When the tyre slides... how do you react?

Raptor

Recommended Posts

I used to cut the throttle out of reflex action when the rear wheel slid when powering out of the corners... which is actually a very dangerous thing to do due to possibility of highsiding the bike.

Now I am slowly learning to overcome the fear and hold on to the throttle, turn the handlebar into the slide and let the rear wheel gain traction to bring the bike back up again, thanks to the crazy Americans teaching me at the go kart track.

What caused you to slide in the corners?? Has that happened to you on the track before and how did you learn to overcome the fear and how did you deal with it?

i wish i know but cant answer this question of urs.... i neber exp rear wheel slidin b4 or maybe due to the lousy susp set up...the rear wheel might be sliding n i cant feel it....:giddy:

When the rear suspension is set too soft... spring preload... the chances of a rear wheel slide is high. The rear wheel gets a lot of loading during sudden accelerations and if the spring is set too soft.. it aborbs the load instead of transferring it to the rear tyre to grip the road.

This is what I have found out on the go kart tracks with the DRZ, dunno if it is applicable to the sportbikes.

Disclaimer: Am no suspension set up expert but this is what I have found out from meddling around with the suspension set up of the DRZ.

I would think that your suspension is set up correctly for your weight which is why you don't encounter slides.

Sudden twist of the throttle(meaning too much twist of the throttle) due to the traction surface of the tyre not being able to match the output power coming from ur rear wheel thus resulting it to slide.

First time as a natural thing, will shut the throttle resulting it to so call wobble and the feeling of throwing you out of ur sit. Seek advice from website talking abt this and realised that the only way to counter this is to keep ur cool, maintain ur throttle or open slightly and very slowly during sliding and counter-steer the bike in the opposite direction of sliding and guide the bike back. Gradually the tyre will gain traction and you are in control again.

That's how you see motards sliding in and out w/o falling coz they counter steer. You are actually doing it in ur daily riding just that some dun realise it.

Just my 2 cents of understanding it and apologies if i can't describe it as well as how i understand going abt to do it.

Cheers. :cheeky:

hold or open abit of throttle if possible n couter steer out of it...small slides maybe still can hold lah but for me I guess if a terrible sliding happens I might juz freak out

Season 1

hmm.. okay... i encounter this b4 the last time when i was in a corner.. doing pretty fast and low. i just keep throttling... till the extend tat the back wheel start to wobble, it was my first time, so i just ignore. the next thing i knew, i got a high slide, totally thrown up to the sky.

What i did was.. keep throttling, counter steer abit. and a high slide. btw i riding a sport.

Season 2.

after my fall a few weeks later... i try again.. i might not be going very fast... but if i encounter the wobbling, i try closing the throttle abit... as in not pumping on the throttle anymore, the wobble ends and i got back my grip.

Finale

What i think could be the reason was the tire lose its grip. Therefore pumping or increasing will cause the tire to wobble even harder. So by releasing the throttle slightly, letting the tire get back its grip before pumping might prevent any worst case scenario.

I am not sure whether my technique is correct.

or maybe i didn't try to counter steer hard enough.

This is a great topic ... hope more corner enthuse, can share pointer tips.

Tyres don't usually just give way and slide, most of the time, they send feed back to the rider through suspension movement and your pivot point (point on the bike which you are anchoring to).

When you get really comfortable and relax on the bike with the suspension working well, you should be able to "feel the tyres" or "feel the traction" through the part of your body holding onto the bike.

Personally encountered rear end slides at PG T1 and T5 and front slide at T9.

For rear slide, probably the best thing to do is to maintain throttle and ride it out. Been relaxed and not panicking is good enough.

For front slide, I was lucky to have my knee as a pivot while my front tyre regain traction.

Counter-Steering should come later after mastering the throttle control to ride out a slide.

Just my 2 cents worth as a self-taught trackie

Seems like having a knee down in the corners is much safer.

I have recovered from quite a few wheel slides... some at quite high speeds especially on the DRZ at Sepang Turn 6 using the knee to prop the bike back up again. All I know is... if I did not do that, I would have lost the front end and will be sliding down the track with the bike.

Try taking the motard bike out for some dirt ridding, you'll find slidding the rear wheel much more easier as compared to being on tarmac. Or get a dirt bike helps too.. i think after awhile, you'll get use to the rear sliding and it'll built up your confidence on sliding the rear. Check out the speedway racers.. those guys simply redefine sliding

Hhhhmmm...

Usually I just whack open the throttle and get the rear end kicked out to the side and hear the engine bounce of the rev limiter, if I feel like it, I stick out my left hand and give someone the finger... Just hold on to "X" while steering into the slide and press "Y" while pulling on the side buttons. (Ruben Xaus taught me how)

Thats what I do all the time on my Playstation anyhow... dont know why you guys making such a big fuss, especially that sportbike traitor Raptor...

i think when tyres slide, its not just throttle control....but using ur feet to steer the bike as well.

most of us say counter steer......but i dont think its the arm movement, but controlling the steer using the lower half of the body to get the bike upright....

again i think this should be the way....

hmmz.. just saw this clip off you-tube... mind commenting on it ?

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HbzyEpafwYw&mode=related&search=

Wow, that looked damn sudden. Even in slow motion, cant really tell when it starts to spin up and step out.

Doubt very much that it was because of lean, he was not banked over that far...

Since they even slowed down the sound with the clip, you also cannot tell if he was cranking open the throttle.

My best guess was he was in the gas, too much too early.

When my rear slides out, I normally ride it out, or at most shift my weight slightly more against the direction of the slide. My theory for the latter reaction is that if I lean more, bike doesn't have to lean so much...Don't know too much about this so I'm not sure if I've been doing the right thing or have just been plain lucky everytime my rear moonwalks.

When my front slides, instinctive reaction is to ease off the gas. But I think it will put more weight on the front which is already struggling to regain traction so this reaction I think is more on luck than doing the right thing :D
