may i ask..when using diesel and a toothbrush to scrub the chain, i realised the whole chain becomes dirtier though all the grime has been scrubbed but it still stays onto the chain. And the toothbrush is all black, can it still be reused? And when i tried to wash away the chain, much of the dirt is removed but it seems the diesel has some water repelling properties...water droplets seen. Are all these normal?

What i do when i used kerosene is i will use a small paint brush and not a toothbrush. The kerosene will somehow dissolve all the grims and dirt. After that i will use a clothe to wipe.

I find kerosene better with a soft brush, toothbrush may be hard for the Orings. Those brush for painting will be good. Use a degreaser with kerosene based to remove the diesel should do the job. After that dun forget to lube the chain.

GT85 for me. Spray and wipe with paper towels, prepare lots of paper towels if u want em real clean. No problems with my current x ring chain. No rubber breaking/crack unlike when i use wd40 which breaks the rubber rings from my previous chain.

Tried and Tested

GT85 still not enough. Lubricating properties are too little and weak for use on motorcycle chains.

If you are using WD40, do not spray it directly to the chain to clean the grease away. What I do is, I spray it onto a piece of clean cloth and use that cloth to clean the chain. Then I use a clean portion of the cloth to wipe everything clean. After that, I spray on my PJ1 chain lube to lubricate my bike chain... :)

Aie is right. Spray to clean the dirt and grime, wipe everything (including the sprayed lubricant) off.

WD40/GT85 cleans very well. However, when WD40/GT85 is used and left on the chain, their light lubricant ingredient will actually "fling away" your favourite chain lube once you apply that one over it.

The GT85 bottle does state this:

CONTAINS PTFE

PTFE forms a long lasting protective and lubricating film.

...so it's better to wipe it all off once done.

P.S. to all: Do provide your comments if you think I am wrong. ;)

I use diesel with toothbrush too.

The trick to it is to be generous with the diesel use.

What I do is put the diesel in a flower watering spray gun ($2.70) and spray the diesel at the chain. :D

You will have to spray several times to make it clean.

Later I found a cheap skate way to save on the diesel.

1. Spray as usual, but put a plastic cup uder the chain to collect drip off & the spray that missed. :)

2. Give a few minutes to let the dirt settle to the bottom of the cup.

3. Dip the toothbrush into the cup to wash the toothbrush.

4. Soaked the toothbrush heavily with the diesel, and quickly use it to scrub parts of the chain that has not been cleaned yet. You have to be generous with the diesel, and soak the toothbrush heavily with diesel and scrub it a few times, the running diesel will carry the dirt with it, and drip into the cup.

5. When the chain is thoroughly cleaned, can see the chain is golden (in my case because mine is a X-ring) use newspaper to wipe away the excess diesel.

6a. Wash the chain (optional)

6b. Ride around to dry and warm up the chain.

7. Lube/wax your chain. :)

For your question, Yes! Toothbrush can be reused. Been using the same toothbrush for nearly 3 months already.

Yes,it is normal, since some diesel will be around, unless you use detergent to wash away the diesel from the chain.:)

Great Tips in cleaning your chains....

I have one question.

Kerosene could be bought from most DIY shops....

But as for Diesel???

You guys pump from Petrol stations ah???:cheeky: :cheeky:

Have been using Gt and Wd...

Both works wonders but burns a hole when u become generous to the chains...

hehehehe....

Thanks Guys... :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Bike manual states that to clean chain, just use kerosene. WD40 would actually weaken the seal for you chain. Remember to clean both front and rear sprockets as well...

Why waste money when the cheaper kerosene gets the work done just the same. It's only a good chain lube that will protect your chain...with less fling.
