Hahah got ghost...anyway tis could be OS corruption. If you are using WinXP, try and repair using the Setup CD. Another alternative is to reinstall the OS.

Do check if you really choose 'shut down' as the option instead of 'restart'. Hope that helps.

Anyways, an unexpected reboot of the computer, even if an individual actually wanted Windows XP to shut it down, does leave people scratching their heads.

Until some specialised people began to dig down deeper and to provide suggestions to begin tackling the problem:

Disabling the “restart on system failure” feature may permit the exact cause to be isolated: Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”

In plain English, halfway during the shutdown process, it bluescreen'ed.

But the threadstarter's WinXP was set in a way that whenever there's a bluescreen of death, the computer will automatically restart itself -- that's why the threadstarter didn't have a chance to see that blue screen appearing.

Anyhoo...AjidWhampoa, this is what I'd recommend you do so all of us can have an idea of what's wrong:

[#1] If you do the abovementioned step to disable the restart on system failure option, you will see this kind of bluescreen. Try to make it appear; we need to know what it says:

[#2] How often does this happen? On every shutdown, or sometimes only?

Was this problem occuring all along ever since you installed/re-installed Windows XP or after did a computer repair, or did it just happen one fine day?

No bluescreen.

Did you try to make it appear?

I presume you didn't change anything yet ever since your computer troubles began?
