Thinking of going to get the 'flowers' decal tomorrow at the Ducati shop and also leaving my bike for some servicing..

Is the latter (leaving the bike there...) a good, bad or ridiculous idea?

Also, is there a recommended person to speak to there regarding these servicing work?

Mine is the 748 took over from NoLogic...

Currently about 87000 km on the clocks.

Nothing really done since I got the bike except for topping up the EO and battery water.

I am not sure what kind of servicing should I be doing but I am thinking of asking them to do a 10000km servicing... Any idea how much it will cost?

Also thinking of changing tires.

Any recommendations for semi road/track tires? Will I save any money by going to other shops for this or it is almost the same??

I use the bike like 95% road and maybe 5% track atm... (ratio could go either way)

and I dont mind paying more for better grip.

Thanks in advance for all advices!

OK, bro, remember the last odometer readings for the servicing I did? If you wanna do a 10K servicing, you add 10K from that. Timing belts were new and valve clearance is good.

Okay, 10k servicing is valve clearance, and the rest should be bleeding, coolant flushings, wear and tear replacement and what's not. That should be around $700 if you do at Minerva.

For your tyres, I suggest you try the ContiSports Attack. It used to be selling around $350 at HKL, and some $25-$50 more at other places. I have a friend using that on his CBR600F4, clocking high 50s in PG.

Michelin Pilot 2CT and Sportec M3 are good, try to get from LAB or HKL under $450. Tyres in the range of $480 to $500 plus, would be Diablo Corsa III, Dunlop Alpha (from Jap, very good street/track tyres), and Dunlop Qualifier.

Be sure of the sizes, always, like I say, ALWAYS, go for a 120/70-17 and NOT 120/60-17. You want a sharper front. For the rear, the rim allows only 180/55-17, NO 190 tyres.

Anymore queries, please post.

Hilary.

twin = 2 cylinder

v configuration = 2 bank of cylinders

L configuration = V configuration where the angle is 90 degrees

L twins have 2 pistons.

V twins comes with 2 pistons or 4 pistons.

If i'm not wrong, all ducati bikes u see in singapore are L-twins.

Only the Desmosedici (MotoGp) Has 4 pistons but i'm not sure if its L or V.

I'm not sure of the difference between V and L. But i do know that Inline engines will produce better bhp than V and L engines. V and L will have a stronger torque than the inline engines. Specifications on different motorbikes are not very accurate when u see them on magazines and internet. At the end of the day, most important is the rider. What kind of feel u wanna have, and how u wanna ride it.

thanks yammy and corse...

corse : how does ducati L-twins compare with other sports twins? like sp-2 (v-twins?), tl1000(v-twins?), rsv(v-twins)? and what about cruisers that uses twins engine? like harley, v-star.

sorry ah ask so many question just want to find out more

Like what yammy said "twins" mean 2 pistons/cylinders. Like "twin" kids mean 2 of them not 4.

The sedici has 4 pistons laid out in a VEE configuration so its a "vee-four".

Just like how the alphabet looks "V" has a narrower angle while "L" has a 90 degree angle.

Some crazy huge engines like those in super cars or even marine diesel engines have more. Muscle hungry americans love Vee-eights which mean 8 piston engines laid out in a "V" configuration. Large marine diesels usually have even more. I work on a marine diesel that has 20 pistons laid out in vee config so therefore "V-20". But the german OEM labels it as 20V. :faint: maybe only americans put the number of cylinders behind the letter "V"

When it comes to total number of valves, manufacturers usually states (lets say its an inline four with 4 valves per cylinder) "16v" (4x4).

Well IMHO I believe in the present motorcycle market, ducati produce the highest revving and most powerful twin cylinders.

One advantage twins have over inline fours besides having more torque lower down in the revs (have to note inline fours have bigger numbers for torque overall for the same capacity engine but much much higher in the revs) is the way the twins deliver the "pulses" to the rear wheel. More like "big bang" engines and aids traction when giving gas when going out of corners. I haven't gone to track (yet  ) but i know the theory at least:cheeky: .

There are many engine experts in the forum whom I think they can explain better. I tend to confuse even myself sometimes. :faint: not an expert.

Oh yeah last point; can't compare cruiser twins with sport twins. Cruiser twins aren't designed to be high revving so there's a lot of difference in feel etc etc. Like comparing a fazer to an R1, two different applications two different designs. Class of their own.. or something like that.

Hope this helps.

Ops! What I actually wanted to say is "inline fours have bigger numbers for peak torque overall for the same capacity but much higher in the revs.

:giddy:

Sorry..

The bore and stroke dimentions of an engine determines its characteristics. For example, two engines with the same capacity and number of cylinders. I think this is better explained over some teh. :)

Hello fellow ducati riders,

I've quite a few question in mind i like to know abt this beatiful bike, hopefully you guys here can help me solve the mystery behind it! haha

i'm considering to get this bike for daily usage, cause i was thinking if the maintaince cost high?

i've readed the forums and have saw ducati bike beening sold quite quickly apon getting hold of it. haha, pardon me if i'm wrong!!!

as i dont want bikes that would break down often. So my question is willl this bike be good for daily usage or is it just an weekend bike?

Yup some teh over this kind of topic is better. Typing makes hands tired. :cheeky:

Well I'm not too sure whats the difference in characteristics of a 60 degree and a 90 degree config. Maybe someone in the forums can help with this?

IMHO I don't think theres a BIG difference. BUT theres a BIG difference in feel between a twin and an inline four. You'll have to try it. :D

One thing you'll notice when manufacturers design an engine is you don't normally see the pistons laid out so they go up and down perpendicular to the ground. They usually are slanted so that it would take less effort to go up and down. Just like climbing a ladder straight up is harder than at an angle. Take a look at your own bike. So maybe that's what the different angles are for. Lesser force needed. OEMs have their own reasons for choosing. Maybe ducati thinks "L" will spread the effect of the power stroke further apart in the rotation of the crank so that the impact on the crank is more evenly distributed in the 360 degrees (90 is larger angle than 60 in 360 degree of rotation? Open to debate here. Sorry if I'm confusing here. Need the teh part here...

Ops I'm starting to talk c*ck.

nEO is right. Bore and stroke makes a lot of difference. Shorter stroke bigger bore gives higher peak revs but the downside is in order to use that power you have to stay high up. Longer stroke smaller bore you get more torque down low but lower peak revs (because pistons take longer time to move up and down so it takes a longer time to complete a full revolution of the crank). The advantage is usable power down low so you don't have to keep the engine screaming all the time but not much hp because of the lower revs.

But there's LOTS of other things that affect peak power like weight of the engine components, the timing of the valves etc etc... this is where the teh comes in again.

But as with religion, this kind of topic is very debatable and I've seen "engineers" (basically older men who have been in the business long or those who study a lot) get into arguments often. Engineer's IMO have the BIGGEST egos.

So I'm no engineer therefore I need :help: explaining! Anyone??

End of the day, like what corse said. The rider makes the biggest difference.

Hmm I'm becoming an uncle already... long winded.... :dot:

Depends on which bike you want to get. The 4valve/cylinder ducs are rather high in maintainence. So if you want to ride them everyday I suggest a deep pocket. That said you must do regular maintainance as with all bikes to remain reliable. Modern ducs are getting better in terms of reliabilty compared to the older generations but everything man made still breaks down though.

2valve/cylinder ducs have lower cost for the full servicings so you can look into them if you want a commuter and on a tighter budget. Basically they will be air-cooled for the ducati range.

As for selling just after buying... well they have their own reasons. For me I've been riding them for years. I think the reason is usually money related. Im on a budget so my duc is a weekend bike so thats why I can own them for longer. If you really love ducs like us but don't have that much money to burn, take it as a weekend bike like me.

Boils down to the "passion", my colleagues and even my wife says Im crazy to buy something that's typically out of my range. :cheeky: can't help it la...

 nAt_d_dUck thank u for your very detailed explanation... me have not ride a inline so far in my biking day... 2 stroke all the way for my 2b and 2a. been very interested in twins since one of my friends rode a tl1000 and now he is riding a sp2.. me riding a miniature 250 twins... :cheeky: the new monster 696 make me drolls haiz if it was 666cc haha

The v angle determines the firing pattern and therfore the difference in exhaust note between Ducati (90 degree) and Aprilia (60 degree)
