Anyone here use zumo 550.I think of getting one from US is there as tax fee to ship in.Is there any guide booklet on how to upload maps.Izzit easy to upload.

PM "blurdoggy", he owns one.

Yes, you still need to pay GST

Uploading of maps is easy, similar as transferring of file in a PC, just drag & drop into the "Garmin" folder in the GPS.

:)

GPS - Global Position System.

All GPS will work anywhere as long as it's on earth, and you can see the sky regardless the location of purchase.

The only advantage if you buy in the region is that sometimes the GPS come with maps installed of that region. By now, most of the GPS have the ability of add maps, so it's no big deal.

:)

I see, tks. THat's what I thought too, until I see different versions for US, Europe and Pacific on the Garmin website. And some of the units have this unlock code thingy.

And yes, sometiems shipping from the States is much cheaper.

This is my personal opinion.

There are some features on the Zumo550 that will not be able to make use if use outside USA, such as the XM Navtraffic. Then there are some features which you need to add even more money to use it, such as the Bluetooth, and without it, the "Speaks street names" feature is also quite hopeless on a bike.

So for SGD300 less, at about SGD800, the Zumo450 seems like a better choice.

The Zumo is impressive. My fren uses it in his car, can patch with mobile using bluetooth, and use it as a handsfree with speaker!

On my end, used Sanyo rechargeable batt on my HCx, and left it on from 9 a.m. until 9.00 p.m., all day, bright backlight. Cool.

Cheers

How much maps can I download into a 2 GB memory card? Say I would like to put maps of thailand and beyond into the unit, do I need to free up space by deleting the Malaysian and local maps more frequently used?

Seriously deciding to get a unit versus good old map reading.

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

Just to provide you a feel :

Singapore + West Malaysia = 11Mb

Australia = 39Mb

Luzon = 6Mb

Different maps of the same country can be of different sizes depending on the level of details, and whether it's routable..etc.

2Gb memory will definitely go a long long way.

POI = Goodies!!!

Waypoints = Yellow Brick road to Goodies!!!

Auto-routing = Sexy voice (or not) guiding you on the yellow brick road :-P

Bro can anyone enlighten me abt all the gps terms like POI:point of interest,Way of point,auto-routing wat is all this means to be.

POI - self explanatory. Such as Shopping Centres, Police Stations, Petrol stations, Hotels, eateries etc. Every map will come with these POIs, and you can add you own, like your home, your gf home, your ex-gf home by using add-on programmes like POI Loaders.

Waypoints - These are your intermediate destinations between your start point,and your end point. With only a start point (or your existing position), and an end point, the GPS will recommend a route but it may not be what you want. Having waypoints, will force the GPS to create a route to your liking. For trip planning, waypoints should coincide with petrol stops/breaks.

Auto-routing basically means that the GPS is able to calculate a route from your current location to a destination. Please note that there is routable maps, and non-routable maps. On certain GPS, using a non-routable map means it has no auto-routing feature.

If you will be looking at the unit while riding, may want to consider Garmin Quest or 60Csx at that price range.

To me if you are intending to mount it on and actually use it as a map while riding, get the bigger sets (Zumo, Nuvi) rather than the handheld (60Cx, etrax series etc) which is really hard to read while on the move at speed.

Another consideration is also whether you will use in a car as well.

Another consideration is that if you are a PDA user, then consider using it as a GPS, with Mapking software.

Cheers
