Hi,

I wanted to buy a 2nd hand bike and is looking at getting it from a shop (instalment). I know that shop settle all the documents like transfering and buying of insurance for us. I have some questions:

1. Any extra admin fees for all that? And how much?

2. Which company of insurance will they take? Can we choose ourselves?

3. I know that it takes 2-3 days to settle before I can take the bike home, is it possible if i can drop by LTA myself etc and get the bike straight?

1)Depends entirely on the shop. LTA's transfer fee is only $11, not including road tax payable.

2)Which insurance company, depends on the shop. Can choose or not, if instalment, generally cannot choose. if full cash, it is your right to choose.

3)No. Admin must be done by shop. Whats the hurry?

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

Why not get it from private seller?

You can ride the bike on the spot after transfer at LTA.

To ride on the road, You need skills,Stamina, or even luck.

But to be a good rider, you have to change with your environment, and adjust yourself to its rhythm.

sure you can laugh about it now, but wait till you encounter a shop which throws up a smoke grenade with a low price tag but all sorts of admin fees come in. so go ahead and laugh....

on top of LTA admin fee of $11, you are also required to pay for the balance of the bike's road tax on the spot.

Think lump sum figure for settling everything. Should be $300 onwards.

If $0 d/p then everything like insurance, road tax and admin fee get interest. Not sure if they allow now. Usually they will tell u at least few hundred upfront.

Easiest way to find how much u over pay is to add the installment up.

Anyway years back when still buying bike from shop everything in house. Everything sure over charge.

If u r comfortable with the installment then go ahead. As long as u Dont sign on the dotted line can always walk away

Btw most bike shop settle very fast cos they can do it online. Morning buy afternoon can collect.

Happy hunting. Just don't listen to the BS they promised

Honestly, depends on what you're gonna use that bike for. Pay installment have interest, end up you're paying more. I'd pay full cash if its purpose is just transport, if its for work, hopefully the bike can pay itself off.

If cannot pay full cash, at least high downpayment, at least 50%. .

I'm not sure what kind of bikes you are getting.

but if you don't even have a few K on hand, better don't get a bike first.

shops are selling normal 2B bikes at least 1K- 2K more than private seller.

you are only looking at the cost... must look into the age of bike.. service warranty and etc.

main difference btw bike shop and direct seller

1. pricing, bike shop usually higher

2. servicing, some bike shop give service warranty

3. maintainance, bike shop donno how the previous owner rides the bike and how often maintain the bike

4. outlook, bike shop will clean it nicely to sell for a higher price

5. bike shop give a one stop shop, instalment, transfer fee and etc. sometimes need your IC for a day or 2, worst - 1 week.

6. direct seller will have to go LTA together with you to do transfer and hand over the key and you hand over the cash. (full)

7. direct seller will tell you which bike shop give good service and maintain this bike well. (depends on the type of seller too)

8. get to know more biker friend and can joint them for trips and etc.

hope this helps.

yes, some bike shop provide warranty.

if yes, normally 1 to 3 months. of cause, every service comes with a price.

if you have class 2 or 2A, go for a 250cc or 300cc bike.

normally cheaper, an off cause, resell value is lower.

going JB would have a piece of mind.. ha ha
