HYPER VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control System)

 

On 19 Jan 1999, HONDA announced the development of a new HYPER VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control System) valve control system. This new system combines environmental-friendliness and increase output at all engine speed with 6.6% improvement in fuel efficiency. It uses "direct-actuated" hydraulic valve control technology to determine and allows for variation of the number of valves active depending on engine speed, but also provides for optimum lift amount and actuation timing of each valve thanks to specially designed camshaft profiles.

At low to medium engine speeds, one intake valve and one exhaust valve out of four valves in each cylinder remain inactive, leaving only two active valves per cylinder. This helps increase intake air speed and generate a swirl effect within the combustion chamber for increased power output. Reduced friction losses also contribute to improvement in fuel efficiency. At higher engine speeds all four valves in each cylinder are activated , to meet the increased gas flow requirements of higher revs.

In Jan 2002, HYPER VTEC evolved into Spec II with the development aim to allow everybody to feel the power drive over the entire ranges. This was a result of voices in particular beginners, were unable to fully utilize the four-valve stage from above the revolution range of 6,700rpm. SPEC II achieved increasing torque in the middle speed range and smoother power by refining the valve timing, intake and exhaust systems, and the valve switchover timing revolution from two to four valves was changed from 6,750rpm to 6,300rpm. It resulted in a powerful and sporty engines, enabling one to actually feel VTEC in all driving ranges from low to top.

 

On Dec 2003, SPEC III was introduced. The switchover timing for a 6 speed only was changed from 6,300rpm to 6,750rpm to improve fuel consumption in cruising over high speed roads without spoiling the cheerful drive.

 

How VTEC Came About?

 

It was believed that VTEC originated from REV, a revolution responding type valve pausing mechanism in 1983. At that time, the demand for high power for sports bike engines lead to the studies to reconcile high power in high revolution range and excellent drivablity and high efficiency from idling throughout all ranges. An epoch-making variable valve system came into being, which enables switching over from two valves to four valves. This technology later developed into the variable valve timing mechanism, VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control system), which forms the nucleus of automobile engines.
