the monthly cost should kept as low as possible, maybe say "$8-$10?" Cause there's a tracking device that some company is providing, it cost $2xx.00,lifetime until you dun wan the re-sell the product and it's transferable.. Of cuz, that company will not earn much unless the first person sell the product w/o transfering the ownership of the tracking thingy...

Kindly read thru at least the intro section first before decide to post any comments.... thanks...

yeah.. for $600 +MONTHLY subn is ex man... unless device rental or etc.. or free monthly subn for 3 years, device $600 = $600/36months= $16.67/30 days= 50 cents per day is alright.. Pay 50 cents a day to secure your bike.. BUT..this is not the case man.. Or installment plan of $20/month for 3 years also ok.. $20x12 months= $240x3 years= $720 also alright cause it's installment rather den you on shoot fork out $600 excluding monthly subn... correct?

Well, let's break it down into how I think this service works, before we understand why we should (or should not) pay for this kind of service:

Scenario:

- Bike owner installs the bike alarm gadget equipped with GPS transceiver

- Owner pays monthly fees to some sort of a 24/7 "control center" as a service for them to track down the bike if it gets stolen.

- Bike gets stolen and ridden off to (oh, say...) somewhere in Penang

- Owner reports to the "control center" team of his loss, the team uses their sophisticated radio-mapping tools and with a few clicks of their computer, activates the GPS satellites high up in the sky and it then proceeds to "track down" where the bike is.

- There is no charge nor fee in using GPS satellites and its associated radio airwaves

- The stolen bike's onboard GPS gadget picks up the signal, sends its signal back to the GPS satellites and finally, the location of the bike gets calculated, figured out, and sent back to the control center's computer systems.

- Armed with the information on where the bike is, the control center team either informs the user, may also assist in calling the cops, and/or uses this information to continue tracking the bike's movement in the bike-owner's absence.

- Bike gets retrieved back.

Looking at the abovementioned scenario on the comprehensive protection and tracking system, it would make sense that if there's a middleman -- such as the "control center" portrayed above -- that's assisting their monthly-subscription-paying customers in taking care of their bike, that we should pay for this service.

However, if there's no middleman -- for instance, the bike alarm comes with a PC software that we can use ourselves and that it utilizes the GPS satellites to track down your bike -- we should be paying little per-month, if not nada, entirely.

Yeah, I know I'm begging transparency here, but wouldn't it be good if we know what we're paying for and where our money goes to (its usefulness)?

paying for monthly is understandable as they need to maintain the server with the relavent program.

believe that even google earth need to pay for subscription unless its for private use.

but its a bit too high for this case...

a friend in hk told me about a device that comes in a black box that accepts a sim card

you can place it somewhere hidden.

if your bike gets stolen, all you need to do is dial a sim card no. that you have put into the box and it will auto reply with a gps co-ordinates.

better still right? no need to pay for any service.

a few things to note though.

box is about 2 candy bar phone in size, where to hide something this big?

another issue, if the bike is hidden underground, the gps will not give out a co-ordinate.

i believe this device is about $250.

worth a try if it works.

call your no. straight away for a co-ordinate, track it using google earth.

no need to pay and rely on a 3rd party.

Most people go through life following the crowd.

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.
