to the limits.

But harley davidsons are not really about top speeds but torque. What you want out of your harley is huge torque rather than hi hp for top speed. Coz it takes a lot more $ and effort to squeeze out another 10hp than it does another 10 N.m on a harley davidson. Just mho.

Totally agree. I love the fact that I can overtake most vehicles (under normal traffic conditions in Spore) by just flicking my wrist at any gear. No need to downshift as long as the rpms are maintained at the optimum range.

I wanna upgrade my bike. I just got my bike and I find that really hard to brake such a heavy bike..

I've done a dual disc conversion. Itch for a 6-pot set so now have a pair of front HD Brembo 4-pot calipers for sale. just scroll down the list on this thread. It includes lightly used Made in Italy brembo pads. The black pair is reserved for a buyer. Drop me a PM on your bike model etc. and I can advise you on the upgrade.
