The Nuvi 500 is only S$340 from JK Commercial? That's a good price. Did you have to bargain? The price listed on their website is $499, see the link below. Really very tempting if it is S$340 :)

http://jkcommercial.com.sg/index-1.html

By the way, does JK offer service to help connect GPS to power source of bike? Anyone has any experience? I'm really hopeless at electrical stuff...

i think package and price has been changed.

when i got it.. 499$ package includes

-bike charger (50 S$)

-ram mount set (120 S$)

so minus 170 $ from 499 package left GPS nuvi 500 for only 329$.

Hi,

I'd download the map to the SD card & insert it to my 62S yet don't work.

Please advise wat shld I do

Did you create a sub directory (folder) name GARMIN ie. X:\garmin

Once you have downloaded the map file named GMAPSUPP.IMG, drop it into that folder.

Hi Costar,

I paid $460 inc GST for it. Should be a very reasonable price, other shop quoted me 600 - 700.

I also bought a SE asia city navigation map, as I was travelling alone to thailand.

Very useful, can roam around the city without worrying of getting lost.

As for mounting to the bike, I'm not quite sure. I think it don't fits my bike.

Probably you can ask Demon for advise

here's another one for the GPS guru.

I have tried various other makes of maps on the garmin.

they load and run fine in browsing mode but once it starts navigating, the actual path driven on the road does not reflect what is shown on the gps.

usually if u are heading straight on a curvy road, it appears to be a straight line on the gps.

guru, pls enlighten, tks :)

usually it is just like what mordecai1968 has mentioned, it is not a routable map. One obvious sign the map is not routable is that the position tends to drift ie, not "lock on road". Another way is to check it's routing function using Mapsource.

Other possibility is that there was error during updating. The map is make up many different tiles, if there is an error in one tile during updating, and when the tiles are compiled, routing to that affected tile will not be possible but routing in other tiles will not be affected.

Another possibility is that map was converted to garmin format, and in the process, some properties such as routing are lost during compiling.

so its actually a combination of problems.

i have the situation where its working fine on certain roads and not on others

and on other maps, it draws a straight line from current location to destination.

got a better "picture" now guys, i know what maps to skip next time, tks!

guys,

i am a newbie to GPS and I hope to get some advise on the 60csx.

Considering this "old" unit for its price point, AA batteries, small size, and ruggedness.

Intended use, adventure touring in Msia, and thai (would like to go further north if I can)

Queries:

- Can this unit do search via street names?

- Is it responsive for motorbiking or does it lag behind? ( I understand i have to change it to drive mode for it to be more responsive)

- Is the screen too small to see?

ANy other advise or feedback on this unit is greatly appreciated.

Other unit that I may consider is the Nuvi500 but it has just crossed my price point.

Singapore, no problem but you may face some problems with malaysia street name.

drive mode, walking mode or depache mode all the same because the gps will update the position at fixed interval. If you ride at 200kph, then obviously you will have less time to react when the gps prompt you to turn.

- Is the screen too small to see?

The 60CSx has a 2.6" screen (measured diagonally) whereas the Nuvi550 has a 3.5" screen however in terms of viewing the distance ahead, you see slightly more with the 60csx because the screen height is 2.2cm vs the Nuvi550 which is only 2.1cm. Of course on the nuvi550 you will see more details on the sides.

If you intend to use it more on a motorbike, my suggestion is to start with the Nuvi550

60CSX

IT may be old but it is still Rugged its' strong point is that it's handheld and can go anywhere as long as there is battery available

limitation is when you use it mounted the screen will be a bit too small for you to see details , so you have to relie on the aero and distance indicator for guidance.

Nuvi 500 is meant to be vehicular mounted. screen is large enough to see certain details.

so dismounted role is not optimal.

so both have it's limitation and advantages, it all depends what you use it for.

thank you for the prompt replies!

Is there any difference between the Nuvi 550 and 500? I did a comparison on the garmin site and both appears the same (maybe I miss a point or 2???).

I really like the ruggedness of 60csx esp the use of AA size batteries, but the Nuvi 500 is spec more towards vehicular usage.

I know that 60csx can do 1sec interval tracking but unsure of the Nuvi 500/550. Any comments here?

Price wise, 60csx is US$200 while Nuvi 500/550 is US$260.

Haiz.... decisions decisions....mmmm....maybe Nuvi500/550 is the way to go as its a vehicular unit as pointed out by 1st poster.

OH! It also seems that Kmax is using Nuvi500 which kinda says alot abt the usefulness of the unit for touring usage. It has the Kmax stamp of approval???? hahahaha....

the track is abt the same but in the malfree site there seems to have some patch to increase the interval for the nuvi....for me it does not make a diff....

the diff between 500 n 550 by the base map

guys,

thk u for ur valuable advise and feedbacks.

I have kinda of decided to get the 60csx due to its price point. I am aware of its limitations, and hence would start saving for a zumo660 (or something like it as more models appear by the time i have at least 1k for it)

Can I get a final piece of advise?

- To get the 60csx functional, I would have to download free Mapsource and free maps of Singapore , Msia and THailand from MFM to my computer. Oh and also to get the garmin updater so that my 60csx have the latest firmwear.

- Aft the downloads , I have to get it uploaded into the 60csx from my computer.

- and the final step is to plan out my routes on my comp and start hiting the roads!! yeeeeehaaaaaaaaaa...... (lets hope that it will go as plan???)

Are the above steps correct to get the 60csx functional?

I am also thinking of getting a powerlet installed on my bike so that i can use the 60csx with a powerlet adapter while on the move. This will allow me to conserve battery power and also to charge my rechargeable batts.
