Im riding a Honda S4 vtec 3 year 2006.

I used to get about 320km out of about 15l of grade 95 petrol before hitting reserve during the 1st year i bought the bike..

but recently it is difficult to get even 300km out of the same amount.

i service my bike every 6-9mths at least. normal stuff change oil filter and oil etc..

a friend also told me that it could be the air filter.

recently i just changed to a KNN air flter. It doesnt make much of a diffrence.. what else do i need to do to get back the original state. petrol price is rising all the way up... need to save where it is possible.

any suggestions?? :help: :help: :help:

Maybe during the 1st year u bought ur bike, u r riding ur bike in a more gentle & slower in speed?

But after gaining confidence ur habit is different...

Try changing ur riding habits...

Steps to do a proper KNNBCCB with middle finger.

1. Bow down slightly, looking intensely at objective

2. Like a raging bull, hop and jog slowly towards objective

3. Take your left palm and slap it hard on the right mid-arm with a SLAP!

4. With charisma, raise right arm, whilst showing middle finger (with left palm trapped in bend right arm)

5. Shout! KNNBCCB

dont go so fast that your VTEC opens.

I usually go no more than 110km on expressways.. the rpm is about 6-7... does the vtec open by then??

try synergy5000 from mobil/esso

gives more than shell n also adjust riding habits might help.

different bikes gives good economy at certain speeds.

big bikes ard 100-110km/h. s4 should be ard 80-90km/h.

Ur fuel tank is smaller than the S4 mah . Anyway , 600s mostly tis range . My f4i went arnd 260km till reserve onli becos it had a bigger tank .

Best way to calculate ur fuel economy is calculating the mileage per km ridden .

My CBR600 F4 can get 350km :cheer:

Then I had to pumped 16.5L :faint:

I try to maintain my rpm at max 5k most of the time.. yah I know.. wussy :cheeky:

my bajaj can hit 700 km before turning on the reserve. calculating my fuel consumption last i filled petrol, i got a figure of 42.9km for every liter of petrol.

My G4 can barely hit 300km before going dry. 260km without reserve. Thats around 18km for every liter of petrol? Bleh. With greater displacement comes greater consumption.

My S4 can get 320 before reserve. 370/80 full tank. And I use vtec quite alot, often to overtake cars. The rest of the way, cruising speed at 6.8rpm which is about 105km/h? I am riding Spec1, so I can afford to cruise at higher rpm w/o activating vtec..

Make sure ur chain and sprocket are not worn out. Ur carbs are properly tuned. Tyres are properly inflated. You can also try playing with sprocket ratio.. alot of traffic lights in ur journey, use a ratio for pickup. Alot of expressway riding, use a ratio for top speed. That way u can travel at lower rpm yet receive enough power for ur journey..

If the mechanic tells you that "change sprocket lose power one!!!" slap him in the face. Most 2B bikes in the market have sprockets optimised for city sprints, giving fast acceleration but cruise RPMs are excessively high. Why - it wastes fuel and generates excessive heat? Make the bike look powerful :)

Y125Z with highway sprockets can exceed "manufacturer specified" range by a fair margin. And the cruise speed on 6th gear is 120-140kph. Cheap pocket rocket!

Tempted to do the same with my Phantom but...... I'm keeping the stock sprockets although top speed is very limited. The 41 rear sprocket means I don't have to use much effort for pickup. Which saves a lot of fuel in typical traffic speeds.

FC is 42km/l with modified airbox (commuting to and from work, at mostly full throttle)

Best fuel economical way for SP is not to ride it. :shy:

Anyone can ride a bike. Being a biker, is a state of mind.

so its bigger rear sprocket for city start stop type and smaller sprocket for frequent highway riding?

Easier if you visualise my dilemma back in 2004 riding to and from camp. To get to comfortable speeds I had to rev my Yamaha up to 7500rpm to hit 120kph indicated (which is an 'okay' 95kph on car speedos).

I didn't want to mess around with gearings but since I knew what the final drive tuning thing did in Need for Speed underground I swapped out the 15 - front and 41 back sprockets into 19-37 which allowed me to reach the same cruising speed at much lower revs (120 @ 6000rpm)

I could now use all 6 gears while riding, instead of changing 6 within 20 seconds of leaving a traffic light and riding all the way on 6, overrevving and overheating.

Generally dropping the number of teeth on the back, or increasing the size of the front will reduce RPM at a given speed, but generally both sprockets are changed in size so the chain length is the same.

HOWEVER -

You have to be familiar with the bike's powerband before messing around with sprockets; 15-41 to 19-37 is a BIG change as the gearing is much "longer", sacrificing immediate pickup for faster and more economical cruising.

I suspect some bikes like the Pulsar which have "engines that feel like dying" above 90, will benefit most from sprocket swaps. Their engines have enough torque to deal with the longer gearing.

For a 2 stroker, the optimal powerband is always somewhere around 5-7k RPM so whatever the sprockets just ride in that range (may be different due to racing valves, endcan design, etc) and with the highway sprockets 2 strokes really fly as they have the horsepower and revs to run.

Hit 160kph with pillion in Malaysia once, on the tweaked sprockets. Later I switched to 17-39 for "dual purpose" city acceleration and top speed capped at 130, as the bike became older.

Average 125Z FC is 25km/l, mine is 37km/l. That's how much difference the reduction of 1500rpm makes.

Quite frankly, 300km before reserve is an embarrassment for s4, mite as well ride a cbr400. Unless u on vtec all e time lah. Go and do full servicing for ur bike la. U juz change engine oil and filter onli how to see improvement dot dot dot
