You do realise that you are creating a group that can be targetted for brainwashing, bullied or downright identified for bluffing and cheated on?

I like to think of people as separate entities, all with their own lives and capable of independent thought thought.

I suppose any group could be targeted for the reasons you mentioned above. It seems to be working out thus far though - the diversity that we enjoy usually allow for a delicate balance of points and opinions. Not everybody gets along, which is good and shows that we're not (at least, not yet) susceptible to groupthink or any such phenomenon.

All in all I would say that the group is more than one can expect to have. We have impromtu 'hey who's out, wanna have supper?' gatherings to the lazy Sunday bike washing sessions. Clearly, we're not trying to take over the world here.

Truth is, I don't quite get your point. Are you under the impression that we are all new riders, as in, first time/first bike bikers? Because we've got people from L to P to 2b/2a/2. People who have been riding for a long time, and people who are new, in that sense.

You are, of course, welcome to join us anytime :)

Or better yet. Try registering for the 3NCR.

Well, I always feel like people who cannot follow rides with seasoned bikers enough, but need to er hem...'lead' their own groups, usually has a want to be the boss kinda mentality, and when **** happens.....these 'bozzes' are somehow more then ready to cut off their 'followers' on the pretext of they 'lead' for free.

I wouldn't say that we're a group. We can't exactly be identified as one. We're basically people in a whatsapp chat that sometimes meet one another, or form mini-groups within the chat for short trips or meet up sessions. There is no collective mindset or a group identify that we specifically follow.

As mentioned, I like to think that people are capable of independent thought, and can decide for themselves.

There is no leader figure in this 'group'. Different people have different skill points and we take pointers from one another from time to time. Different people organize different trips or outings and at different times. That said, I wouldn't mind joining you or your groups but I'm kinda shy. Which is another reason why I started this group, built on the idea that its much easier to come together if the people in a 'group' have not already formed little cliques within the group, making it weird for new people to blend in.

But I should hope to join you one day, if you let a weirdo like me. How should I go about doing that?

Hi, if I'm not wrong you'll need 50 posts to be able to post a new thread. I think.

I don't get it though. Why the animosity, even if only a hint?

I've always been a lone rider. My riding friends are few and they were all cl2 tourers when I was taking 2b, so we couldn't actually click. So, after riding for about 2-3 years and the occasional once in a few months meet ups with my riding friends, I figured I could do with some riding friends. Riding with people instead of hitting the roads alone when I feel the itch (especially after getting a new bike, you know?) could be a nice change.

So here's what I did. I looked through the forums. I saw that a couple of guys were somewhat in the same place that I was. Asking if anyone wanted to meet/ride in certain threads, with nobody replying. I created this thread, and then texted these two guys, if they wanted to form a group so we could get get-together sessions for riding or whatever.

Met them shortly, and it hit off from there. More and more people came in, we meet once in a while. We talk cock during work hours. We've built something more than a 'riding group'. More than anything, I feel that we've built genuine friendships.

We don't discriminate license or bike class. I always say, we've got L to CL2, kup to ducati, it doesnt really matter. We go as fast as the slowest rider (which is usually me......haaaaaa).

I'm not doing sales or anything. I don't preach anything to anyone (neither does anyone else in the group). It's really not that complicated, and any of you guys are welcome to join us or even come in for a peek and get to know some of the people inside.

Another reason why I set up this group instead of going out and finding groups to join is that, as mentioned, I am generally a shy person and I understand that sometimes people are apprehensive about joining groups because the people inside already know each other and the new members are usually afraid of feeling left out. You know, the 'older' members having their own inside circles and whatnot.

We've been around for more than a month, but not everyone has met everyone and our gatherings are usually small from 2-5 people usually. Simple stuff. Meet for coffee. Short ride long ride. Jb. Anything you can think of, and if you have a lot of things you can think of, join us, and tell us.

Cellardoor,

When you think of it as animosity, goes to tell me, that I was fairly on target.

So I hereby still wish you luck on your recruitment of riders. Especially the newbies. And hope you do actually help to steer the newbies to ride safe, ride fun and ride with the care, that they arent the only road users.

Not everyone will ride with you. Be it because of your personality, your style, your destinations, your bike, your diet choices or your speed. Some may eventually ride with you or break off into their more comfortable groups without you.

Learn that it will happen. Dont take it to heart. And Good Luck.

Also to the newbies, do take note that you have choices. From more established societies and groups of riding kakis to these new self formed groups that may group together and break apart anytime. The one and only thing to remember. Your Life, Your family, Your Career, Your Studies and those people's lives around you, be it when you are riding or not. Does not revolve around your EGO.

I have no reason to meet you up Cellardoor. Just to discuss with you, what you do not like about my comments on your advertisements for friends and forming your riding group. I am further not riding at the moment, I wouldnt know how your group is riding and whether they are a nuisance on the roads. Nothing in common with you except being online on this page. If you have issues about my comments, you are also welcome to contact me thru the various older riders you knew, who, if you borthered to have researched before, shouldnt be that hard to even find me on facebook.

Although, 3 NCR, I may be going, not because of the prestige of Riding, but because there are enough old friends attending the event and I will like to at least be there.

Hopefully, we can see you and your group there, and you can always buy me a beer.

Here's to further share a long ago story.

I was meeting some friends at Kallang KFC. Not all of them are Riders, and they accomodated me to meet there because of my riding. It was a mere 3 minutes er hem....walk from my home during that time.

I rode there, met with them and spotted a new group. Mostly those days. CBRs smallest cc. One guy was obvious leader and making comments, advises and talking to the group of newbies bikers. He was obviously an unofficial leader, maybe because of his age. Or maybe he is 'chao lao' look.

Anyway, as I left, put on my full face helmet, started my little kup kia and about to ride off.

The same ole 'leader' which I totally do not know of, from his perch above the stairs of Kallang KFC, shouted across at me, on my little kup kia. And using his chin to point at me and my bike and shouted/asked: "Where is your P plate?"

I pulled down the mouth covering piece of my FF, and shouted back: "Why do I need a P plate?" And rode off.

~~~~~
I eventually found out from other riders, he was the unofficial leader, because he called for the newbies to join him, on SBF itself.
And subsequently other stories surfaced in time.
From how some such 'elders' sian the female newbies bikers, to borrowing money and even for the COI, Garantors of bikes, owners of bikes but disappeared with the bikes and payments while the newbies have to face the penalties and difficulties of trusting such 'leaders' or even when they organised rides and accident happened.......and such leaders disappears or cannot handle the critisim of even minor mismanagements.
I don't think it's ever fair to judge a person, or this group for that matter, based on your anecdotal experiences.
As for the whole idea of the group, I think it's been stated very clearly by cellardoor. Let's not make an everest out of bukit timah hill.
Fair enough.
Just also a fair warning to the newbies.
How and where you join any group. Its at your own risk and judgment.
Here is also my favourite story.
This nerdy tuition teacher guy, joined a group.
And he has not acquired his licence.
On the group's member's advise. He bought a bike and laid it down. A group member suggest for the bike be taken to his place, for maintenance.
The Newbie, not knowing that when he lay down a bike, it should and legitimately be parked at his HDB home's carpark, with season parking. Agrees for the bike to be towed to this friend's place.
He subsequently receives several summons and penalties. With pictures to boot. And still the so called group and the same member who was riding that bike without insurance, and without approval, threatened this newbie and this newbie was even conned to lie to the Investigators during the first investigations.
The bike was even 'loaned/rented' out to other people thus there was so many penalties.
Until the newbie totally got weird out and came back to this forum to ask.....did it occured to him that he was in over his head.
Anyway, it became too late. Both of them are charged and the newbie is barred from acquiring the licence.
So just sharing....
If you want to chat with me about your ego. Feel free to contact me.
Interesting stories but I think it would serve its purpose better in a separate thread, maybe a 2b newbie guide? Being a new 2b myself I can't ever imagine myself being so easily conned or manipulated like these other guys but you never know the people out there.
Interesting, but sort of brings a negative feel to a positive thread. Sorry for going offtopic myself, lol.
Probably. So do scroll thru the threads thru this whole forum.
There are lots of threads here, not just the newest ones asking to form groups and getting offended when Oldbies speaks.
I don't know. It's just me. I have an aversion to being misunderstood. Always have, and always will have.
I still think you're under the wrong impression and as much as I shouldn't bother, I really want to set things straight. I'd extend you an invite to join the chatgroup, just to see what really goes on, but we both know you're likely to not join.
You have this notion in your mind that we follow some sort of hierarchical structure. We're the sort of rowdy group that, apparently, I command to do my bidding and be a nuisance. Well... i think we're really just a bunch of jokers. These guys are funny, light hearted and really quite a diverse group of people. I still don't think we can be identified with a group. Everyone in the group has their own friends and we meet usually impromptu (like who wants to go jb tonight?) kinda thing. We don't, and actually haven't met as a whole 'group'.
We have silent members who resurface every now and then asking who wants to go touring, and we have daily chatters who don't go riding with us. Like I said, we're all just people. Individual people, coming together. A group? Yes. Collective hivemind? No. We don't have monthly group meetings. I don't get any special treatment because I set up the group. Everyone is treated fairly.
Still, you're right. I've been brainwashing some of these guys. I've always been an "All the gear, all the time" person, since my accident. I'm happy to say that I've managed to get a number of them getting, or at least considering proper gear, even the basic stuff such as gloves.
I think of animosity not because of your content. You could have told me the sun was blue (you do realize that the sun is blue?), and I'd probably take it with a tinge of negativity as well. It's the way you phrase it, how you come into this thread and point fingers.
Like I said. I'm sensitive, and I don't like being misunderstood. You won't meet me, and you won't join our chat, so really, how would you know what I, or the group, is about? (my god..if you read the nonsense that goes on, you'd probably have your perspective altered real quick)
But let's go back to the ground. I have riding friends who are too busy, ignore me, or can't click with me because of differences. I'm lonely (yes, sad and alone) and I just want a bunch of people who might go riding with me every now and then. I'd like to think that I have that now.
I have bad experiences with riders too, especially groups. I have bad experiences with people too, especially groups.
There will always be not-so-nice people around, with bad intentions. At the end of the day it requires some judgment on the individual's part. Since we're in the story telling mood..I figure I should share some incidents, in the short time that we've been together as a group.
-
1: Meet at Yishun dam. Mr S bike leaking petrol, died at Labrador park. Some members turn up with tools, a tin of petrol and warm hearts. Couldn't rectify, so they pillion-ed him to meet us anyway, and then settled the bike the following day.
2: Guy needs to send his bike for overhaul and to fix the gearbox, but has no bike to ride to work. One member lets him subride his secondary bike. Let me just say two things. 1, I know that this sets the person up for a big, big mess, if the person he's being nice to isn't nice. But it all worked out, and I'd like to think that sometimes we really ought to have a little more faith in people. I know that makes people naive, and sets them up for being cheated and so on as you've so kindly pointed out, but the few times that it works out, and how it makes a difference, really changes things, and people. 2, these guys were somewhat newly acquainted, in fact, we all are. To see such kindness from one person to another, even taking it out of the whole riding context, is a refreshing experience.
-
I was going to go on with more..but I figured, if you get it, you get it. If you don't, you don't. I have no obligation to convince you. Like I said, it's just me and my aversion to being misunderstood. Again, you're welcome to join us in the chat, if you'd like. You'd be able to form more objective opinions then.
Guys lets put the matter to rest. Sparks fly over written words, because things like tonality, body language and associated context play a huge part in communication and is lost in places like online forums.
I believe Vicious has good intentions, and there are misconceptions from both sides. We've sorted it out mostly, so let's put this behind us. Ride safe all! :)
