gpx files are created by the gps and Mapsource files are gdb.

If it's true that Oregon can only work fully with Basemap, and it will be the only one in the Garmin family to do so, then Oregon is doomed to fail.

Since you are familiar and happy with the 60csx, perhaps the 62csx will appeal to you.

Here is where I read abt the oregon and mapsource etc etc issue.

Yup saw the 62, looks good but the external power source is stupid lor, it uses mini USB head!! The 60 uses this big 4 pin head which still give good enough weather resistance when riding in the rain as long as your unit is facing up or at least at an angle. But with USB, how much weather resistance is there? Sigh... feel that Garmin is not doing a good job with their R&D dept.

Fishtan - Garmin 60Csx rocks dont you agree? Had it for 3 yrs now & been to many of my tours and adventures be it by motorbike or bicycle. Till today it still runs. My first 60csx dropped on the NSH highway due to my negligence & got my current one almost immediately. My only complain was it auto shut down by itself during navigation sometimes. Other than that it works fine. Can anyone elaborate on this? And the Colorado was one of my fav too in fact I wanted to get it but it was already discontinued. Any one can answer this? Colorado was newer model than 60csx but discontinued unlike 60csx is still on the shelves.

When this occurs, was the GPS powered by it's own battery or on external power supply ? Have you updated it's software & firmware through the garmin webupdater ?

The Colorado was intended to be the replacement model for the 60CSx however it died prematurely for a range of reasons. Firstly 60CSx was very reliable and popular, it was also the preferred gps for the mapping community, even till now. Secondly it was too expensive, and partly Garmin was to blame for releasing a model without thorough testing its software robustness. It's a matter of time the 60CSx will be discontinued now that the 62CSx has been launched.

Yup 60CSx rocks my socks off!! And as Demon has pointed out, very soon it will be dis-continue cos 62 is out. And like I said the power socket using USB is really not clever.

I never have it auto shut down on my thou, maybe cos whenever I ride, i use the power cable from bike battery and only when I off my engine then the unit switch to AA batteries. So my last Thai 6 days trip I literally use only 1 set of AA batteries for the entire trip.

Anyone know does the new 62CSx uses Mapsource or Base Camp? Please let it be map source.

The 4 pin power plug used on the 60CSx is definitely 100% waterproof but power via the usb is not that bad if the GPS is positioned correctly like behind a wind shield. I am using the nuvi550 without any issues with the usb.

Just guessing, but I am quite sure that if all the Garmin models ie. ETrex, GPSMAP, Nuvi, Zumo, use Mapsource, and the 62CSx is no exception.

Thanks Demon for the reply.

This occurs when it is using the AA batteries. So far I have never used other power source but only the AA batteries. Yup I did update to the latest one but still the same. Anyway I tried this method dunno whether it really works but so far so good. If the unit turns off by itself during navigation I normally take out the batteries for just a few seconds & then put back. The problem went away.

As for the Colorado yes it's true it is expensive on the other hand but I didnt get to read the reviews though regarding the software issues. The 60CSX was indeed very popular & reliable I never regretted buying it till today.

Funny I had same issues with both my 60CSX but anyway I find that its a small problem & not to be an issue at all

The problem is in your batteries.

This problem is very common especially when using rechargeable batteries. They can never be fully charged even when new, and their endurance diminishes with every charge cycle. From experience, it is better to use disposal batteries like Duracell.

That confirms it is your batteries

My batteries are the usual Energizer alkaline AA. Hence I probably think the issue might be the battery came a bit loose due to the vibration during riding.

Hi all again,

I am planning to drive my family for 1 day eat eat see see trip this Fri. So driving and not riding but still 60CSx will be my weapon of chose rather than the nuvi 205 :) I'm too use to 60, but my wife can only handle the 205.

Anyway I meant to ask any recommendation of where and what to eat along the way? The trip would be 2nd link and end up in malacca. Probably have satay celup in Malacca before hitting NSHW to head home. I heard abt Kulai Nasi Lemak, anyone have the address or better still the coordinates or the gdb file? hee hee...

I intend to drive slow up, possibly not even using NSHW to do more sight see... so any good food along the way to recommend is highly appreciate. Thanks

Hi all again,

Just one POI, no need in gdb file. Just plonk this coordinate into your gps or Mapsource.

N1 40 03.8 E103 34 55.3

Do note that along HWY 1 Spg Renggam-Kulai, you cannot turn right into Jln Saga to the nasi lemak place. You have to continue driving and do a U-turn ahead. This place is only open at night, not sure exactly what time they open, but after 9pm will be safe.

Anybody tried mounting their mobile phones that has GPS to their bikes?

I would think poor battery life, not rugged enough, not waterproof are some problems.

But I would give it a try on our local roads first.

Anyway, I just bought a Nokia phone and it comes with a car mount. I wonder if it is feasible to mount it to my bike's dashboard or would getting a proper bike mount be a better idea?

Tried using my Iphone 3G previously mounted on the logic case (waterproof). It did work with a working sim card in it.. After i switch over to the Iphone 4. Left my old sim card (deactivated) in the old 3G. Tried it again on a trip to malaysia and it cant seems to log on any location..

Another thing to note is that the Iphone screen cannot be activated if you are wearing gloves during ur ride..

yes, i've bought quite a few RAM stuffs from JK but his prices are rather high; have already spent >$200 over the years.

as a consumer, its natural to look for alternative sources... even if its PI
