Hi all, I am a extremely newbie here, will attend the TP test in Feb.

Prefer buying 2nd hand bike for starting, the "used bike sale" section is great, but buying from private owner is kind of complicated and troublesome for the newbie just like me.

Please advise is there any motorcyle store selling various used bike at resonable price.

All reply are greatly appreicated, bow....

buying from private owner is not neccsarily very troublesome.. i bought both my bike from private owner and sold one to other guy as well. U juz gotta know what sort of bike ur looking for and the market price of similar bike den you will agar know the price you should pay.

For the buying part.. once both seller and buyer decided on the price. Just gotta decide on a date to do the transfer at LTA. Buyer will have to get his insurance done so that the effective date is on the date of transfer. And once the transfer is done and you have paid, ur good to go

the Big 3 has traditionally been Looi's, Mah motor and ASphoon. Last one i not sure, but Looi's and Mah has always gave the best prices, up to about 1k lower than what small time shops can offer you. I scouted over 20 super4s before i eventually bought one at Looi's some time back.

For 2B bikes u can get good deals from private sellers in urgent need to sell, or those kan chiong spiders trying to get quick cash when they upgrade. Its not that troublesome if you can afford the time to view an additional bike or two that fits ur budget. Rather, trying to sell a second hand bike is very troublesome for the owner, because he has to handle many prospective buyers and get flown on a lot of kites :deal:

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

Yeap, i got my bike thru this forum just 2 days after passing my TP. Already had in mind what type i wanted, and read up on the procedures (Purchase Insurance, transfer procedures) while browsing the "used bikes" section.

I got everything settled on a saturday, very good considering LTA opnes till noon on saturdays, haha.

And for the record, i ended up with a completely different bike that i had in mind but no complaints, actually grew quite fond of it.

what sort of bikes you looking for?

buy from private seller nt troublesome at all, and its faster if you do it right.

basically you just need to go down to ntuc, take que number get your insurance. then make a trip with the seller to lta. thats all.

go garage sales, see any bike you like. before u make a trip down to test ride, check the seller past posts. see what he post in the past month, past week, see there is any mention of bike problems etc. I will probably be more cautious at test riding where the owner account are jan 09 registered with 10 post counts, where 9 of them are in his/her own sales thread

when test ride bike that time, easiest way to check if the bike is properly maintained is by looking at the chain (imo). good owners should had kept their chain well clean sparkling, and well oiled. average to bad owners probably wont get a rat arse to their chain. either dried, rusty (yes) or like mine , the chain basically lubed until thick thick hahaaa

seriously.. most people recommend from Owner because it's cheaper and safer... BUT Mutual trust is required lah... Cause bike shop is more expensive by estimated $500 but provide 1-3 months warranty... Owner dun haf...

Kindly read thru at least the intro section first before decide to post any comments.... thanks...

I would suggest you getting from a reputable bike shop like the 2 mentioned by Pplater.

The best part for Looi's is that you can pay by GIRO, which I think is VERY convenient. One of my previous bike I bought from a smaller shop and I got to go back every month to pay in cash.

Very troublesome.

avoid those shops at bukit merah.

aiyah you beat me to it... there are alot of rides in Alexandra Village but most of the shops are butchers in disguise :cheeky:

I went to Looi's last saturday, it's quite huge with multi-stories, which almost looks like a automobile store.

It turned out that, even in this store, the 2nd hand 2B bike is realy rare, and say nothing of the variety to choose from.

Thank you all for the information of buying from private owner.
