Hi Everyone,

I just sent my Phantom TA200 to GA Motors at Blk 32 Sin Ming Drive for an overhaul. Initially he quoted $250 but somehow it came up to $800. According to the mechanic, he needed to see what needs to be changed which was inside the engine.

The stuff that he changed was:

2 timing rods

1 tensioner belt

1 piston

1 spark plug (my plug ok wad?!)

1 set of gaskets

2 things they call "peckers"

1 engine oil change

Did I get chopped really badly? It's my one month's pay sia...sigh

Last time i go to Defu Lane GNG overhaul my SP only cost me $500 flat. No hidden charges. Done by Ah Chuan (skinny). He assured me if got any problems can go look for him. Since then my bike ok liao no problem. The bike was eventually sold and im riding super4 bought from them.

everything is costly to learn...but the knowledge we get is priceless.

overhaulling a normal class 2b bike will take ard 3 days the fastest...

from the list of ur things changed,i reckon its juz a repair...not overhaul..

i know how u feel coz i got chopped b4...now im changing most things myself, buying the parts from authorised dealer...

cheers

yes the mechanic is ah heng.....the boss is the guy that likes to go fishing

the funny thing is if replacing these parts do not count as an overhaul, that what is the crucial thing that they have to do that counts?

lucky i dun have a weak heart....

an overhaul is actually stripping the whole engine... as in taking the blocks out until u reach the cam bearings inside... if the mech see no need to change anything, he would fix everything back and u pay for oil seals, gaskets and labour.

if there are things to change (usually bearings)piston ring also they would usually change as it's relatively cheap, then u pay extra for what is changed..

but most agents would understand overhaul to be 'replace everything in the engine' costs betwn $700 and $7000 depending on what bike ur riding..

It's your damn bike, wash it yourself! You rinse your own mouth after you eat, don't you?

like what i said... it costs $400 because the mech didn't change everything in the engine. his might cost $800 because the mech actually did everything that consists of an overhaul to an 'agent' includes sending the block for reboring and all that (although that didn't seem to be the case).

an agent's overhaul for bikes of the same model would cost the same. if u go to normal mechs, they would not change things that they assume is not spoilt or gonna spoil anytime soon. so it depends on what u change.. change more, pay more lor..

ask them to break down the price on each part.. and probably get some discount since u do some many things.. then next time u come again.. else..

did they call u to tell wat to change first b4 changin for u anot??

some bikeshop insist changing.. then u asked them show u wat's wrong.. change anot is up to ya..

some bike shop give u good price but lousy parts.. if ur parts r good one, sure it worth to pay more.. rite??

remember wat are those parts u changed then next time u no need to change again..

update: there seems to be no end to trouble. my dad pointed out that petrol seemed to be leaking from my bike. True enough, the whole tank was empty. I went back and they said something abt rust in the petrol tank clogging the system...

I did take the opportunity to request for a reciept for the works done (attached). What do you all think? Is the price a little too steep, or I really kanna carrot-ed like god knows what?

I am considering further action if the disparity is really too great. Thanks everyone for your comments so far....it sure has been a bad learning experience.
