Hello Forum Friends,

For those who owns older model softtails and tourers with stock 130 tyres, just FYI on the Metzeller upgrades: (Of course there are some marketing language, but the specs are good ref.)

NOTE: The Stg 1 and Stg 2 lingo IMHO is marketing talk and pointless.

ME880 REAR TIRE UPGRADE RANGE

This sample range of REAR tires demonstrates why Metzeler is recognized as the best upgrade tire manufacture in terms of mileage, ride, handling, and looks of their V-Twins!

• The three tires shown are:

• ME880 130/90-16 - OE fitment size. This simple OE replacement will give you an overall upgrade in performance.

• ME880 140/90-16 - Stage 1 Upgrade - The easiest bolt-on Upgrade that does not require modifications to your bike, while giving you better looks and all the typical Metzeler benefits.

• ME880 150/80-16 - Stage 1 / Stage 2 Upgrade - The next step up from stage 1 requires an O.E. wide tire kit. Make sure to check basic fender and belt clearances depending on your actual motorcycle set up.

• The full line of ME880 REAR tires listed below gives you all the potential sizes available, so you can customize your bike how you want it to look.

ME880 BASIC REAR TIRE UPGRADE RANGE

Just sharing a report on Exhaust comparisons. Hope it helps in getting your ideal pipes.

Note:

1. Bike used is a stock TC88 engine.

2. Ave HP is from 2000 rpm - 5500 rpm.

3. Max HP is taken at 5500 rpm and IMHO, not a good point to use as you dont ride at that rpm. For good reference, use the ave HP.

4. Figures are as accurate as the report and dyno says.

Brand: Python 3

Ave HP: 48.8

Max HP: 65.7

Samson 2-1

Ave HP: 50

Max HP: 67.2

Hooker 2-2 Torque

Ave HP: 46.9

Max HP: 63.8

Hooker 2-2 HP

Ave HP: 49.4

Max HP: 66.0

Kerker 2-1

Ave HP: 49.3

Max HP: 66.7

Screamin Eagle Pro 2-1

Ave HP: 49.6

Max HP: 66.7

Super Trapp 20 Disk

Ave HP: 49.2

Max HP: 65.9

D&D FatCats 2-1

Ave HP: 49.9

Max HP: 67.4

IMHO:

This is a pure exhaust comparison and there isnt much difference in performance actually between each brand name and configuration.

Try to avoid short drag pipes as I personally had bad expereinces with it before. I actually experience losses in HP unless I am at the higher end of the rpm curve. Totally user unfriendly and wasted my money on that. Sigh...

Pythons are very popular in Singapore and perhaps, there could be good 2nd hand ones in the market that forum friends could get their hands on.

Screamin Eagle pro 2-1 looks and sounds good (not overly loud) but problem with it is the heat coming out of the pipes. It is way too hot and cooling period is execeptionally long.

D&Ds are great pipes but it is way too loud. WAY WAY too loud. Starting up is ok but anything above 2000 rpm... you are like honey to bees. White motorcycles will be following you from behind flagging you down.

I never used Vance and Hines or Rhineharts before but I figure their Ave HP specs wont be that far off. They are also very popular here in Singapore so 2nd hand ones should be available.

RB Racing LSRs are very good 2-1 racing pipes that are made to order. They not only sound good but for a stock configuration, it also performs very well.

Will post a mod vs HP vs Torque post soon.

Cheers

any notable significance on torque with the hypercharger?

Thanks!

With the hypercharger+mikuni, throttle response feels much better, cold starting is easier & I noticed that I’m running at slightly higher rpms than before. Bike feels more powerful but that’s only based on the butt dyno :p

Expecting my FC to drop, but I’m still monitoring that.

Generally, I’m pleased with it so far, but then it could be because I haven’t been riding for 2 months

I dropped by the dealership today to set up an appt for my first servicing. So I ran a few questions by them. Apparently screaming eagle pipes (mufflers) and filter would cost me about a grand. I asked about the remapping of the ECU as mentioned in the forum before and that is additional altogether, about a grand plus. Has anyone gone through this route before? Is it possible to get mufflers first, say phytons or something else online from J&P Cycles and upgrade the filter with the remap later or should all this be done at the same time. What I understand is that if the filter is changed and mapping left as it is, the bike would be running lean which could lead to engine damage... am I right on this point or have I misunderstood? Could any kind soul who has done a stage 1 mod offer any advice, or share their experiences?

J&P Cycles catalogue has quite a few mufflers which I'm considering, was wondering if I could just change mufflers initially and do the rest (filter and remapping) later? And if i get another brand (other than SS) can i still use the SS filter?

Any thoughts, and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks in advance.

These were the few that caught my eye. I guess i'm looking for sound, cosmetics and a bit of performance... not looking to race but increase in performance won't hurt right.

Anyone tried any of these brands?

Thanks again

@stevenbarter:

For exhaust performance comparisons, kindly take a look at my post above. They are pretty similar in terms of performance if placed on a stock TC88 bike. However, their performance changes a lot when you start putting it with other 'go fast' bits.

As for which brand to use, the brands you mentioned are all respectable brands and you can easily get them in Singapore without going through the hassle of ordering from the states (only if that is a hassle). You can order the pipes from:

SunHog - Look for Janet

Tony @ Custom Cycles

Ah Yee @ Sun Burst

Cosmetic and sound wise, it is very subjective and it is entirely up to you. But for performance / street wise, you may want to go for 2-1 instead of 2-2 so that you can have more mid range power where it becomes very usable for singapore roads.

If you are going to order from the states, might i suggest you try: RB Racing LSR pipes 2-1. Go to their website and take a look. You will fall in love. They not only perform but have the sound level that should please you too. J&P wont hold those pipes so you need to order from RB themselves. They dont hold stock and so will have to make to order. Waiting time for delivery to USA from USA is approx 4-5 weeks.

If you intend to sell your pipes as second hand later in Sg, you may want to stick with Pythons and or Vance and Hines. They are more popular here in Sg and dealers would more readily take them in as compared to others.

I have tried Samsons true duals before (not the one you have stated) and didnt like them. The performance and air flow wasnt very smooth on my old soft tail.

Now to reply your second post. IMHO...

1. Pipes

2. Air filter

(1 or 2 doesnt matter which comes first)

3. Ignition module/spark plugs/cables

4. Power Commander

5. re-mapp EFI.

The re-mapping should be done last. so that all your parts could be re-mapped altogehter at once and you dont need to go back and forth to remap and optimize your baby everytime you change a part. Before remapping, you may find that your bike could be running too rich but that is ok as long as you remap it later. This way, you save more money in the long run.

Again...dont forget to keep your OEM parts in pristine condition. if and when you sell your baby, the OEM parts help in market value.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Christine

hi steven,

you may like to try this on your bike.

http://www.fi2000r.com/page.php?section=28

i read in other overseas harley forums and it seem many have tried with great success since 2007. It works well with a stage 1 upgrade. You can either get the O2 eliminator set or use it with the O2 (closed loop). I chose the closed loop and I have ordered from realhog and it takes about 1 week to reach sin.

From forums, the new EFI bike are tuned to pretty lean, 47:1, and some website actually rumour that the new 08 has been tuned to 60:1 for greener environment issues. I will be putting this on once i get my bike,,, now on a vessel to singapore...yipeee...

For exhaust, i have choose to get a brand new second hand stock exhaust from ebay, about US $40 for a pair of muffles and the drilling about $60 from any of the mentioned harleys workshops. It will gives you a low bassy rumbles, not as loud and pitchy as after markets. Again how each exhaust sound and how you want your bike to sound is based on individual preferences.

I had Vance&Hines short staggereds, a Fuelpak to remap my EFI and SE aircleaner. The V&H pipes were way too loud for comfortable use, and I sold it off for SE SP mufflers. I'm quite satisfied with them since it's a much better combination of power and sound.

Christine, maxmadness and tingchiyen,

Thanks very much for the info, I really appreciate the advise

I'm more or less settles on the SS air cleaner, as for pipes, I don't think i'll make a very drastic change (although the RB Racing pipes are pretty damn nice, personally i prefer the look of dual pipes, and the Nitro Duals do look very tempting). I'm a bit hesitant on changing the entire exhaust system.

I guess my objective is:

1) Sound, i would like a deep sounding exhaust, something deeper and bassier (if there's such a word) than the stock pipes. Louder than stock but not too loud to the point of being inconsiderate. (SS / Vance and Hines / Pythons - good options?)

Therefore, I'm considering mufflers although the choice of which is to be determined? Any reviews on the SS mufflers?

And do mufflers have any effect on performance or is the effect just sound?

2) Performance

- i guess this is where the filter and remapping comes into play

RB Racing website, (hope its the right one): http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/

Maxmadness, i went to the website, so if the fi2000r is installed, does a remapping still need to be done?

Christine, you mentioned as part of the stage 1 upgrade:

- ignition module/plugs/cables - could you kindly elaborate on these and the benefits also if this portion is not added, are there any effects on the set up.

- power commander - i went to the website, but i'm kinda lost as to what is going on, how does the remapping come into play with the power commander installed?

- do the power commander and the fi2000r perform the same function?

I'm not looking to convert my sporster into a racing machine, but a good street performer.

Thank you'll so much for the info and input, as I think its pretty obvious by now, I'm a bit of an idiot with the mechanics of the setup. Is there any site there would be good info for me, somewhere I can learn the lingo and the technicalities.

Once again thanks and I'm learning alot.

ok, sorry for the rather long post previously, I should have done my research first.

I now understand that the fi2000r and the power commander perform the same function of adjusting the air-fuel ratio to enable the bike to perform better.

Qn1) Both are self adjustable as I understand, how do you ensure the optimal setting, given lets say that I have no technical aptitude whatsoever?

Qn 2) Does remapping of the ECU still need to be done after either is installed?
