Bro,

at 1.5K, if you have a fren who's knowlegeable in assembling PCs, you can get a good one below that. I used to do PCs and did one for a Staff Sergeant under me. Built him a high-end AMD AthlonXP with GeForce 4 Ti4200 and loads of RAM, printer, CDRW & CDROM drive and a 17-inch Phillips monitor (I recommend CRTs for gaming). Oh, and original WinXP Home. Normally I'm a "friendly" guy but for his case I recommended an original OEM. All within your budget.

Disadvantage: warranty covereage is a bit stiffy coz you can only send in the component that is spoilt.

Advantage: A PC customized to suit your needs, wants and budget. No having to pay for parts or PC feature that you dun need or want. Modifications or upgrade of PC is as easy as clicking your finger (if you have some understanding of PC hardware, that is).

Dell...........think twice.

Go sim lim or get a friend to assemble for you.1.5k is way enough for a good one.

DIY is for those who know............

buy those with onsite service for those who dont know PC well..

If budget is the main issue, I would strongly recommend going for Dell.

Get a Dell base system, then update the memory urself.....coz the memory Dell sells are exactly the same as those at SLS, but price wise, much more expensive.....

Doesn't it void the warranty?

Doesn't it void the warranty?

Errr...cannot remember the official statement or policy of Dell, but I doubt so, not for Dell.

For Compaq, yes, any foreign peripherals that is not from Compaq found in a Compaq machine will void the warranty. Read the clause in the limited warranty booklet, it's in there.

But frankly speaking, easy what, b4 calling for tech. support, and if u r sure they will need to come down to service it, juz take out the extras lor. So far, I have even sent in machines (laptops) with 3rd party peripherals (memory and bigger harddisk) and no problem at all with Dell.

u will need Good Graphic/Sound card ..

CPU and RAM

Not necessary the fastest processor available will give good results.

Good Graphics card + adequate Memory available is more important. Games always perform poorly if there is insufficient memory. Furthermore, nowadays, most of the graphics processing tasks are handled by the GPU, not heavily dependent on CPU anymore....so good graphics card wif a good GPU is important.

Yeah. In my experience for games its:

GPU (3D card)

RAM (loads if possible)

A medium-range to fast CPU is subject to types of games played.

For me, a hardcore games, I recommend myself sumting like the following:

AMD AthlonXP (Speed determined by price and budget)

Chaintech motherboard (think its called the Raptor or Apogee. Loved it coz the MB arrangement and wire placement made installation a total breeze. The MB actually supplied short rubber hose casings to organize your power and serial data cables in your system)

512MB RAM

ATI Radeon 9000 Pro or Nvidia GF4 Ti4200 with 128MB VRAM (prices are falling like flies)

Simple PS2 keyboard and USB mouse (why PS2? why waste a USB slot for sumting that the M/B still supplies? Also, keyboard technology hasn't changed that much unless you are digging into a wireless keyboard. For mouse, its gotta be an analog one. No digital stuff coz I trust analog when I'm fragging in CS)

SB Live Value (hahah! Can't go wrong with it. With enuff cash, maybe an Extigy)

Logitech Soundman Extrusion speakers (Fren got it dirt cheap at $99 but the sound quality is like 3X the money value)

There. Hope January's ERS allocation is enuff for me to build sumting hot...

ahahahhaha

Your budget seriously can buy a very good computer liao. I recommend Bliss computer (Sim Lim Sq, 4th floor, come out from lift turn left, pass the laptop shop, second shop from the right in front of you), look for Roger or Leo. Not the cheapest (compared to Costronics) but customer service definitely A++!

You can probably get a P4 2.4c, a 865PE motherboard with built in LAN and 5.1 audio, GF4 graphics, CDRW, 256MB RAM and possibly a 15" LCD.

And if you go the self-assembly route, please get a good casing with good power supply unit! I can't over-stress that! My first casing burnt 3 motherboards (all replaced for free, but had to make to trip to SLS) and when I changed to a better one, no more problems...

Power supply is one thing. Good casing means a good cooling system. You M/Bs burnt cos chances are, they're not receiving enuff heat exchange (a.k.a. not being cooled enuff) Its like the VTEC rectifier. It has to be cooled somehow. A good casing can provide multiple cooling fans.

For me, I dream of the ultimate cooling system: The Cryotech. Uses a compressor and liquid nitrogen system to aid CPU cooling. Costs abt USD$1K....

if i wanna use it for game and 2-D software wat are the things i need to improve on??? thanks

if the game is 3-d game, sure you need a good graphic card.

as to monitor, CRT is good for your eyes while LCD wins on weight and size. for game, the bigger, the better. 19" or 20" even 21". Buy good a keyboard and a mouse to protect your fingers.

if you do not know computer will, go to brand one for warranty and service. If you like DIY, go to sim lim square and buy parts and let a shop assemble for you (pay around $50 at most) or do it at your home. Any way, try to avoid the free assemble service, for you will get quite lots of stuff from this service provider with a higher price.

I thought these branded brands have stickers over the screw-hole. So once u need to open up the casing, u break the sticker and void the warranty.

smoking? bad sign.

usually its just the CPU, motherboard or PSU burnt. Ur rams, hdd, addon cards shd still be usable.

Get someone technically incline to test for you the parts.

HDD shd not have any compatibility issues if yours an IDE interface.
