Saving Private Ryan was OK for me. As for Black Hawk Down, I bought the VCD but couldn't bring myself to watch it until the end. Watched the first 20 minutes only and then switched off. Too much talking and the subject matter bored me... :sian:

black hawk down was damn great la bro..

Movie Review On 'Art Of The Devil'

'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned' rings true in the movie, 'Art of the Devil'. A woman, vent forth her fury on the man she once loved by engaging a witch doctor to cast black magic spells on him and his family. Yes, the man is married with kids. After he impregnated her, he refuses to marry her but paid her off instead to abort her baby. Not only that, he arranged for her to be gangraped. Little wonder that revenge consumes her to the very core. The curses and spells cast were enough to make me cringe in horror and disgust. Though it is easy to judge and blame the antagonist in this movie, we have to consider the injustice done to her that led her to be such a venomous, vengeful person. The plot and storyline are straightforward so this movie does not require that much brainpower in order to understand it. Definitely a good Asian horror movie to enjoy... :thumb:

Movie Review On 'Apocalypto'

The latest movie by actor turned director Mel Gibson, brings us to a story that takes place during the ancient Mayan civilization. Similar to his 'Passion Of The Christ' where the Latin language is spoken to give a sense of realism to the movie, 'Apocalypto' was shot in the ancient Mayan language. Don't worry though. Subtitles are provided so that the audience knows what is going on.

'Apocalypto' tells the story of how a man's idyllic existence is crushed by an invading savage tribe. As his home and village burns to the ground, he and his fellow tribesmen are captured for the purpose of sacrificing them to the savage tribe's God. The movie is exciting from the beginning to the very end especially halfway through the movie when the hero makes his escape with his captors in hot pursuit. It is interesting to see how a man, when driven to his wit's end, like a cornered animal, he fights back. The hunted turns the table on his pursuers when they in turn from hunters, become the hunted.

The cinematography of this movie is excellent. We are brought to the lush greenery of the tropical rainforest where most of the action take place. The action is adrenaline pumping as the hero fights hard to survive against his adversaries. Violence is aplenty as the savages butcher and slaughter their captives without any hint of conscience. Heads tumbling down after being decapitated, blood spurting out from dismembered head stumps and smashed up heads and faces are just some of the gory scenes shown. Animism is also prevalent in this movie as the ancient tribe prays to the sun, believing that an eclipse is a sign that their God is full from the human sacrifices performed to appease him.

Though violence and brutal savagery encompass this movie, the themes of family love, instinct to survive and never say die attitude, blend in nicely to strike a balance that makes this movie a joy to watch. For those who are squeamish at heart, just close your eyes during the gory scenes and enjoy the fast paced action of the chase when the hero manages to escape his captors. I believe that Mel Gibson has done it again, producing a movie with money from his own pockets and this movie like 'Braveheart' and 'Passion Of The Christ' will definitely be one of this year's blockbusters... :thumb:

Movie Review On 'Rocky Balboa'

When 'Rocky' won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 1977, it was because the plot of an unknown underdog boxer, given a chance to fight for the World Championship boxing title against Apollo Creed, appeal to the masses. Plus, the audience is able to relate to the human interest story of Rocky's life, a man who from oblivion, slowly rising up in life due to the one in a million chance that was given to him.

Fast forward to the present.Rocky is now a former shadow of himself, playing host to diners in a restaurant, reminiscing his past glories with them. The new world champion now is a brash, young, cocky African American and when a sports program pits him with the Italian Stallion virtually to find out the better boxer of the two different eras, we know that that is the catalyst that will lead to a real match between them.

If you love 'Rocky', then you'll like 'Rocky Balboa' as the main storyline is basically similar albeit Rocky is now much older and just as his long time trainer said before training him, “In order to beat this guy, you need speed. You don’t have it. And your knees can’t take the pounding so hard running is out. And you’ve got arthritis in your neck and calcium deposits on most of your joints so sparring is out.” Other than these setbacks, Rocky still possesses the ‘Eye of the Tiger’ that made him a world champion before.

Personally, I feel that Rocky looks great for a man his age. The human interest story here is rather lackadaisical as the relationship with the new woman in Rocky’s life after the death of his beloved wife, is not fully explored and dealt with. It is the kind of relationship that borders on mutual attraction that could be due to love or friendship. Watch this movie only if you are a fan of the ‘Rocky’ movie franchise just like me…

I am waiting, with baited breath, for the theatrical release of the movie Rocky Balboa. According to the websites, the release date is on the 1st of March 2007. Amazon.com do not have it for sale either.

How did you get access to it so soon?

Movie Review On 'SAW 3'

In order to fully comprehend the storyline of 'SAW 3', it is best that you watch 'SAW' and 'SAW 2' first. This is because the latest installment of the 'SAW' trilogy is the continuation of the two previous movies. The brilliant but sadistic serial killer, Jigsaw, is now on the verge of death and bedridden but he is still capable of orchestrating the most gruesome, deadly traps for his new victims. All thanks to his new protege from 'SAW 2'.

The torturous devices attached to the victims are horrendously fatal. Similar to its two predecessors, the victims are asked to play a game whereby in order to win, they have to overcome a lose-lose situation first. Bloody gory scenes are still aplenty so if you are faint-hearted, this movie is not your cup of tea.

The final twist in 'SAW 3' is not as great as the first movie but a rollercoaster revelation nevertheless as pieces of the puzzle fit into place at the end. Every little thing that Jigsaw had done are not without reasons and that proves to us that he is a maniacal genius. He leads his victims to a journey of immense pain with the intention of cleansing their souls but what’s the point of doing so when spiritual salvation comes at their moment of death? That is just plain perverse to me.

I was rather drained out after watching this movie because it takes a lot of concentration and brainpower to fully understand the antagonist’s motives that are explained through flashback sequences which is precisely why you need to watch the first two movies before watching this. If you don’t, you will feel lost and disoriented by the intriguing twists and turns as the exact reasons why Jigsaw does what he did, unravels nearing the end of the movie. The ending is brilliant and brings closure to the storyline. The writers’ and producers’ decision to market the ‘SAW’ movies as a trilogy is a good call. There are many movies out there where the sequels disappoint. You have my guarantee that the ‘SAW’ trilogy is not one of them… :thumb:
