Considering buying new bike

Hi all. I'm getting sponsored 2B license by my company (not doing delivery), so I'm considering getting a bike for casual transport.

 

It's now a toss-up between the following:

- getting a 10+ years old wave for 5k with 7.5 years COE left

- getting a brand new wave or street bike (looking at one of the Honda CBR bikes)

- getting a 4 years old 200cc KTM Duke from a colleague/friend with 6 years left (price still discussing; market price is close to 10k)

 

I was on the fence about getting a bike because it was either the very old wave or having to deal with the very inflated COE. The third choice seems perfect.

 

I'm concerned about the fuel consumption, cost of servicing and availability of parts. I'm leaning more towards a street bike than my original choice of Wave because I'd like to ATGATT, and it'll look less weird on a bike like the Duke.

 

Any advice guys?

Personally, I never bother how I look when I'm in gear on any bike. Saving skin is far more important than saving face.

Hehe actually that's not really my worry also. Just more worried about the maintenance and fuel cost of the Duke. I'll almost definitely renew the COE on the Duke, given that it's so young, so recurring costs are a very big concern for me.

If purely for tranaportation, the best choice is wave. But if u want some fun in riding then get the cheapest 2B bike to Tong till u get 2A or cl 2. Many choices of bikes especially class 2

Thanks for the reply! Suspected the top bike for simple commuting would be Wave. Another option would be to top up about 2k more and get a new Wave.

 

I actually don't see myself going for 2A or 2. Only reason I'm getting 2B is cause it's sponsored haha

 

After even more calculations I decided the fuel consumption isn't really an issue. It's no cub, so it'll be more expensive per month, but with insurance and everything, it comes up to only a 10% increase in my projected monthly expenditure. Now just concerned about the availability of parts and the cost of maintenance. Anyone with more input on these?

Your quick conclusion actually reminds me of the answer i given to the Instructor in BTL who ask me if i will do lane spitting when i got my 2B.

I look at his eye and answer," I actually don't see myself doing that".

I also prefer you to go with the third choice because KTM 200 Duke is the only 200cc naked bike with real racing genes. Last month my brother had bought his new bike KTM 200 Duke which was shipped by We Will Transport It services. He said that 200cc KTM Duke had a high-tech component, such as the ultra-compact, water-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine developing 19 kW (26 HP), and with much more standard features. The Duke is unbeatable with its sensational power-to-weight ratio coming from an ultra low dry weight of 129.5 kg. So go for the third option.

I got my bike 2 months back. Ended up getting a first-hand Honda CB190R. I decided against cubs because of the crosswind (and again, ATGATT), and decided against my colleague's Duke because somehow, within 4 years, the odometer has reset.

Just got my 2B license recently. I would like to try out riding on Singapore roads for a bit before fully committing to own a bike.

 

What is cheaper and easier? Renting for a month? Buying a used motorcycle and selling it a month later? Buying a motorcycle that is near the end of it's COE?

 

Any advice? Thanks

Not very familiar with the different alternatives, but I just wanna point out that you may consider increasing the timeframe to more than a month.

 

A bike is a big boy's toy, and the learning curve (I feel) is correspondingly steeper. 2 months in I'm pretty comfortable at speed, but I'm still learning new things every now and then, especially on bike handling at low speeds.

I'm agree with AnthonyClark, buying a used motorcycle and selling it a month later gives you a remarkable advantage not only in vehicle changes. You can increase your credit score (with this you could start) and then buy a new one that does not bring so many problems. I hope you help them

Why not rent a motorcycle, take it out for a spin and see what you like?
