From my observation from the last HOV ride, the assistant coaches seem to be particularly sensitive to such hazards. Blame in on HOV.

With regards to the exit from clementi ave 6 entering PIE going towards Jurong or Tuas. i usually stays in lower gears, dun keep checking for vehicle filtering into lane.. and blind spot.. dun forget abt the vehicle infront of u.. its either u exit and lane change asap or do it almost to the end.. in the mid section of the interchange path, there will b lots of confusion among drivers. Danger zone.. if a big vehicle(lorry) is on by ur side.. u can use it to shield u and overtakes when its clear..

Cheers and ride safe

Street Smart Tip of the Day #157

We focus a little closer on the rider... On his back.

Take note of the Pack On His Back...

That little bag can determind if he ever walk again if he have a crash

and lands on his spine.

What he puts in the pack will all decide the amount of protection he gets.

And a full strap pack with chest & waist fasteners will keep the pack with

him as he flips thru the air.

It's the 1st impact we need to cushion.

Sort of what we say "Break the Fall"

And it's is no big secert that a large amount of spinal injury

patients in our hospitals are

from moto cycle accidents.

Moto Gp Riders wear Back protector for a good reason.

As for me... I put in a Back Protector in My Back Pack.

Beside the Extra Padding that comes with my pack.

Raincoat, laptops, clothings ... bks will all add to the cushion.

And had recently brought one from Harbour Front MegaStore...

A Deuter Pack with a Back Protector... $76

It's meant for cyclist... but it gonna help me in the same way.

There is no guarantee that above will work 100%

But we in the area of damage control.

Hi Tridagger:

Both Riding Jacket comes with rain protector

as a inner liner. (more to keep warm or against light rain)

The Taiwaness Jacket at Chiong Aik has a proper raincoat

in zip pocket at the back of the jacket.

U should get a size that fits u...

Reason:

The Armour which is the albow & shoulder guards

must be in place when u fall. So if it is too loose...

They may not be there to do the job.

There is also a Back protector... thin sheet of rubber.

Not the best but will help.

Backpack:

As for backpack... It is good to have one.

It helps to absorb the impact on the spine if u land

on your back.

I try to wear one all the time!

Get one that fasten on top & waist>

with a thick backing!

I bought one at Mega Mart... Harbour Front.

$78 and it has a hard backing for riding

(it meant more for bicycles... but it will help)

Czh: Thks for your comments...

as for the situation at traffic lites...

Filtering to the front is a privelege of moto bikes.

Racing with an Evo is not a good option.

U may lose your bike if convicted in court...

Beside the dangers that comes with it.

If behind a few cars and the lights goes green...

I would just find a gap and follow one of the cars.

:thumb:

Raining days:

I have seen riders bare footed.

Dry shoes... no foot.

I rest my case... ha ha..

Hi Spectrum!

Thanks for your advice - I got my riding jacket already! Changed new tyres also, just to be safe

Now thinking of getting raincoat, cos keep raining... but hor, got any difference between the normal raincoat selling $6.50 in grocery stores and those OGK raincoat selling $65 at bikeshops? Same right???

Anyone care to comment?

Would like to encourage those who don't have the habit of checking your tire pressure to do so. I changed my tyres to Bridgestone Battarax tyres some 5 months back at ah boy's shop, and only check the pressure today after hearing so much from the different riders on the need to check your bike.

Correct me if I'm wrong, NSR is front 200kpa or 29PSI and rear is 220kpa or 32PSI. There was a conversion table at the Shell station i went to today between PSI and KPA so i checked to re-confirm. Turned out my tyres were pumped to rear 43PSI and front 40 PSI, a whopping 30% more pressure than reccomended, and I've been riding around with over-inflated tyres for close to half a year.

Riding on under-inflated tyres is dangerous, cause you are prone to skidding, especially when cornering. But what about over-inflated tyres? I mean Battarax is not air-tube type and not possible for a blowout right? Or have i been riding on a fine line the past 5 months, especially when the weather gets hot in the afternoon and the tyre pressure increases? :giddy:

And please dun ask the mech at ah boy's shop to check hor. Cause yesterday i went there get the Stebel Magnum 2 Horn ask him check, he use hand and press press say can, enough air. Of course enough lah! Pump until so much by them where got not enough :bouncefire:

Guys I just changed my tyres and the fella pumped for me 220 front and back. Mine is tube tyre cos using spoked rims. Is it the same pressure as using tubeless tyres? Or less?

Anybody know?

I never expected such a simple backpack can cause so much trouble. I used to carry a backpack like him too but I decided to reduce my things to a minimum or put them into my saddlebags or sidebox for storage. So right now I have no protection on my back unless I wear my riding jacket..............

I used to think that way too when i started wearing gloves. Wanted to give up wearing them too because like cannot feel throttle, cannot signal properly, cannot feel the braking etc. Really wanted to chuck my newly bought gloves aside.

But i stuck to it because i feel that wearing gloves serves one important purpose and that is to protect the hand in case of a fall. So i stuck to wearing my newly bought gloves and when it became seasoned, it felt like a second skin. If for any reason when i ride without them, i would feel "naked". :cheeky:

So carry on wearing them, coz when it is seasoned, it would feel just like your 2nd skin.

Wise choice. Glad you decided to keep wearing them.

Tridagger: No prob. This forum was meant to promote safer riding and share useful info for bikers

Just wondering, how do you all usually react after a close shave due to other road user's error. Specifically lane changing without checking blindspot, and you're not even filtering. I've been sticking my middle finger of late. Pretty uncivillised, i know.

Not that i stay in other people's blindspot, but in heavy traffic you sometimes end up in blindspot, even in left most lane also can get close call. If you slow down too much to get outta blindspot of car on the right, behind kenna tailgater, you go faster to get out of blindspot, you tailgate the front, not a good idea. So your only recourse is to ride in a predictable manner, maintain your cocoon of space, be alert, but stay in blindspot. Then the *&^% $# on your right lane changes and signal at the same time. If you alert, you e-brake and hone at the same time, and you get to stick your middle finger, you sway, maybe no more finger to stick at at anyone. Riding in heavy traffic in S'pore not easy man :giddy: Been having close calls of late, maybe due to wet weather plus bad peak hour traffic, more frustrated motorists on the road. Sometimes, practice so much HOV, road courtesy and defensive riding, reduce your risk to minimum, but once in a while meet some &^%$#@ on the road, the type you strive to keep yourself away from to stay alive, really can't help but give it them, then later think back :sian: should have had more self control. Any comments?

Yesterday was the first time I rode with my riding jacket, didn't expect it to be so cool - even more cooling than my windbreaker! Stopping at the lights got things heated up a little, but once I moved off it totally changed for the better. Looks like I'll be riding with the jacket on for the rest of my riding career :cheer:

When I went for my Class 2B, NEVER thought of getting any riding gear. Not for my Class 2A even. But looks like I'll be going for Class 2 next year with my own gloves! hahaa... :cheeky:

We really have to take our safety into our own hands, especially after reading about the accident yesterday which 2 ladies passed away.

You guys are great. But from what I can see, most riders who get their riding gear are those who ride for the passion. Those who ride bikes as a form of transport most of the time couldn't be bothered about their gears... I should start preaching to my uncle about it...

Posted

Zhehong, I think the finger is the most common given by bikers - even more often than the 'thank you wave'! haha...

I do encounter these situations occasionally, I'd usually just 'toot' my horn once or twice to let the drivers know I'm there and hope that they signal earlier so they won't endanger the next rider.

But my heart of course  , VERY  !! But I won't show them the 'sign' cos I wouldn't wanna risk losing control of my bike should another vehicle do the same! haha..

I really look up to those who can take it easy and 'forgive and forget', cos in my mind, really very hard to 'take it easy' with someone whom have just put my life on the line ya know.

Posted

I can understand the notion of flipping the finger when the other party does something that endanger our lives. Because i too see "RED" whenever someone does something stupid or reckless that may cause me to lose my life or get injured. But nowadays i would FIRST thank my lucky stars, be glad i reacted in time or saw the "act" coming, BEFORE anger starts to come into the picture.

I usually refrain from flipping the finger, because the guy can sue back by saying we insult/provoke them with a lewd sign.

So if there is a chance i can give some kind of signal, i would give the palm facing to the sky as if saying what the $&$^&% does he think he was doing. ("cho simi lan" kind of signal) But regardless of whether i get an apology or not, i will just chuck the incident one side and carry on my ride.

Tailgaters i usually give way to them, then see them tailgate the front car in front and make no progress forward whatsoever. It is actually quite comedic sometimes because i just picture a dumbass behind the wheel who loves kissing other people's asses. :cheeky:

actually once gotten used to the heat its quite ok..

was wearing A* mesh jackets for a few months and after a few close calls , decided to change my mesh jacket to a riding leather jacket , was very surprised that actually the leather jacket isnt any much hotter than mesh, even cooler than my A* tsunt jacket..

mesh jackets are a good start but if u seriously think abt the abrasion resistance of mesh if u were slidding on the road :giddy:

i am personally getting a bit paranoid lately , after seeing a few accidents etc .. :sorry:

Great Sharing Gents... It is the attitude that comes with wearing all the protection that cuts down the % in the risk we are expose to on the rd.

:thumb:

A rain suit that don't fits & give protection from the wet is important.

And a thin piece of plastic can do a lot in comfort & safety.

Mesh Jacket vs Leather:

Leather gives the best protection(cost more).

But I find it rather warm for city riding.

Mesh gives less protection but it works...

in quite of a few incidents I know of...

Jacket tear with skid but it had taken the impact/slide

and the wearer is protected.

And to get most out of leather... a full race padding will

be the good... those u see them wearing in Moto Mag.

A Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to All!
