oh ! just a qns.. why is it not advisable to use engine breaking??? o and machinek > thx for the help i got it done at ta.. ended up is 1 wire came lose.. the guy help me stick it back in alraedy

you're welcome lah, heh afterall i din go down to help u with the wirings :cheeky:

nx time if there's such grounding problems, usually look for loose wires/frays..which was what i was trying to say the other time..haha so now u know =)

and, engine braking isn't all that bad.

cos in essence, you are doing engine brake when you are not throttling. cos engine brake is loosely defined as the braking effect that is obtained from the mechanical force(opposite) in your engine. By using engine braking, there is no over-reliance in your mechanical brakes (aka front/rear brakes) which tends to heat up in prolonged braking (especially true for drum brakes), rendering it less effective. i believed we have mentioned about it before earlier somewhere in this thread.

For disc brakes, when it overheats, the hydraulic fluid (aka brake fluid) will heat up, create bubbles, and have a spongey brake effect. Though the disc brake system dissipates heat much more effectively than the drum brakes.

Of course, correct/proper usage of engine brake is encouraged. Don't try to lower your gear if the speed is too high, just off throttle, depress ur brakes, slow down the speed 1st, den down gear (when appropriate)..etc...

i believe we all learn that in the driving/riding centre.

problem comes when you lower gear excessively at inappropriate speeds (eg. put to gear 2 suddenly when travelling at 80km/h), that will spoil your clutch or gear assembly.

And most likely will lock your rear tyre, skid and *god bless*

Posted

Front brakes, however ineffective it seems, are still useful in reducing the speed of the vehicle. That is because under braking, the vehicle weight will be shifted forward, hence the braking effect from the rear is reduced due to reduced in surface contact on the road (which may also result in skidding)..

if you can't visualise what i meant by 'reduced in surface contact area'..think of an extreme situation (imagine the bike is nose wheelie-ing)

the only thing that will reduce the bike speed, well...is the front brakes.

In short, USE ALL THE AVAILABLE BRAKES YOU HAVE

Another word as to the pro's con's of engine braking...

If using autolube you can engine brake no worries.... high revs low revs etc... this is because the ammount of oil is regulated both by the throttle position AND by the rpm of the engine...

When using premix, the amount of oil getting to the engine is dictated ONLY by throttle position.... thus if going fast downhill and engine braking... things are going to heat up fast....

Just something else to bear in mind... I love my autolube :)

this question goes to guru vig or guru sharpey: my bike when idle, theres a ting-ting sound but its super soft. but onli at times.. but when i ride the sound fades away.. does this mean my piston is in trouble? i always pour 2t regularly when i pump petrol.. following the correct dosage of 2%/litre.. help please. scared very much! hahaha

btw to the muslim pple happy fasting.. may u guys not kheng and not fast. wahahahaha. k gonna go back to bed and slp. goin down TA in the aftnoon.. byebye!!

yus>> issit serious? will it cure if i change my piston rings? so wht are the do's and donts with my engine condition like this?

anyone noes where i can get excel 150 piston rings? my mech says its hard to find it here.. prolly its impossible to find it in uk right sharpey. but if haf do u mind getting it..i will pay u with comission. wahahaha but i doubt they will have it there.. gosh i scared..

Excel 150 uses the same piston as the PX150 right? I can't think that they'd be different... Shops don't sell piston rings in Singapore... because they want to rip you off and sell you a new piston.... You may need a new piston, you may not.... Need to inspect...

I'd be looking to see if all your screws are tight... a sound that you only hear at idle could well be something vibrating becuase it is loose...

Vigano, I'll be back from Europe on the 8th of Oct... I leave the UK to go to the Czech Rep on the 19th of Sept....

Hopefully will be having a chat with Simon Brace today... http://www.b-racetuning.co.uk/

Sounds like the kind of chap who'd be good to have a chat with... If you look up Tavistock on Google Maps you can see my little town... Our house is about 20mins drive from there... Super Ulu :)

Aha....Well, I don't know if they're different or not... something worth looking into.. Can you just run a PX150 piston in there?? It wouldn't be to difficult to compare an Excel and a PX piston... Perhaps they differ... I know next to nuts about 150's :)

Had a looooong chat with Simon Brace (B-Race Tuning) today. Super nice chap, lots of new info in my head now... Two of his Lambretta Exhausts are featured in the Sept Issue of Scootering... Vigano, possibly worth a look as they're billed as being "stelth" :)

I'm now filled with thoughts of shipping my engine over to the UK to have it worked on.... Anyone fancy donating some money?
