how old is ur machine?

and what are the specs?

any beeps when u startup?

what and when was ur latest hardware 'upgrade' or changes?

1. open up ur box and check whether the cpu & hsf is latched properly to the motherboard. if u dismantle the 2, re-apply thermal paste.

2. check whether ur motherboard has any 'bloated' capacitors.

prolly the 1st.

I've had same issue wit my old p3 dell optiplex which i use as a development server.

reapplied thermal paste and problem solved.

there are a few possibilities bro.

1. CPU fan not moving and so the CPU shoot up at a high temp quickly. MB won't let the system to boot up upon reaching a certain temp. eg 75C.

2. Heatsink bracket broken and cause it to tilt one side and not resting on the CPU properly.

3. As kambing mention, capacitor on motherboard bloated due to powersupply.

Check it out and let us know. We can do a follow up later...

what kambing said could be true.

coz it happend to me too... itchy fingers open up and take out mem, cpu, clean dust... but when putting back together, didnt attach CPU heat sink properly..

comp shut down once turned on..

check MO section, Palmer is doing IT services MO.. u can ask him if u dont know stuff..

btw... 6 year old PC is not worth to ugrade.. most propably, RAM model could be discontinued so u have to pay more than what u can get at recent models.

my old pc also just use it to surf net..

actually bro,

if your machine has been running fine all the while for 6 yrs..

there is no such thing as the fault lies with ur pc ram not enough..

why you would need more ram:

1. kiasu; to u more means good  (like me  )

2. hardcore digital imaging freak; using your pc to run memory intensive programs like photoshop etc.. only then that xtra ram comes in handy (no lag)

3. cannot meet game/program minimum requirement for ram

4. ram faulty (u need a replacement then not an upgrade) :dot:

the next time u decide to get someone to change parts for you..

check out part prices at sim lim (refer link below) and request for receipt..

http://sls.vr-zone.com/

btw, check out youtube on cpu, heatsink fan (hsf) and thermal paste..

below link should get you a rough idea what you need to do..

note: you only need to put 1 dot thermal paste and spread it around..

some clips show them putting too much thermal paste

as for the latching of hsf onto the cpu, that one is pretty much very direct

make sure the base of the hsf sits flat onto the cpu..

also check the motherboard for bloated capacitors..

it could also be the power supply but we try the cheap fix 1st k..

ditto,

if i remember correctly, new entry level machine exclusive monitor/keyboard/mouse at sim lim can get around $300-$350

6yr old machine.. could be the thermal pad/paste

TS should 1st try applying new thermal paste and making sure the hsf is sitting flat onto the processor..

normal titan thermal paste at weng cheong (sim lim) sellin $2..

neighbourhood IT shop also have $2 thermal paste..

if kiasu then buy arctic silver AS5 or MX-1 for $13

my rule of thumb.. always try the cheap fix 1st :D

My babies photos all inside the hard disk leh.... :( I dun need a powerful PC, just basic wif storage space for photos can liao. Anyway i will try fix first la, used 6 yrs liao leh, got feelings....

this one is really up to u bro..

to fix or to buy new one..

different ppl different opinions..

if u choose the latter, u can:

1. install ur old harddisk into new system as non system drive or

2. buy a 3.5" hdd casing to put ur old harddisk in and use it as an external hard disk. Poke into new system USB and transfer files.

hope this helps.

cheers.
