my rear brake always squeeke quite loud during morning. after using a while, the sound will be gone. what could be the problem?

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

it can be many things.

Your brake pad is thinning out.

Your disc is rusty.

There's a mouse trapped in your disc.

You did not mention if its disc or drum brake either?

In the morning, jack up your rear (not your own, your bike I meant), turn the wheel and press the rear lever.

Identify how that sound happens.

Nothing beats being Inspector Gadget early in the morning and detecting the puzzle. ;)

mine has the same problem too, now a month after i recently changed my rear drum brake.

it creates a moaning cat sound like that when i gently press over the brake pad, but squeaking sound when braking normally.

drum brake. yes, after it gets wet, will also squeeke. so is brake dust? how to clean? do i have to disassemble the whole parts out?

i heard my front disc being squeaky when i was going down the slope when i pillion on my SP.

can it be due to the fact im going down slope with a pillion?

or the brake pad finish alr? =/

because usually i dun hear the squeaking noise on normal rides.

Brake squeals can be caused by either brake dust accumulation or worn out brake pads till there is metal to metal contact.

Washing and spraying of water in the brake caliper area can only take out so much of the brake dust. It is the dust that is embedded in the brake pad surface itself that is difficult to wash out and its the one that still contribute to the squeal.

Only way out is... change the brake pads to a higher quality type or take the brake pads out and wire brush them or sandpaper lightly.

Brake pads that have been in use for a long time tend to look 'shiny' and smooth. The word they use is 'glazed'. Glazing can be caused by constant light pressure on the brake pads. Some people unknowingly put their foot on the brake pedal and are actually applying abit of brake pressure.... this is called 'riding the brakes'.

Brake pad glazing will result in noise and ineffective braking.

Yo mr Raptor, ive read in one of da webby states that to break in the brakepads, i need to apply little pressure on da brakes intermittently before i can slam my brakes on the new pads. my brakes having this squealing sound and it really piss me off coz people tink bike so ex buy cheap brakepads. hahaha i juz swap to carbon lorraine, stopping power is gd but only the sound. is my pads glazed?

quoted from a webby:

High-pitched brake squeal is caused by a high-frequency vibration between the pad and the rotor. Brake noise is not caused solely by the brake pad. The brake rotor diameter, and stiffness of the disc are also factors in the offending noise. Metallic-Carbon pads (as opposed to organic (asbestos) pads) typically produce more inherent noise than the older organic pads. Different brake pad manufacturers use different and varying amounts of substances in their pads: Iron, Copper, Zinc, Other Alloys, Lead, Carbon, Ceramic compounds, Kevlar, and numerous other fillers. This variation in pad composition, geometric design of the pad, and the stiffness (density) of the pad material itself can also contribute to the noise. Lastly, all of these factors can be affected by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Now, how do I fix it?

#1: Make sure you have straight and true surfaces on your rotors and pads. Turn, or replace rotors as necessary- do the same with the pads.

#2: Inspect calipers, caliper sliders, and all other mounting sufaces and metal-to-metal contact areas. (This includes the rotor to hub mounting surface which commonly becomes contaminated by rust and other debris!) Lubricate all metal-to-metal contact areas with moly grease or lube. Inspect complete system and make sure that rotors and pads are lining up 'true' when brakes are being applied.

#3: Apply anti-squeal moly lube or similar to backing plate of the pads - or use an anti-squeal shim between the pad and the piston contact areas. This will change (dampen) the frequency of the vibration and will help reduce the noise.

#4: Chamfering of the leading and trailing edge of the pads will also help to reduce noise levels.

#5: Inspect related suspension components to make sure worn components are not placing undue stresses on the braking system, calipers, and pads.

I doubt if the pads are glazed. Did sound come about after some time or was it immediate following the brake pad change?

Mebbe you migh want to take out the brake pads and sandpaper them and perhaps chamfer the edges like what the website recommended.

By the way.. I am using a Brembo 4 pot caliper and Ferodo brake pads and I too get a squeal when coming to a slow stop at the traffic lights. The braking power is most awesome so I don't give a crap about the squeal. I take it that I cannot have the best of both worlds so I will live with it.

I scared to change to brake pads with no squeal in case I get no braking power too.

means you take out the pads and wash? or just apply onto the brakes itself without taking out?

drum brakes sand and wash both the pads and the housing.. car shop always do that to drums brakes when servicing.. for squeeks, check if your brake pads are worn unevenly.. one side worn more than the other side of the pad..
