Hi,

I'm new in town, coming from Belgium, the JCVD, Beers, mussels and chocolate country, i'm investigating how to have a bike here in singapore ...

The bikes themself seem to be expensiver than in belgium (i bought my brand new CB900F 8000 EUR in 2004, sold just before coming  ), but taxes and insurance are quite the same (even cheaper) ...

What do i need to ride a bike here (except the bike ;-)),

insurance, where do i have to ask ?

taxes, where do i have to ask ?

the horrible things everyone has on the handelbar (ERP), where do i have to ask ?

And where to find a second hand bike ? like transalp, africa twin, of in which paper do i have to look ?

Thanks,

Didier

hello Didier,

first of all Welcome To Singapore......

since you wanna get a bike in Singapore....you need to have a valid license first meaning you need to convert your Belgium license to Singapore class license....

in Singapore the motorbike license is split into 3 classes the class 2B,2A,2 respectively if you are holding an international license i think it wont be a problem to convert it....

you just need to go to the traffic police website n check how to convert foreign license to Singapore one....

if you cant do that i guess you need to go for the all the class licenses n each one class have a probation period of 1 year after passing date......

For buying a bike, there are many bike shop that caters to anyone preferences......

normally for a bike there is the need for a 1 time every 10years pay tax which is the COE then there is road tax which is yearly payable then theres the insurance and there are quite a number of different company that you can go to normally the NTUC,AXA,AIG,Mitsui n many more.....thats for a brand new bike

for a 2nd hand bike normally you just need to pay the transfer fee to make you the owner of the bike which i think around 150++ then the COE u don't have to pay

then you need the road tax n insurance.......normally all of the transaction can be done at the bike shop itself so buying bike here is quite hassle free......

for the ugly ting that you mention normally an ERP IU unit comes with the bike

if the previous owner has thrown it away i guess you can ask the bike shop for replacement n it normally cost around 150+++

as for a second hand bike, there are a lot of bike shops in Singapore to cater your needs if you wanna buy one maybe i can help you n bring u around to have a look at bikes here in Singapore But you need to settle your license first.........

hope my info will help you to jump start the riding experience in Singapore......

cheers

Yes, the Traffic Police Department would be your first stop. Goggle for address, forget about calling them on the fone.

Good luck, welcome to our country.

Cheers

Thanks a lot guys ...

i have now a lot to read ;-)

i saw a VFR on ebay, i went to see it ... tampines street 93 ... it's an industrial area ... i don't know if i can trust people overthere ... the bike is outside, without protection, for a long time ... the painting is not very fresh, but with a little wax it could be ok ... and the price seems quite low ... 6000 s$ "buy it now" ... for now still at 4500 ...

Is the maintenance expensive in Singapore ? (there are surely other thread about that ...)

we'll see ...

Haaaaa ...

from what i read ... it is not possible for an expat to ride a bike having more than 400 cc ?????

dun think so...

if u have got your motorcycle license overseas and at least years of riding experience in your country, you should be able to convert your license to class 2.

But if you are holding like a beginner licence back in your home country...then good luck to you, you might only get a class 2B license.

But all of the expats i know here, have class 2 licenses.

so if you have the fully qualified license back home, go to the TP counters in either BBDC, Comfort driving school.

I think it would be easier to convert your license there. (when there, insist you have been riding big bikes for years) they are more likely to convert your foreign license to the class 2 license....

hey bro dnt be to sad at least u can try to go and convert ur license first at least give it a shot.....better die trying then just staying put......

anyway there are alot of options in Singapore to buy bikes

if 6k is the price u have to see whats the condition whats the plate as in how many years left on the COE

then the engine condition also plays apart

dnt look at the outlook of the bike was important is the engine as we will be running on them.......they must be reliable anyway dnt make harsh decision on the purchase survey for the best bikes

as in for maintainance wise....the price is reasonable

there are shops thats sell OEM Honda parts in DESKER Rd n many more places

theres also the HONDA agent as in BOON SIEW at Bukit Timah Rd

so maintainance is at ease unless u ride those very OLD SKOOL bikes where parts are exclusively rare....hahahaha

hope the info will help u

cheers

welcome welcome, yes after converting n all the hassle of school. you can find alot of shop around the country, like bukit merah, the Mah pte ltd@ serangoon, ubi and kakit bukit. i live around central area so i know the place around in the heart of the country. after getting the bike ERP UI you can get it from the shop. Last but not least here in local, speeding is allow when no camera man or ppl in blue/white around...haha... if u get caught back to square one. Restart the whole riding course again....

I'll be on a K12R on a UK license soon too.

UK license is good for a year in Singapore then you have to take a 'highway code' test

Would think other EU licenses are the same.
