I have been soughting ways to mount cameras, there's a lot of ideas on youtube - some even mount into the helmet, into, not on. i.e. resting directly infront of their nose! :faint:

General ways:

1) mount on helmet - Can move to look at danger/ interesting things, but when u check blindspot, the results will be like watching blair witch - headache. Wun forget to remove.

2) mount on bike - Stable video, but cannot move to look at interesting things. DUN forget to remove! (ouch!) [Hey, i think if mount on handlebar can move wor! at least in the direction u r going towards, unless u countersteering!]

3) Lutein's way - mount on clothes!

***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****

***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****

Types of cameras to use:

Cheapest: ur camera phone - quality varies! perhaps the higher end models with flash and 5MP onwards may be able to capture somewhat good quality. Size also matters.

Best quality: Good camera/ portable video camera.

Actually sis, mounting on clothes kinda makes it impossible to move when u want it to. And when u dun want it to move, it does (fidgety video)! :faint: the good side of it is CONFIRM wun forget to take home!

***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****

***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****

PS: if intend to use camera/ camera phone, check the quality of the video, norm the stated xx Megapixels is FOR STILL IMAGE ONLY. Check the video quality.

If ur camera phone is like mine 2MP, take video only 176x144 - dun even think abt it. save ur time and energy, coz i wasted mine!

this is an example of nokia 5800 video recording at 640x480.

Lutein's video is at least 1280x720.

This is a good idea, but what if it rains? *scratch head

I think it will only take a few sec to dismount the camera...this is really a cool idea....

Alternatively u might want to get the olympus all weather camera...i think that a perfect camera for this project...

worst come to worst...just put it over with a plastic bag...:)

Yep, i put my handphone camera into a plastic pouch that wun budge - waterproofed!

but u gotta check a digital cam's video specs coz 10MP still image doesn't mean 10MP video - probably just 2-3MP video quality. veli big diff.

Khai, ur bike is :lovestruck::thumb: mouth-watering! :cheeky:

Lutein, i think u'll

hey TS, i thought of this idea long ago but nvr go research. reason for the cam was also same cause as urs but also looking out for road bully, dangerous road users, etc... but had a few doubts yet to clear

was looking for cheap yet clear with sound. i saw a spy pen in garage sales/PMO (http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191249)

next thing was where could i attached it as i'm riding a sport bikes.

thought of my jacket but it doesn't turns as my head does to check on blind spots or look at drivers who talk while driving, get e license plate no, etc...

still figuring...

dez some videos on youtube (search helmet camera?) that i recall showing ways to mount cam on helmet. most are permanent mounts.

my temporary mount, which can detach and 100% no "injury" to helmet, looks c0ck coz still at prototype stage! perhaps i can try to develop further and compile the idea soon?:cheeky:

mount on helmet -

pros: can turn

cons: dizzy video if u naturally do check blindspot. May coz more turbulence on head.

the pen video i researched b4, dun think it can take fantastic videos (probably cant even see plate no when u r tailgating a lorry) - coz the spec is abt same as normal camera phone.

I believe in "Cheap, good, small - Choose any 2!" that pen thing so small and cheap (relatively), seriously, dun expect HD quality or even near - y else do u think they dun even bother showing samples of the videos taken by it? :cheeky:

I think ultimately you have to be clear why u wanna film your rides to help you decide what videocam option to choose.

Mine is very simple. I wanna have video evidence in case accidents happen. So the videocam must:

1) Film videos at very high quality so that can even see the car plate number (in case of hit-and-run);

2) Be attached to my body so that even if I go hospital the camera will come with me (that rules out mounting it on the bike because other people may steal the camera when the bike is towed away).

So far only Vado HD meets the requirements. There's another bullet cam (mount on helmet) called VHoldR Contour HD that can also film in HD but you must buy online and it is quite expensive (USD300). For Vado HD at least I can go to the store and try the functions before buying.

To me, the video cam is another safety feature I want to adopt for my riding, in addition to safe riding style (I try!) and protective clothing. I'm not really filming to show off my riding so I can put up with some short-comings of this method (primarily shaky videos). If you want to have a nice, stable video showing the scenery around you, this method will not work. You need to mount on the bike instead.

Well it seems there's a Creative sale! Vado at $299 with free gift and local delivery! http://sg.store.creative.com/promos/gss09/product.aspx#video

Yes, she was the inspiration for getting the videocam. As you can see her video quality is not that good, but the identity of the other driver was known so recording the number plate was not that crucial.

I'd say get the best videocam you can afford. If you can afford only a handphone camera, use it now and slowly save for a better one (prices will eventually come down). To me it's better that you record something (assuming the other party is in the wrong hahaha) than nothing.

Ride safely!

this has been on my mind as well but never really discussed it

wonder if any electronic geniuses out there would be able to design a simple camera which would be able to just go on filming, doesn't need to be long, say last 15-30 minutes, but built in with an accelerometer.

this way, if you set the accelerometer to stop filming at sudden high speed stops or "superman" if you "fly" off your bike it will still capture the incident.

also if could use some solid state drive like a flash card of sorts - sd, micro sd, whatever, even if the filming device gets trashed in the incident, you can still retrieve data from the SSD.

got the idea, but dun have the know how... LOL

a simple fish eye pocket camera lens front and back should cover most angles...

recording device could be stashed under the seat or box

and if could set it to capture last 15 - 30 minutes and if no stoppage, to keep wiping out the oldest data.

so... any electronic wizards in the house?

Grounded... :/

i tot abt this as well. not really a genius in the matter. but from wat i noe, there are devices that auto save every interval.

im thinking nokia camera phone 3.2MP with autofocus good enuff or not? shd be better than my 2MP camera phone now, with no autofocus!

just try with wat u haf 1st lor, den when u get more inspired can try other devices! :cheeky:

Lutein: Regarding the helmet cams, im not so sure abt it coz at >90, dunno how big the drag is (on 1 side of the head?!). Think they designed it for cyclists/ skaters/ bladers etc.

All: now til 25 June 09, i am able to get further discounts on Creative HD Vado, abt $269 for 1 (sales price at $299). So if u interested let me know soon. :thumb:

Just purchase those helmet mounted cameras for mountain bikers... or sim lim alot of cameras... see how you want to mount only. I'm sure you can get a fairly decent one there at a decent price....

But pls if u buy from first floor shops must bargain... first floor = chop tourist prices

eh, "fairly decent" at "decent price" sounds very subjective, broad and vague.

also i reiterate:
