[Q&A] How do you secure your bike while touring??

Yeah, we need to bring this message out to all the bikers that are still intent on going to Malaysia -- that the thieves operate with a few men that can simply carry and haul one's bike into a goods vehicle and drive off.

 

On our riding group, we have had 2 riders lose their bikes at the same place already...

 

Moreover, these theives don't usually want to use the bike, they want to make money out of the bike parts. The only suggestions to deter this is what whisperer has done...chain multiple bikes together with a heavy duty chain link. Or chain your bike to a fixed immovable stand like a lamp pole, a metal fence, or a bicycle stand.

I hope the management of these Malaysian places that I'm going to list down doesn't attempt to track me down, but if they do, here's a little disclaimer from me:

 

"Your premises still aren't safe enough for parking, especially bikes, or that bike theft has happened at your premises/place. Forum members deserve to know what your places are, so they can make informed decisions to safeguard their expensive assets."

 

Anyhoo, bikeyroo, without further ado these are the places:

 

1. H*liday Pl*za (that's where 2 of our riders lost their bikes to quick theft)

2. City Sq*are, Komtar

3. Linkedua (2nd link) R&R, southern side facing SG

(populated place, also where trailers and big vehicles park. Thieves still brave enough to steal bikes from open air parking lot when owner not looking. Suspected mode of transport used in this modus operandi are...yep...a big vehicle)

 

There may be more, but this is what I know. And mods, if this infringes the rules and affects the interests of the operation of this forum, let me know, and I will erase the offending stuff as requested.

Hi Beacon, there is nothing wrong in mentioning these places lah. In fact just last week, one of my bike mates after pumping petrol at GP shell station, went in to pay, came out and viola, his new helmet resting on his bike just vanished into thin air! Lucky for him his bike did not participate in the disappearing act.

 

So it is good to remind everyone here of this serious situation in Malaysia. It is not safe to park in Malaysia! Just 2 weeks ago I went to Genting and park my bike in a 'super safe' car park. The bike parking bay is only 10 metres away from the glass door to the security dept. There is also a lot of security personnel and staff moving in and out of that glass door. So very safe rite? When I was leaving that parking bay on my way home, I noticed that in my row of about seven or eight bikes, three bikes (all kup kias) have super security locks. One has a Abus heavy duty 'Granite' lock (which is unpickable) on his sprocket. Another bike has 2 yale locks on his sprocket and 1 lock (all big locks wan. Size is like those that we use for our HDB front gate) on his main stand (must have been specially modified to accomodate the lock. Finally another 1 has 3 big locks on his sprocket!!!!! These 3 bikes are all Malaysian bikes and probably owned by the security personnel. And this is what I can see. The front wheel/disc plate may have some more locks. It portrays a very clear picture. These Malaysian bikers know that thieves are everywhere!

 

So beware, try not to let your bike out of sight while in Malaysia!

Hey people,a very good information posted. Btw will be going to genting end of the month so from what bikeyroo said,i will DEFINITELY CONFIRM take extra extra precaution parking my bike..

Any ideas what kind of bikes these "thieves" usually after?

If the thieves wanted to steal anything from ur bike...it can be done...

 

just my 2 cents,beside the securing "tools"...everytime i tour i will find a hotel with good sercurity...and cover ur motorbike...

 

my past experience in thailand and malaysia is also the same....

Bro,in any case........things will happen...it's either u take the risk...or stuck at singapore....dun tour elsewhere with our bike....and if possible,can share with me ur story of the security+cahoots?i would like to know more...

Hey I agree that COVERING THE BIKE helps in a certain way. Many bikers don't do that. Just by covering the bike, you will lessen the chances of tempting the thieves (or potential thieves). It's something like .. if a woman doesn't expose too much of her body, she will not be luring the wolves. Hahaha I hope you all get what I mean.

what i always do handle lock,cover the bike,most important make gd relation with the guard,tips them well 10 buck the most it takes...hopefully it work 2 all out there.....

 

Handle lock is not a good solution... Can ask around a handle lock can be "unlock" in matter of a hard kick and a few sec:faint:

perhaps dirty ur bike....fade ur paint work....dun bother taking care of your bike will make them look elsewhere :>

 

coz usually people's bike which cost alot will eventually take care(wax polish, bright/vibrant...etc)

use disc brake alarm locks for the front n rear wheels together with u locks also for the front n rear. and sometimes additional cable lock going thru the drilled holes in the brake discs multiple times then secured to the frame.

 

make sure the locks facing inwards so making it difficult to be picked/pryed open.

 

they would have to lift the bike and put each wheel on a wheelie tray for the quickest way to cart it away. and also a mode of transport away from the location. not just a start and go issue.

 

park in a visible area under video CCD. if its the hotel, check with security staff and the front desk manager that actual recordings are done.

 

the longer it takes them, the more visable the location, the more likely your ride will still be there when u next return

Genting 1st World I always park near life lobby.

Got slot just nice for 1 bike.

If more bikes then occupy the lots for car.
