ST. MARK

This is the same who is called John Mark; and who traveled from

Jerusalem to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, and afterward into other

countries. Acts 12:25; 12:5.

It is supposed that he wrote this gospel at Rome, about A. D. 64, and that

he died at Alexandria, in in the eighth year of the reign of Nero, the Roman

emperor. It is very probable that he had seen the gospel written by St.

Matthew, as he omits several things which are amply detailed by that

evangelist. At the same time he inserts several curious particulars not

mentioned by any of the others.

The Gospel According to

MARK

CHAPTER 1

1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

1:2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger

before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

1:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of

the Lord, make his paths straight.

1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of

repentance for the remission of sins.

1:5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of

Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan,

confessing their sins.

1:6 And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin

about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

1:7 And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me,

the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and

unloose.

1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you

with the Holy Ghost.

1:9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth

of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

1:10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens

opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

1:11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved

Son, in whom I am well pleased.

1:12 And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

84

1:13 And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan;

and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee,

preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at

hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

1:16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew

his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

1:17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you

to become fishers of men.

1:18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

1:19 And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son

of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship

mending their nets.

1:20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee

in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

1:21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath

day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one

that had authority, and not as the scribes.

1:23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and

he cried out,

1:24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of

Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art,

the Holy One of God.

1:25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of

him.

1:26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud

voice, he came out of him.

1:27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among

themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this?

85

for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and

they do obey him.

1:28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region

round about Galilee.

1:29 And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they

entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

1:30 But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell

him of her.

1:31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and

immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

1:32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that

were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.

1:33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.

1:34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out

many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they

knew him.

1:35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out,

and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

1:36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.

1:37 And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek

for thee.

1:38 And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may

preach there also: for therefore came I forth.

1:39 And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and

cast out devils.

1:40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down

to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me

clean.

1:41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and

touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

1:42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed

from him, and he was cleansed.

86

1:43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;

1:44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy

way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those

things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

1:45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad

the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into

the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him

from every quarter.

PREFACE

TO THE GOSPEL

ACCORDING TO

ST. MARK

WITH A SHORT ACCOUNT OF HIS LIFE

FOR an explication of the word GOSPEL, and the title SAINT, see the

Preface to Matthew {Matthew 1:1.} p. ii-v. MARK. This person, the

second in the commonly received order of the four evangelists, was named

JOHN MARK, and was the son of a pious woman called Mary, who dwelt

at Jerusalem: she was an early believer, and the disciples used to meet at

her house. Peter, having been delivered out of prison by an angel, came to

the house of Mary, mother of John, whose surname was Mark, where

many were gathered together praying, Acts 12:12. This very first mention

of John Mark assures us of Peter’s intimacy in that family: it is almost

universally allowed that Mark, mentioned by Peter, 1 Peter 5:13, is this

evangelist, and that he is the same with him who is called sister’s son to

Barnabas, Colossians4:10, and is supposed to have been converted by

Peter to the Christian faith. Mr. W. Whiston supposes him to have been

Peter’s own son. See his Primitive New Test. Notes at the end. He

traveled from Jerusalem to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, Acts 12:25,

and some short time after he accompanied them to other countries as their

minister, Acts 13:5. When they returned to the continent, and came on

shore at Perga in Pamphylia, he departed from them and returned to

Jerusalem, Acts 13:13. Afterwards he would have gone with Paul and

Barnabas, but the former refused to take him, because of his having left

them at Pamphylia; Paul and Barnabas then separated, and Mark

582

accompanied his uncle Barnabas to Cyprus, Acts 15:36-41. Afterwards

Paul and he were fully reconciled, as evidently appears from 2 Timothy

4:11: Take Mark, and bring him with thee; for he is profitable to me for the

ministry. This appears also from Philemon, Phm 24, where Mark is styled

Paul’s fellow-laborer; and from Colossians4:10, where we find the apostle

recommending him in a particular manner to the Church of God at that

place. He is generally supposed to have been particularly intimate with St.

Peter, to have written his Gospel at ROME, A. D. 64, and to have died at

Alexandria in Egypt, in the eighth year of the reign of Nero. Dr. LARDNER

has fully proved that Mark the evangelist, and John Mark nephew to

Barnabas, were one and the same person. See his Works, vol. vi. p. 77, etc.

How Mark composed his Gospel, is a question not yet decided among

learned men. Many of the primitive fathers, such as Papias, Clemens,

Alexandrinus, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Eusebius, etc., believed that he

was only the amanuensis of St. Peter; that this apostle, through modesty,

would not put his name to the work, but dictated the whole account, and

Mark wrote it down from his mouth. St. Augustine appears to have been

the first who maintained that Mark abridged St. Matthew’s Gospel; and

that it is not to be considered as an original work:-on this opinion several

remarks will be made in the course of these notes. Others suppose that

Mark compiled it, partly out of Matthew’s Gospel, and partly out of the

Gospel of Luke. But most of these are conjectures which appear to have

very little foundation. Critics are also divided concerning the language in

which it was written, and the people to whom it was sent. Some have

contended for a Latin original, because of several Latin words found in it,

such as spekoulatwr, Mark 6:27, one of the guard; kenturiwn, Mark

15:39, 44, 46, a centurion, a captain of one hundred men; susshmon,

Mark 14:44, a signal, a sign agreed on. But such words are better accounted

for by supposing that his Gospel was written for the use of the Roman

people; and that it is on this account that he wholly passes by the

genealogy of our Lord, as being a point of no consequence to Gentile

converts, though very necessary for the Jews, and especially the Jews of

Palestine. That it was originally written in Greek, is a point now

acknowledged by almost all learned men.

It may be necessary to state the things omitted by Mark in the beginning

of his Gospel which are mentioned by Matthew and Luke.

The office of John the Baptist. (1-8)

The baptism and temptation of Christ. (9-13)

Christ preaches and calls disciples. (14-22)

He casts out an unequaled spirit. (23-28)

He heals many diseased. (29-39)

He heals a leper. (40-45)

Mark 1:1

Vs. 1-8: Isaiah and Malachi each spake concerning the beginning of the gospel of Jesus

Christ, in the ministry of John. From these prophets we may observe, that Christ, in his

gospel, comes among us, bringing with him a treasure of grace, and a sceptre of

government. Such is the corruption of the world, that there is great opposition to his

progress. When God sent his Son into the world, he took care, and when he sends him

into the heart, he takes care, to prepare his way before him. John thinks himself unworthy

of the meanest office about Christ. The most eminent saints have always been the most

humble. They feel their need of Christ’s atoning blood and sanctifying Spirit, more than

others. The great promise Christ makes in his gospel to those who have repented, and

have had their sins forgiven them, is, they shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost; shall

be purified by his graces, and refreshed by his comforts. We use the ordinances, word,

and sacraments without profit and comfort, for the most part, because we have not of that

Divine light within us; and we have it not because we ask it not; for we have his word

that cannot fail, that our heavenly Father will give this light, his Holy Spirit, to those

that ask it.

Mark 1:9

Vs. 9-13: Christ’s baptism was his first public appearance, after he had long lived

unknown. How much hidden worth is there, which in this world is not known! But

sooner or later it shall be known, as Christ was. He took upon himself the likeness of

sinful flesh; and thus, for our sakes, he sanctified himself, that we also might be

sanctified, and be baptized with him, John 17:19. See how honorably God owned him,

when he submitted to John’s baptism. He saw the Spirit descending upon him like a

dove. We may see heaven opened to us, when we perceive the Spirit descending and

working upon us. God’s good work in us, is sure evidence of his good will towards us,

and preparations for us. As to Christ’s temptation, Mark notices his being in the

wilderness and that he was with the wild beasts. It was an instance of his Father’s care of

him, which encouraged him the more that his Father would provide for him. Special

protections are earnests of seasonable supplies. The serpent tempted the first Adam in the

garden, the Second Adam in the wilderness; with different success indeed; and ever since

he still tempts the children of both, in all places and conditions. Company and

conversation have their temptations; and being alone, even in a wilderness, has its own

also. No place or state exempts, no business, not lawful laboring, eating, or drinking,

not even fasting and praying; often in these duties there are the most assaults, but in

them is the sweetest victory. The ministration of the good angels is matter of great

comfort in reference to the malignant designs of the evil angels; but much more does it

comfort us, to have the indwelling of God the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

Mark 1:14

Vs. 14-22: Jesus began to preach in Galilee, after that John was put in prison. If some be

laid aside, others shall be raised up, to carry on the same work. Observe the great truths

Christ preached. By repentance we give glory to our Creator whom we have offended; by

faith we give glory to our Redeemer who came to save us from our sins. Christ has

joined these two together, and let no man think to put them asunder. Christ puts honor

upon those who, though mean in this world, are diligent in their business and kind to

one. Industry and unity are good and pleasant, and the Lord Jesus commands a blessing

on them. Those whom Christ calls, must leave all to follow him; and by his grace he

makes them willing to do so. Not that we must needs go out of the world, but we must

sit loose to the world; forsake every thing that is against our duty to Christ, and that

cannot be kept without hurt to our souls. Jesus strictly kept the Sabbath day, by

applying himself unto, and abounding in the Sabbath work, in order to which the

Sabbath rest was appointed. There is much in the doctrine of Christ that is astonishing;

and the more we hear it, the more cause we see to admire it.

Mark 1:23

Vs. 23-28: The devil is an unequaled spirit, because he has lost all the purity of his

nature, because he acts in direct opposition to the Holy Spirit of God, and by his

suggestions defiles the spirits of men. There are many in our assemblies who quietly

attend under merely formal teachers; but if the Lord come with faithful ministers and holy

doctrine, and by his convincing Spirit, they are ready to say, like this man, What have

we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth! No disorder could enable a man to know Jesus to

be the Holy One of God. He desires to have nothing to do with Jesus, for he despairs of

being saved by him, and dreads being destroyed by him. See whose language those

speak, that say to the Almighty, Depart from us. This unequaled spirit hated and dreaded

Christ, because he knew him to be a Holy One; for the carnal mind is enmity against

God, especially against his holiness. When Christ by his grace delivers souls out of the

hands of Satan, it is not without tumult in the soul; for that spiteful enemy will disquiet

those whom he cannot destroy. This put all who saw it upon considering, What is this

new doctrine? A work as great often is wrought now, yet men treat it with contempt and

neglect. If this were not so, the conversion of a notorious wicked man to a sober,

righteous, and godly life, by the preaching of a crucified Savior, would cause many to

ask, What doctrine is this?

Mark 1:29

Vs. 29-39: Wherever Christ comes, he comes to do good. He cures, that we may

minister to him, and to others who are his, and for his sake. Those kept from public

ordinances by sickness or other real hindrances, may expect the Savors gracious presence;

he will soothe their sorrows, and abate their pains. Observe how numerous the patients

were. When others speed well with Christ, it should quicken us in seeking after him.

Christ departed into a solitary place. Though he was in no danger of distraction, or of

temptation to vain-glory, yet he retired. Those who have the most business in public,

and of the best kind, must yet sometimes be alone with God.

Mark 1:40

Vs. 40-45: We have here Christ’s cleansing of a leper. It teaches us to apply to the

Savior with great humility, and with full submission to his will, saying, “Lord, if thou

wilt,” without any doubt of Christ’s readiness to help the distressed. See also what to

expect from Christ; that according to our faith it shall be to us. The poor leper said, If

thou wilt. Christ readily wills favors to those who readily refer themselves to his will.

Christ would have nothing done that looked like seeking praise of the people. But no

reasons now exist why we should hesitate to spread the praises of Christ.

CHAPTER 2

2:1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was

noised that he was in the house.

2:2 And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there

was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door:

and he preached the word unto them.

2:3 And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was

born of four.

2:4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they

uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up,

they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

2:5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son,

thy sins be forgiven thee.

2:6 But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in

their hearts,

2:7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins

but God only?

2:8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so

reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye

these things in your hearts?

2:9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be

forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

87

2:10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to

forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

2:11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into

thine house.

2:12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before

them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God,

saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

2:13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude

resorted unto him, and he taught them.

2:14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at

the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose

and followed him.

2:15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many

publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples:

for there were many, and they followed him.

2:16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans

and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth

and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have

no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call

the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

2:18 And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and

they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of

the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

2:19 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber

fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the

bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

2:20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away

from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

2:21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else

the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the

rent is made worse.

88

2:22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine

doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will

be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

2:23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the

sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the

ears of corn.

2:24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the

sabbath day that which is not lawful?

2:25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when

he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?

2:26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the

high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat

but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?

2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not

man for the sabbath:

2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath

CHAPTER 2

Christ heals one sick of the palsy. (1-12)

Levi’s call, and the entertainment given to Jesus. (13-17)

Why Christ’s disciples did not fast. (18-22)

He justifies his disciples for plucking corn on the Sabbath. (23-28)

Mark 2:1

Vs. 1-12: It was this man’s misery that he needed to be so carried, and shows the

suffering state of human life; it was kind of those who so carried him, and teaches the

compassion that should be in men, toward their fellow-creatures in distress. True faith

and strong faith may work in various ways; but it shall be accepted and approved by

Jesus Christ. Sin is the cause of all our pains and sicknesses. The way to remove the

effect, is to take away the cause. Pardon of sin strikes at the root of all diseases. Christ

proved his power to forgive sin, by showing his power to cure the man sick of the palsy.

And his curing diseases was a figure of his pardoning sin, for sin is the disease of the

soul; when it is pardoned, it is healed. When we see what Christ does in healing souls,

we must own that we never saw the like. Most men think themselves whole; they feel no

need of a physician, therefore despise or neglect Christ and his gospel. But the

convinced, humbled sinner, who despairs of all help, excepting from the Savior, will

show his faith by applying to him without delay.

Mark 2:13

Vs. 13-17: Matthew was not a good character, or else, being a Jew, he would never have

been a publican, that is, a tax-gatherer for the Romans. However, Christ called this

publican to follow him. With God, through Christ, there is mercy to pardon the greatest

sins, and grace to change the greatest sinners, and make them holy. A faithful,

fair-dealing publican was rare. And because the Jews had a particular hatred to an office

which proved that they were subject to the Romans, they gave these tax-gatherers an ill

name. But such as these our blessed Lord did not hesitate to converse with, when he

appeared in the likeness of sinful flesh. And it is no new thing for that which is both well

done and well designed, to be slandered, and turned to the reproach of the wisest and best

of men. Christ would not withdraw, though the Pharisees were offended. If the world had

been righteous, there had been no occasion for his coming, either to preach repentance, or

to purchase forgiveness. We must not keep company with ungodly men out of love to

their vain conversation; but we are to show love to their souls, remembering that our

good Physician had the power of healing in himself, and was in no danger of taking the

disease; but it is not so with us. In trying to do good to others, let us be careful we do

not get harm to ourselves.

Mark 2:18

Vs. 18-22: Strict professors are apt to blame all that do not fully come up to their own

views. Christ did not escape slanders; we should be willing to bear them, as well as

careful not to deserve them; but should attend to every part of our duty in its proper order

and season.

Mark 2:23

Vs. 23-28: The Sabbath is a sacred and Divine institution; a privilege and benefit, not a

task and drudgery. God never designed it to be a burden to us, therefore we must not

make it so to ourselves. The Sabbath was instituted for the good of mankind, as living

in society, having many wants and troubles, preparing for a state of happiness or misery.

Man was not made for the Sabbath, as if his keeping it could be of service to God, nor

was he commanded to keep its outward observances to his real hurt. Every observance

respecting it, is to be interpreted by the rule of mercy.

again i attended my church's sat miracle rally just now. Was told by the senior pastor to date, there must have been thousands of miracles performed over the past years in this church. I believe miracles dun just happened during Jesus's time. But before He return to Heaven, He empowered all His disciples to perform miracles in His holy name too.

CHAPTER 3

3:1 And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there

which had a withered hand.

3:2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath

day; that they might accuse him.

3:3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand

forth.

3:4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath

days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their

peace.

3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being

grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man,

Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was

restored whole as the other.

89

3:6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with

the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

3:7 But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a

great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea,

3:8 And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan;

and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had

heard what great things he did, came unto him.

3:9 And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him

because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.

3:10 For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for

to touch him, as many as had plagues.

3:11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and

cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

3:12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him

known.

3:13 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he

would: and they came unto him.

3:14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he

might send them forth to preach,

3:15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

3:16 And Simon he surnamed Peter;

3:17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and

he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

3:18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and

Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and

Simon the Canaanite,

3:19 And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an

house.

3:20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so

much as eat bread.

3:21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him:

for they said, He is beside himself.

90

3:22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath

Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.

3:23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How

can Satan cast out Satan?

3:24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot

stand.

3:25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

3:26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot

stand, but hath an end.

3:27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods,

except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his

house.

3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of

men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never

forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

3:30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

3:31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing

without, sent unto him, calling him.

3:32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold,

thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.

3:33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my

brethren?

3:34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said,

Behold my mother and my brethren!

3:35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother,

and my sister, and mother.

CHAPTER 3

The withered hand healed. (1-5)

The people resort to Christ. (6-12)

The apostles called. (13-21)

The blasphemy of the scribes. (22-30)

Christ’s relatives. (31-35)

Mark 3:1

Vs. 1-5: This man’s case was piteous; he had a withered hand, which disabled him from

working for his living; and those that are so, are the most proper objects of charity. Let

those be helped that cannot help themselves. But stubborn infidels, when they can say

nothing against the truth, yet will not yield. We hear what is said amiss, and see what is

done amiss; but Christ looks at the root of bitterness in the heart, the blindness and

hardness of that, and is grieved. Let hard-hearted sinners tremble to think of the anger

with which he will look upon them shortly, when the day of his wrath comes. The great

healing day now is the Sabbath, and the healing place the house of prayer; but the

healing power is of Christ. The gospel command is like that recorded here: though our

hands are withered, yet, if we will not stretch them out, it is our own fault that we are

not healed. But if we are healed, Christ, his power and grace, must have all the glory.

Mark 3:6

Vs. 6-12: All our sicknesses and calamities spring from the anger of God against our

sins. Their removal, or the making them blessings to us, was purchased to us by the

blood of Christ. But the plagues and diseases of our souls, of our hearts, are chiefly to be

dreaded; and He can heal them also by a word. May more and more press to Christ to be

healed of these plagues, and to be delivered from the enemies of their souls.

Mark 3:13

Vs. 13-21: Christ calls whom he will; for his grace is his own. He had called the

apostles to separate themselves from the crowd, and they came unto him. He now gave

them power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils. May the Lord send forth more and

more of those who have been with him, and have learned of him to preach his gospel, to

be instruments in his blessed work. Those whose hearts are enlarged in the work of God,

can easily bear with what is inconvenient to themselves, and will rather lose a meal than

an opportunity of doing good. Those who go on with zeal in the work of God, must

expect hindrances, both from the hatred of enemies, and mistaken affection of friends, and

need to guard against both.

Mark 3:22

Vs. 22-30: It was plain that the doctrine of Christ had a direct tendency to break the

devil’s power; and it was as plain, that the casting of him out of the bodies of people,

confirmed that doctrine; therefore Satan could not support such a design. Christ gave an

awful warning against speaking such dangerous words. It is true the gospel promises,

because Christ has purchased, forgiveness for the greatest sins and sinners; but by this

sin, they would oppose the gifts of the Holy Ghost after Christ’s ascension. Such is the

enmity of the heart, that unconverted men pretend believers are doing Satan’s work,

when sinners are brought to repentance and newness of life.

Mark 3:31

Vs. 31-35: It is a great comfort to all true Christians, that they are dearer to Christ than

mother, brother, or sister as such, merely as relations in the flesh would have been, even

had they been holy. Blessed be God, this great and gracious privilege is ours even now;

for though Christ’s bodily presence cannot be enjoyed by us, his spiritual presence is not

denied us.

Luke

12:37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they

believed not on him:

12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he

spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the

arm of the Lord been revealed?

12:39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,

12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they

should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and

be converted, and I should heal them.

12:41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

Matt

7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the

kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which

is in heaven.

7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not

prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and

in thy name done many wonderful works?

7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from

me, ye that work iniquity.

7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth

them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon

a rock:

7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,

and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a

rock.

13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those

miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying

to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to

the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the

image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as

would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and

bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or

the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number

of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six

hundred threescore and six.

CHAPTER 4

4:1 And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered

unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in

the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.

91

4:2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them

in his doctrine,

4:3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:

4:4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and

the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.

4:5 And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and

immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:

4:6 But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no

root, it withered away.

4:7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked

it, and it yielded no fruit.

4:8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up

and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and

some an hundred.

4:9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

4:10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve

asked of him the parable.

4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery

of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these

things are done in parables:

4:12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may

hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be

converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

4:13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then

will ye know all parables?

4:14 The sower soweth the word.

4:15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but

when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away

the word that was sown in their hearts.

4:16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who,

when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with

gladness;

92

4:17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time:

afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s

sake, immediately they are offended.

4:18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the

word,

4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the

lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh

unfruitful.

4:20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear

the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold,

some sixty, and some an hundred.

4:21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a

bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?

4:22 For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was

any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.

4:23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

4:24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what

measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that

hear shall more be given.

4:25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from

him shall be taken even that which he hath.

4:26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed

into the ground;

4:27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should

spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.

4:28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the

ear, after that the full corn in the ear.

4:29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the

sickle, because the harvest is come.

4:30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or

with what comparison shall we compare it?

93

4:31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the

earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:

4:32 But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all

herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air

may lodge under the shadow of it.

4:33 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as

they were able to hear it.

4:34 But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were

alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

4:35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them,

Let us pass over unto the other side.

4:36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even

as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little

ships.

4:37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the

ship, so that it was now full.

4:38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and

they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we

perish?

4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace,

be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

4:40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye

have no faith?

4:41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner

of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

The parable of the sower. (1-20)

Other parables. (21-34)

Christ stills the tempest. (35-41)

Mark 4:1

Vs. 1-20: This parable contained instruction so important, that all capable of hearing

were bound to attend to it. There are many things we are concerned to know; and if we

understand not the plain truths of the gospel, how shall we learn those more difficult! It

will help us to value the privileges we enjoy as disciples of Christ, if we seriously

consider the deplorable state of all who have not such privileges. In the great field of the

church, the word of God is dispensed to all. Of the many that hear the word of the

gospel, but few receive it, so as to bring forth fruit. Many are much affected with the word

for the present, who yet receive no abiding benefit. The word does not leave abiding

impressions upon the minds of men, because their hearts are not duly disposed to receive

it. The devil is very busy about careless hearers, as the fowls of the air go about the seed

that lies above ground. Many continue in a barren, false profession, and go down to hell.

Impressions that are not deep, will not last. Many do not mind heart-work, without

which religion is nothing. Others are hindered from profiting by the word of God, by

abundance of the world. And those who have but little of the world, may yet be ruined

by indulging the body. God expects and requires fruit from those who enjoy the gospel, a

temper of mind and Christian graces daily exercised, Christian duties duly performed. Let

us look to the Lord, that by his new-creating grace our hearts may become good ground,

and that the good seed of the word may produce in our lives those good words and works

which are through Jesus Christ, to the praise and glory of God the Father.

Mark 4:21

Vs. 21-34: These declarations were intended to call the attention of the disciples to the

word of Christ. By his thus instructing them, they were made able to instruct others; as

candles are lighted, not to be covered, but to be placed on a candlestick, that they may

give light to a room. This parable of the good seed, shows the manner in which the

kingdom of God makes progress in the world. Let but the word of Christ have the place

it ought to have in a soul, and it will show itself in a good conversation. It grows

gradually: first the blade; then the ear; after that the full corn in the ear. When it is sprung

up, it will go forward. The work of grace in the soul is, at first, but the day of small

things; yet it has mighty products even now, while it is in its growth; but what will

there be when it is perfected in heaven!

Mark 4:35

Vs. 35-41: Christ was asleep in the storm, to try the faith of his disciples, and to stir

them up to pray. Their faith appeared weak, and their prayers strong. When our wicked

hearts are like the troubled sea which cannot rest, when our passions are unruly, let us

think we hear the law of Christ, saying, Be silent, be dumb. When without are fightings,

and within are fears, and the spirits are in a tumult, if he say, “Peace, be still,” there is a

great calm at once. Why are ye so fearful? Though there may be cause for some fear, yet

not for such fear as this. Those may suspect their faith, who can have such a thought as

that Jesus careth not though his people perish. How imperfect are the best of saints! Faith

and fear take their turns while we are in this world; but ere long, fear will be overcome,

and faith will be lost in sight.

I like to encourage everyone to read God's Words daily.

Reading the Holy Bible is like reading God's diary & understanding his character & Will; so we can conform to it.

We can also hear Him speaking to us thru His words as we read & meditate on His words. Do read with a quiet & prayerful heart; you will sense His Holy presence.

Do this everyday, and we'll be recharged & empowered again to face the world's trials & tribulations.

Psalms 119:105

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And light unto my path.

John 15:7 (New International Version)

7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

-- it's true & it really works for me. :)

Tim, yup ..i m tryin to do dat lor....

Its great dat ther r so many healings n miracles performed at Lighthouse...

Its said dat Sgpore is like hmmm Antioch of old days.... wil b d centre of d evangelism wave to spread d gospels...

Miracles r important both for helping our bros n sis in needs and also to strengthen d faith for others...

but its also equally important that even if there r no signs or miracles or healings,,...we shd jus hold on to GOD's words n have faith...
