I am fresh local poly grad (Just completed NS) in IT engineering.

Currently working as an sales executive in construction line(2 mths), drawing an average local poly grad pay with no commission. Its in those Chinese Pte Ltd companies where not much of a career advancement.

I am actually planning on working for a good 2 years just for some experience and filling up my blank resume as its hard to find job for fresh poly grads. Planning to take up a private PT degree in business and go towards the marketing path.

But currently i have an job offer as an engineer for high pressure pumps.

They are offering 300-400 more than what im taking now and willing to take up fresh grad with no experience. Its for a big MNC in gas/marine industry where there are a lot of travel opportunities which is good for some one inexperience like me i guess. I will be taking up PT mech Degree if im were to continue in this line as i do not have relevant studies in this line too. Just that the downside is i will not be PEB regconise as i wont be able to enter local uni.

I know the main thing is what i really like and into, but i do not have any preferences. Willing to go into any line as long as it will benefit in the long run. But reading much in forums, engineers are not doing so well in singapores are most jobs are taken up by foreigners.

Maybe some Lao jiaos can share some views and which route should i take which benefits me in the long run.

Thanks in Advance!

This is subjective. If I may contribute:

1) Yes, a lot of the engineering posts are taken up by non-singaporeans.

However, there still are posts for locals, fresh grads (as yourself)

Many would say you'd take a paycut, but in your case, 1st job out ot ORD, won't feel any "cut".

So, just take the job, la.

2) I reckon the MNC job would be better, since;

i) you may have better job prospects

ii) you may have better pay propects as time passes by

ii) you may have chance at a non-local posting. depends on availability, job-description and/or luck.

but then again its your choice. good luck.

When I first started out in the employment line 25 years ago, I nearly entered poly to do engineering. then i backout because at that time already heard so many student taking so many different engineering courses.i thought difficult to find jobs.

since you have passed your diploma, my advice save up your money. do a degree dont get caught in the loophole.keep sending resume. if possible go to big company or civil service. when i was in NEA, met many engineers friends who had little experience but go to NEA then get good jobs but not related to their studies.

Thank you all for such good comments.

Just wondering, generally can a business career path or engineering path earn more for an average guy with average studies like me.

Don't waste time, get class 4, drive sand truck, earn big bucks. Society will tell you get diploma, work here, get degree, get more pay etc.

Personally, I cannot say which is the better choice but all I can say is that to get the job that you think u will not dread stepping into every single day, a company that encourage its employee to go for further education and training to improve themselves. Try to maintain a mindset that for every or any job that you take, you are on a learning journey, because there is no way you can know everything the moment you get hired into a certain company and for everything you learn, it will be a good additional for your resume if you wish to pursue different careers in the future. The most important thing you need to have when you step into the job which you have decided to take is to always remain humble, do not try to go in with the "So? Whats the big deal" attitude, establish a good relationship with as much people around you as possible, you never know who will be your benefactor (not telling you to suck up to people), you are facing other employees who has years of experience way ahead of you, you will be facing people who will always be better than you or people who just cannot seem to catch up, it does not matter how much future prospect you might have, if you were to be arrogant, there is no way you can advance too much.

Last but not least, always remember, never look down on people, irregardless of their capabilities or job scope (do not be like the couple who looked on the bus driver just because of his job), especially in the future, if you were to become a director, CEO or even a founder/entrepreneur of any company, always remember your the time when you just started to step out into the real world and that there are tons of people out there who will be like you and needs help.

Why do I say this, because I am working in a job with hierarchy issues, the lower levels all run like mad dogs while the management levels just sit on their desk daily and shoot emails around.

My posts are based on peaceful discussion, honest questions happy jokes. If for any personal reason u find my post not suiting your ego, scrolling and clicking is always faster than typing. Not hearing my retorts to your rude remarks only means I have confirmed that your upbringing is that of barbarians.
