I know some riders have a class2 bike (for leisure, touring etc) plus a small bike for daily transport. but with the hassle of maintaining 2 bikes and price hikes in insurance premium, it may seem wise to stick to just 1 bike.

Are there any >600cc bikes which are reasonably fuel-economy? lets share.

The bmw f800gs gives about 25km/l too, looks great with and comes great acceleration and features packed.

Read in this forum before, that somebody actually got near to 30km/l.

30km/l is incredible. even a super4 dont get close to it.

i heard that in Germany, the highest grade of petrol available is RON95. that means this german bike is designed to run on 95/92 or less.

even more savings on fuel costs.

Singles and small twins will get pretty good FCs.

Especially those meant for enduro rides.

Another class2 bike with very good fuel economy is TDM900.

Need a TDM900 rider to give the exact number.

Surprise, surprise. 600cc does not mean less fuel consumption.

Typical Japanese sportsbike and Japanese inline-4 bikes of 600 to 1,000cc have almost the same fuel consumption. Singapore riding fuel consumption falls into 15 to 18km/litre depending on riding style and traffic type.

But what I have learnt over years of actual playing with all sorts of bikes and cars:

- There is no free lunch.

If you want a bike/car which gives you good acceleration, prepare to pay for worse fuel consumption. After all, acceleration comes from energy, comes from fuel.

And if you want a bike/car which gives you good fuel economy, prepare to have sub-par acceleration ability. After all, when the vehicle uses less fuel, means less energy available, means less acceleration.

Can't escape physics. Got to accept the trade-off.

Caveats are:

- Of course when there is superior technology involved. Eg: iVTEC cars vs cars with no iVTEC. EFI bikes vs carburetted bikes.

- Optimisation. Optimise performance for a certain style of riding or within a certain band of rpm. Eg: via fuel mapping, engine configuration.

In my opinion, the fuel consumption of a 600-1000cc jap inline4 versus a Super4 is not as bad as most people think. Super4 VTECs are about 20-22km/litre, riding in singapore. Meaning a class2 jap has increased fuel consumption of about 30%. Assuming a 500km average month mileage, this works out to just about $20+ additional per month. Or $1 per day.

getting a bm in sg means ur probably not concerned abt fuel consumption at all haha.

the other bike to consider would b another twin... the kawasaki er6n or er6f. based on reading magazines n owner reports, u can expect 24km to the litre. good acceleration, too.

i got average 20km/l on my CBR1000RR travelling between 110-130km/h.

of course wit the help of a PC3 n straight through end pipe.

is fazer 600cc good class 2 bike w good fuel consumption? heard from some one when im learning class 2 lessons in ubi can consider fazer 600cc.. a fairly good street bike reliable..

Too much hassle to find the perfect bike.

Want CL2 with good performance, but frugal consumption? Forget it.

You may be able to find a compromise, but they're few and far between.. and usually those bikes are quirky or downright ugly.

I'll stick with the tried and true formula of keeping 1 performance CL2 bike for leisure/tour and 1 small bike for commuting.

I've just scrapped my small bike a little while back, and am looking for a scooter, in the 250 - 400cc range for the town runabout.

Yes. That is a good choice indeed. But a wee bit on the pricey side.

Am considering a quarter liter King, perhaps?

1/4 litre king? Why not go for the Burgerking aka halfabusa? :D

Seriously, 250cc maxi-scoots are the perfect balance of fuel economy + comfort + space + weight + maintenance. 400cc scoots are significantly heavier.

Yes a 250 does make sense for a runabout. Hence I was looking around for a Majesty 250. A 400 would be under consideration too.

Any diff in the fuel economy and running costs? Not that much right?

i can only stick to one machine...insurance not in my favor due to age...next year then 26...

Fuel economy is slightly better for 250 (28km/litre vs 24km/litre) etc.

Running costs, the 400cc is slightly higher too. And because the 400 is heavier, its more stable at speed, and can cruise at highway speeds easier. 250 can only cruise comfortably at 70-80.

Not sure about the f800gs...but on one account in the book "Long Way Round", Ewan wrote: "I crashed and came tumbling off. Early on in the trip my pride would have been bruised, but as falling off had become a daily occurrence, this only made me laugh. I was okay. And the bike (BMW F1150 GSA) was hardly damaged. It had taken so many knocks from me and been fed low-grade 76 octane petrol for two weeks, yet it just ploughed on, a quite brilliant machine."

I suppose those bikes (and probably the f800gs) was built to be rugged! You can probably put in the lowest grade and they will still run :-)

Righto. If the diff ain't that much, I'll prob look for a 400. I can't do 70/80 on the expressway. I'd die of boredom!

BTW, u know of any used ones on sale now? Looking at mid-life bikes. Don't wanna spend too much on a runabout.

much more powerful...

i can cruise at 110km/h on e expressway, n im not even at half throttle...
