Paid $65 for mine. Presuming that your one one hasn't melted or burned the plastic on the plug to the wiring look then its a 10 minute job to replace it yourself. Undo 2 bolts, unplug, plug new one into socket, replace 2 bolts. Done.

Get one from a Earlier model carbed R1 if you want to upgrade, they are a heavier duty unit with bigger heatsinks. It's not that the R1 generates or draws more electrical power its just that the reg/rec unit used is of a better quality. If you go this route then you will need to cut the plug from the wiring loom, fit spade connectors to the individual wires and slip them onto the pins in the R1 reg/rec socket and once firmly in place fill around the pins with heat resistent non-conductive silicon so that they don't come loose or get wet.

kalam and weiqiang have the same problem..

people told me its a symptom that its going to spoil soon, but i don't really know... cos i remember kalam or weiqiang told me that the new cdi they got oso have this problem...

but it dosent seem to cause them any problem beside that sticky stuff.

hi dude,

according to my mech, the yellowish sticky stuff leaking out of my cbr400's cdi was either

1. the silicone in the cdi melting due to the heat after the cdi is old enough for the silicone to degrade, which then leaks out...this is the silicone tt is supposed to prevent u from tampering with the cdi, it being injected ot the cdi at point of manufacture.

but with the leak my cdi continued to work long after it started leaking. of coz i got pissed with yellow 'juice' slowly dripping on the ground in strands after i parked...so i cleaned the external of the cdi, then used black tape to form another sealing layer over the cdi, esp parts tt have holes... it didn't leak anymore after tt.

or

2. someone tampered with the cdi before, either to remove restriction or increase power (wadeva...), then used poorer-grade superglue or silicone to reassemble the cdi. as before, the leak doesn't necessarily mean ur cdi is gonna die out, just tt it may b a major pain in the ass, esp if it leaks n stains ur paintwork, after u wash n wax ur bike...

or

3. non-OEM cdi which may have used poorer quality materials..in this case resulting in more heat? or easily melted silicone sealant...

yeah..my little bit from experiencing yellow goo leaks...

cheers!

thanx everyone for ur answers..

i guess i'll just black tape the thingy.. the only prob with it is dat its spoiling my paintwork cos it flings.. will get it of it soon.. haha.. :)

To gain something, there must be a sacrifice. This is the principle of equivalent trade

Yes it does work fine, as has been said you will need to cut your loom and crimp spade connectors onto the individual wires and then waterproof once connected. You neg the reg/rec from a 98-2001 carb model R1 as after that the socket is weird and has a lot more connectors.

You will probably need to redrill the mounting holes in the subframe as the ones on the R1 reg are further apart than stock.

On my bike yes I have the reg/rec with fins which I believe is the S4 one and it works fine. Not sure where it came from my mechanic sourced it for me, installed around 6 months ago and still working perfectly.

The R1 one is a good upgrade IF you are going to keep the bike for long term and IF you want to spend the extra time and money. There is no increase in performance or anything it will just last longer.

With you problem with the signals not working 55/65w bulbs will generally burn out the wiring in the light switch block on the handle bars which could be causing your problem so you could try getting that rewired for a few bucks first and changing to 35/65w bulbs which are the standard fitment.

For brake discs find a set of pre-98 CBR600F3 brake discs on ebay US and get them. Mine cost me ~$65 for a set delivered to my door in mint condition and are on my bike now.

set of 3?

2 fronts + 1 rear?

Some people measure their adventures in miles or days. I prefer "lamp posts".

Front discs. Not sure whether the rear disc from that model 600 is compatible or not. Rear discs are cheap enough anyway, would never both replacing mine as don't us the rear brake except when stopped at lights.
