I suggest, you get a backing. Perhaps from a think plastic. the plastic of the pplate is brittle.

not forgetting some low lifes' who may steal your plates coz they're too cheap to get some of their own...

p/s saw some of your pics in your links (at your signature) nice shots... :)

that's true. there will always be the risk of somebody taking the plates. but i think that cannot really be helped.

glad you like the pictures :-) i used to be active in photography but lately have other pursuits that are occupying my time :-)

did u photoshop that p plate in?

i'm sure the p-plate wasn't done with photoshop in this picture. the bike belongs to somebody who is active in the tw200 page :-)

Prank, plastic fatigue after wind blast with vibrations.

Anyone can ride a bike. Being a biker, is a state of mind.

it sure came off nice and clean...perfectly straight line right across...smooth to the touch too. sigh. you think its plastic fatigue? if so...my next plate will go on the saddlebag.

I'm concerned about the rear p-plate basically. If using the plastic again surely will break off. Which metal bracket are you referring to? The one I attached my old p-plate is meant for a rear reflected which I intend to re-use when the year is up. So bending that isn't an option at the moment.

I've done quite a number of searches on the web but haven't found any properly worded documentation on the physical requirements of the p-plate. Can you help point me to one? It will surely help me do this right. At the moment, I can't think of a better way...unless I stitch the whole plate (plastic and all) into the saddlebag somehow.

yeah...thought of that...however, the plastic is rather heavy. and i'm sure the wind will buffet it enough to pull off the sticky part of the tape. i have an idea here. i'll see if i can find some sort of metal plate that will go behind the entire plate...like screw on top and bottom to the metal plate, then screw that metal plate onto the bike. where to find that metal plate is the next headache...maybe one of those old biscuit tins!! hahaha! i'll update again. those p-plates should be made so that they don't break off!

if you really want a answer.what u can do is to sent in a email to traffic police.

just bend it back when you wanna fit the reflector.

if not, add spacer to push out your number plate and you have 2 screw on number plate 1 screw on the bracket.

if u tell TP this.....haha.can tear off meh?cannot tear off meh?

that is a problem. i've decided to put some sort of metal plate at the back to strengthen it. or maybe fab a simple bracket so i can put the plate in and take it out when i park or something.

in any case, i'm very uncomfortable that the physical spec requirements are not publicly available. i cannot imagine the traffic police booking anyone for being out of spec if this isn't available. i'll write in to confirm...and will update after.

ok.here the drawing i do.

u can use nuts as spacer.

for your front i suggest you use velcro to stick onto the head crowing

thats a great idea! let me see if that can be done for my bike. i did have another one that i'm working on. will post it soon too.

thanks for the tips, guys! originally, i used the 3m tapes that came with the p-plates for the front. and the seller of the bike helped me to use a screw to secure the p-plate at the back with a double nut for security in case it falls off. i was warned that the plastic can break so i had to do something about the rear p-plate to prevent it from falling off.

i went back home and decided that the front was also not that secure as it is just 3m tape that is used normally inside cars (with no wind nor rain). so i used cable tie for the front now and it looks like this (not the nicest job but it will hold).

http://simonnunis.smugmug.com/photos/605806827_jonKN-M.jpg

i also used cut out a small piece of an old leather belt and put it between the p-plate and the metal plate for the rear. i think it looks like the plastic may last a little longer now as the leather takes away some of that pressure from the tight screw/nut. the plastic around the hole where the screw is isn't bending anymore :-)

http://simonnunis.smugmug.com/photos/605806993_J9xfw-M.jpg

also, i put a piece of plastic at the back between the two nuts to make it more secure so the nuts won't fall off even in bad vibrations...and hopefully will prevent some petty thieves from trying to remove the rear plate...of course they can also just break it off...sigh.

http://simonnunis.smugmug.com/photos/605807110_Bz8tx-M.jpg

think this should hold the plates up for a year...or a few months at least. anyone knows how to keep them clean? mine are SO dirty already!

try not to put your front plate like that. i did that on my first bike. if you are not careful you can scratch the fender when the plate flaps around.

you can use the 3m tape that comes with the p-plate and stick it onto your bike's "face" (the part above the headlamp) if it's big enough.

best of all, you can easily remove the front p-plate if a non p-plate rider is riding your bike, and you can remove the p-plate and put it back on upside down when you're bored at traffic lights

the back plate will crack anyway. all my back plates have cracked on me and flew off while the bike was moving (after the plastic degraded and became brittle). one flew off on the expressway (hope it didnt hit anything behind :cheeky:)

you might need to buy a few sets of p-plates in the course of your p-plate period... usually the front one will stay if you secure it to the "face" of the bike... the back one will keep escaping cause it's hanging and the forces on it are pretty significant (but no choice for us scram riders who dont have much space on the rear :p)

boring rider. with a boring bike.

too old to want to appear interesting anymore.

well, i was trying to look for something that i can use to fabricate a p-plate holder for the rear of the bike. the best things i could find were old biscuit tins. unfortunately, i do not have the tools needed to fold them into shape.

also, i wrote to the traffic police requesting for clarification on the plates. from what they wrote back (which is rather ambiguous), it would seem that the only place for the rear p-plate is above or below the number plate. this means that what i did (i.e. pasting it on the saddlebag) isn't legal, technically. even though i passed a road block and wasn't told anything at that time, its best to change the position.

so, without the proper tools to fabricate a simple holder, i decided to do what was recommended to me in an earlier response. here's what i came up with.

http://simonnunis.smugmug.com/photos/625407221_cT7Xv-M.jpg

these p-plates are surely reflective! i took several pictures but this first one shows the screw the best. i had to poke a hole through the plate (a little high up, i know...my back plate isn't long enough to make it lower) to thread a screw through. it was easily done with my screwdriver :-)

http://simonnunis.smugmug.com/photos/625407138_XLw2m-M.jpg

for the back, i used that piece of metal that held my old horn to the bike. since i did not have tools to fabricate anything, i decided to just reuse bits that i had instead. its not the ideal thing to do and it is a little short. but still, it should hold the p-plate in place slightly better than before.

well, i'm still on the lookout for a better solution. either a longer plate, or ideally, a holder where i can insert the plate before i ride and remove the plate when i park. will update again when i do it.

can anyone help me figure out where i can get a piece of metal and bend it along the dotted lines, cut along the black lines as illustrated? it would serve as a simple p-plate holder if this simple thing can be done.

I think hardware shops along defu lane will have. Neighbourhood hardware shop, you may ask also. Who knows they may help you cut and bend to shape with some kopi money. :cheeky:

If only everyone are as serious about P plate as you, guess it all comes to age and maturity.

i'll ask the hardware shop opposite my place first...its just that mine dropped only after 15-days and i got tired of having to worry about replacing it all the time, especially with the feedback.

by the way, the TP just responded that they are checking with other p-plate holders if the p-plates need to be improved. will keep you posted.
