I personally think it all boils down to PREFERENCE and not skills level

Who says u don't need as much concentration when driving AUTO vehicles?

For those who are used to driving manuals, I suppose that u would say it comes as a NATURAL feeling when u HAVE/NEED to change gear, almost like subsciously u will KNOW when to do it.

I drive a manual myself. But yet, i find driving Auto equally challenging. Up till today, i have not really grasp the concept of handling an Auto. How u know how much accelerator to release/step?

At least for manual, u can still play with the clutch. Better control.

If u wanna say LAZY, then u shouldn't DRIVE at all. COZ driving isn't a passive skill at all!

AND one thing i don't understand, why do some pple stereotype that GALS drive AUTOs, GUYS drive MANUALS??

Ain't we supposed to be talking about equality of the sexes now?

Drove manual and auto before and i do found Auto is really easier and more relax when driving. And that is why Most singaporean tend to sway to the auto gear side. But also this created lazyness.

Remember my last accident was cause by autogear car also. the other party was so relax that he can read newspaper and make a turn into filter lane to SLE. I was at a stop to let a BIG speeding Lorry pass. then suddenly felt a thump. Haiz then the instructor next to me say Kanna Knock liaoz. SIANZ

you cannot sterotype the lazy from the hardworking can you? and it's not a matter of who can drive well should drive a manual car, and those who insist that auto car is still acceptable don't know how to drive a car ..it all boils down to the individual preference..

And that is why it shows that you can't DRIVE a car like the way it should be driven if you still can't get what I was saying!

You don't have FULL CONTROL and FEEL in an AUTO car ! And you can't get what I'm saying again then you probably haven't reach the stage to understand this yet! Maybe many more years of driving manual and more years of learning the fine art of car control then come back to this topic again, lah! :D

There was an accident yesterday at Clementi....involving a Volvo and (I think) a Charade......not sure whether both cars were involved in the same accident or two separate accidents in the same area...... both cars driven by women..... does that say anything??? Not being a MCP here.... just the facts please...... :p

Most girls I know hate manual trannies.

It can be generalized that girls don't like to be reminded of the technicalities of how the engine transmits power to the wheels, hence they prefer an auto tranny where they can just stick it in 'D' then press the accelerator to move and press the brake to stop.

Before you jump and scream "MCP!", let me say that it's the same for guys when it comes to skincare - guys in general couldn't give a rat's @ss about vitamin e, jojoba and whatnot to help clean the pores better for a finer, more radiant skin. They'd rather grab the soap, jump in the shower and jump back out 5 minutes later.

Back to cars.

I guess people who prefer to have complete control of the car will prefer a manual. Personally, I don't find anything exhilarating about driving in the city traffic - want fine control for what when you're crawling from one traffic light to another most of the time? So I'd rather relinquish that control for the convenience of an auto tranny.

For me, a car is to get the family from A to B in comfort and safety. Want fine control, performance & fun, get a damn sportsbike.. unless you're willing to fork out 10 times more money to get a sportscar that gives a similar performance.

Not necessarily. I have taken advanced driving courses in Malaysia and Australia. I know how to do doughnuts, handbrake turns, heel-toeing to setup a car for under/oversteer...

I've owned a an STI, EVO 4 and Skyline GTR in the 6 years that I was living in OZ and go to the track almost every week. So i have had some experience in that area as well.

I think i can handle a car better than most people who prefer to drive a manual car.

But I prefer to drive an auto car becos I have different priorities in life. That's all.

No offense but I think it's quite inappropriate to make statements like that.

i agree with you.. :thumb: i have the habit of holding my girl's hand while driving whenever i can, it got to me that priorities do change as i grow(my belly) lol ... and yes.. auto cars might sound wussy, but i always look at them 1st cos it's nearest to the car i wish to own 1 day... the M3 o_O

no offense to tuscani owners but... i'll put my money to integra anytime! ;p

You got it RIGHT ON, buddy. I let my girl read your post and she agrees totally! And it's also true that I usually don't give a crap about which facial wash I use as long as it cleans the oil off. But after months of nagging from my girl, I start to be a little more conscious about skincare. Similarly, after being with a motorhead like me for years, she is starting to get interested.

Anyway I'd put my money into an Integra, too. Not too expensive for good looks, Honda reliability and reasonable performance. Comes in Sportronic as well. For all-out performance, I will stick to my two-wheeler.

what would you guys choose if it was a Lancer. auto or manual?

lets say the car fitted with normal body kits, sport rims, and medium profile tyres. but no decals stickers whatsoever, just plain. just looks sporty.

do you guys think its overkill for auto gear? or if manual is it a wannabe who can't afford a real sports machine? its a double aged sword. just askin for opinions.

so is auto gear ok for a car that looks sporty?

if its an altis or getz or any normal sedan, i'd definately go for auto.

oh, and yes, dun compare posh, F1 race cars, Airtrek turbo etc etc... these car are semi auto/auto/steptronic/triptronic whatever etc... just askin about a lancer.

just akin for opinions. dun own any car yet... would love a sporty outlook, and dun mind a manual or auto. both can drive. but was thinking spend so much for a car, of cos must be comfortable. yet i duno much about auto cars, drive mostly manual cars... haha

Lancer? If its EVO 7/8/9, then better take manual, if not, it won't be able to show its prowess... norm lancer, auto/manual no one cares, its one's preference...

Why not auto for sporty cars? BMW and Lexus mostly are auto, even for the sporty series...

personal preference lah...

if you like to let normal s'pore car smell exhaust...go for a a manual car...

if you think that driving is already stressful..why would you like to stress yourself further by driving a manual car? go for an auto car lor...

as for myself...im ok with both...

but i prefer the manual cars for performance...if i can afford it..it will be a skyline GTR34 or a evo 6.5

if not..then it would be an auto car for me...

If u r getting a lancer, My advise is dun get an Auto lancer CVT.

Frens who took auto for lancer complained for high FC & was told the auto gear box isnt lasting.

Pros:

Manual car are cheaper.

Gear of ur choice (unlike auto it depend on how much u step on it)

More shiok when driving cos u can hear the engine calling u to change gear.

Save petrol

Cons:

U're tired of it when u driving for long period as in, troublesome to change gear.

Just woke up... can think of all these only

You bet. My auto Galant consumes more fuel than the guys who did a 5-speed manual transmission swap. For example, you want to full throttle but shift up at 3000rpm. That is no problem with a manual. Just step, shift, step shift, repeat. But it's very difficult with an auto. You need to floor the pedal and let go and floor it again at 3000rpm, every gear. The TCU sometimes can be stupid and shift down also. Very frustrating when I want to get off the traffic light quickly but yet don't want to waste too much fuel doing it. So sometimes I am just lazy and step until it gets up to speed and let go and step gently again.

But I agree, I like to hold my girl's hand when I drive, esp in cold weather.
