I am tempted to buy Vstorm 650. However, my friend commented that the main frame of V storm is hollow. If the bike encounter accident, the frame will crack more easily than other bike and not possible to repair thereafter. It has to scrap eventually. I wonder how true it is? Can anyone help to advice please??

advice

go read the review from page 1 , if not go google the information....this v-strom is definately not for you.

Looking at the bullets flying towards you & your "friend", I guess you shouldn't ask this friend of yours for advice on bike stuff as he / she is giving you some very wrong advice.

Work within your budget for your next bike and happy shopping. :p

Just happen to see more vstroms on the road.

Was it khaitronic I saw on the opposite side of PIE at around 7am on Sat morning? Dark vstrom with Alu top box and wearing yellow jacket.

I was with my wife on our way to Air Papan for a short spin with a friend.

Later in the afternoon around 4pm on PIE, saw a yellow vee also with Alu top box. Rider in berms and with ponytail I think. Aerosmith? I was driving in a car.

thats me! lol!

this guy wont be happy shopping lah. cos he cant find a bike without hollow main frame. and when he finally find one, he cant afford.

he better shops for bike that the taya comes without air, then it will never puncture one.

Elliot,

Like khaitronic says, best to have a trusted mechanic to check out the bike.

Thanks for the input guys!

Guys, cut him some slack. We sound very intimidating haha.

thelai2002, you sound interested but no harm asking. Your question is valid for any bike you are planning to buy. Any major head on accident will surely render any bike to be totalled anyway. Scrapping the bike is better sometimes than trying to repair.

The mechanics of an accident vary from case to case. Very hard to determine if it is really a weak part or design flaw. If there really is, there would be aftermarket support for it. One case in particular is the R1100GS. Touretech manufactures hardparts to strenghten some known weakness in the footpeg mounting and telelever. Still I would say it is a good bike. I don't see hard parts being made for the vstrom. Don't talk about engine guards and protection plates coz all adventure bikes will have them to avoid costly damage in case of a spill or owners want to do some offroading with them.

Like what others have mentioned. All modern bikes now are made with hollow frames to save weight. Modern day engineering would have factored in strength in the design for the function of the bike. Don't worry too much. Go read some overseas vstrom forum and you'll know what are the common issues (all fixable). Even BMWs have issues and they still sell like hot cakes.

It's been a while since i last posted. But i found some issues recently when i send my bike for servicing.

After the servicing (standard oil change, filter, plugs, bla bla bla...), the bike have not been running smoothly. I used to clock 300-320 before hitting the blinking last bar, but recently only manage to clock 260-270. Bike have always been running at 17-18km/l now doing 15-16km/l. Idling not so smooth and bike tends to die off when idling. So i go through all the things i change and pin point to the plugs.

Quote this from VSRI : Which type of Spark Plugs does the V-Strom need?

DL1000 2 required.

OEM is NGK CR8EK or DENSO U24ETR. Which is a multi-ground 2 electrode plug.

The NGK iridium spark plug for the 1000 V-Strom is NGK CR8EIX.

DL650 (04-06) 2 required. (07 & up) 4 required.

OEM is NGK CR8E or DENSO U24ESR-N. Which is a traditional spark plug.

The NGK iridium spark plug for the 650 V-Strom is NGK CR8EIX.

Yes, the same iridium plug goes in both.

Note: Many owners including myself reported slightly better engine smoothness, throttle response at low rpm & mileage improvement by using the iridium plugs.

Found out that my DL1000K4 was fitted with DENSO U24ESR-N instead of NGK CR8EK or DENSO U24ETR. I've always used NGK CR8EK.

Do note that DL1000 plugs are the multi-ground 2 electrode plug instead of the tradional spark plug.

Anyone actually have checked what plugs are stuff into the throttle bodies. Will like to know how iridium plugs affect the performance. Please feedback. Thanks.

Should pay more attention to the plugs, cos the mechs who service my bike might have service ur bike too. The used plugs may determine whether ur bike is running/firing efficiently

Taking out the plugs by urself is fairly easy. Just need a bit of work. The front will be a bit of problem cos need to tilt the radiator. The back no need to take out the tank. No experience with twin spark model though.

I can't compare much with you guys since I'm riding the Wee. All I can say is I using NGK instead of OEM Denso and it improved the distance. Max I drag for my Wee is 470km before topping
