Looking at the poor response, no. Probably next week, after jade gets her bike back from her maintenance.

My bike's throttle cable snapped on Sat, so I sent it to Kallang Cycle for repair. Told Mike to clean my air filter as well.

Then I decided to do valve clearance by Minerva.

Got it back yesterday and they told me that something is wrong with my carb, but since I told them to work on valve clearance, that's what they did.

On top of that, they said that my air filter was filthy, so they cleaned it! Hmm.... I WAS charged for cleaning of the air filter by Mike though? In addition, they changed my spark plugs as wrong ones were installed before - by Mike.

I'm a tad surprised/disappointed/jaded/cheated - can't really put my finger as to which is my real emotion. *sigh*....

My bike feels better, but I sent it to Minerva again today since they say that the carb needs work. We'll see how things go.

r minerva realli charging ridiculous prices for everything? or slightly upmarket prices onli?

Does Minerva charge ridiculous prices? Well it depends on how you see it.

Apparently there's a 15% discount on parts from Minerva (an incentive to use their workshop).

As far as I know, their labour is time specific in accordance with a scale. This means that a job that is say, tag at an hour will cost you an hour's labour, regardless whether the job took the mechanic 3 hours or half hour. I think that is fair because it does not then depend on the skill and experience of the mech. I like the way the job is broken down in the job sheet, by time labour cost and the parts cost.

Personally I prefer this method than the get-heart-attack-at-bill-without-breakdown method at some workshops. To me there's some accountability, not like guesswork and argaration.

Juz my 2 cents worth.

whao thks alot for yr time explaining, coolcat !

actualli this seems a more honest way of charging actualli..the 15% incentive sounds realli attractive too....i remember used to be kinda shocked sometimes wit 'labour costs' after the job was done on my mito(not minerva).haha...thks for e information...ok when's the nxt outing?!

I have bible class on Wed nights leh... :sorry:

Anyhoo, My bike is back in action, changed my front fork gaskets, cleaned the carb and changed several O rings, changed air filter. Total bill is almost $350.

The mech told me that I should use Caltex petrol instead? What do you guys use?

No worries if you can't make wed, I'm generally ok most nites. juz let me know when. Serviced your fork seals? did they service yr forks too?

I'm using V-Power. Frankly, didn't think that it would be an issue.

Cheers

Frankly speaking u can use 92 if ur bike dont ping(knock). If it doesnt ping, any higher in octane number is wasting $$ tru ur exhaust n the same volume of 92 n v-power have the same amount of energy when combusted.

Higher Octane gas is needed for higher compression engine. Higher Octane number is more stable n withstand pressure b4 ignite. In high com engine, 92 might ignite under pressure b4 the plug spark.

But of course u r paying more for v-power for the higher octane number n have more cleaning agent that claim to be more efficient in removing carbon at various parts.

i tried 92 but it kinda ping but now with a jet kit i gonna try 92 again.

hmm use caltex...nv ask him Y? Personally i pump any brand...

I tried 92 before, and the bike didn't run very well. Switched back to 95 immediately.

Maybe due to the jetting, or high temperatures, but running a higher octane petrol is a cheap insurance against potentially expen$ive repairs.

Think holes in pistons whenever you pump ron95 :)

in US the standard octane petrol is like 89...so i dun think 92 should be an issue?

Nono the standard in US is different. i forgot but their 89 is something like our 95.

http://autorepair.about.com/od/generalinfo/a/aa060504a.htm good read !

i'm quite sure the octance level is the same? i mean...if it's written 92 octance in US...i'm sure sg's 92 is their 92 as well(their premium over there !)...doesnt make sense to use the same unit of rating but having diff levels? (*ps:their regular is actualli 87!)

aniway like my dad always say.."city driving u need premium for what?" but then again , ironically,i still pump v-power...haha

Its not the same. Alot of measuring units r different betw UK n US. They just cant stand being the same. I presume we r using 92-98 RON( Researched Octane Number), but US is 87-92 octane.MON( Motor Octane Number)? PON( Pump Octane Number)?. RON n PON n MON number are near but the formula they use to calculate is different. N all this numbers r just used to measure the ability to resist knocking.

Wah u all so rich ah.

Theres really not necessary to use 98 n i have yet to hear any negative feedback on using 95 RON n even the owners manual says use 95...so y not?

Posted

Have tried 98 recently, but thought that it ain't any diff from 95. Think I'll revert to 95 again and see how.

I suppose it depends on the Octane, nothing to do with brand of petrol?

The best fuels like V-power, Caltax Platinium etc claims (and actually do have) engine cleaning agents added to the fuels. It cleans the fuel injectors, prevents rust in fuel tank and all that.

So its good to pump V-power once a month to "clean" the engine, but not nessesary to pump everyday unless you're rich. oh yar, i read in magazines that these "performance" fuels were tested over "normal" fuels and do increase power by alittle bit.
