Hi fellow riders,

Sorry for the long post:

I am considering to change from a Fazer1000(Gen 1) to another bike.

My current bike is running fine, but its getting abit old. The wear and tear is probably going to mount up,with more and more trips to the bikeshop.

I got intentions to do some frequent touring, so would like to have a bike that is going to last the distance.

Will be using it 90% for my daily commute. 10% will be for the trip to Malaysia and less frequetly, probably further up. Rider and pillion comfort and luggage capacity is a important point also. So I am just looking for commuters, sports tourers and lite tourers.

My list includes the following bike. Please give me your opinions and please do add on if you have anything suitable for me:

1) Gen 2 FZ1:

Keen on this ABS model. I am used to Fazer, but seems boring to buy the same bike twice? Then again, it a great value for money bike.

2) TDM 900:

Seems no more production?

3) V Strom:

How's the daily running? Parts any issue?

4) Deauville 700:

Surprising much more expensive than the FZ1. Quoted 23K + for that. Hardcore price.

5) Bandit 1250: Supposed to be the cheaper of CL2 bikes, compared to other brands. But I havent seen 1 on the Sg road and parts is a major concern for me.

6) CB1300: Seems rare also. The last time I asked for a quote, was out of my budget.

7) VFR: Out of budget. I tried one, but the posture is not suitable for someone with a bad back. :(

I will be frank. I think I am used to the power capcacity of a litre bike, so I dont think I will be getting a lower capacity bike, even more so when I tour with 2 up.

Though I will probably never use more than 50% of the bike capacity, the throttle reponse at low-mid range is very important to a lazy hand like mine. :)

The hi end bikes like BMWs, ST1300, FJR, GTR...etc are out because I am just a average Joe earning a below average pay. haha... :)

Please advise bros.

Thanks!

FZ1 will be your answer. :)

agreed..Gen2 fuel capacity dissapointing but u get to make more stops to rest!

consider getting an older ST or FJR?(about same price as new FZ1) or wait for the 2010 models to consider more options.

Thanks for the replies.

Wont be getting a older bike as one of my main intentions is to have a brand new bike to take it to places w.o fear of it breaking down and having to haul it to the shops every now and then.

With old bikes, I can never be too sure. :)

For ST and FJR, though very nice, will be too wide for me on a daily basis.

hi there bro..

i just sold my Gen1 last month.. now zipping around on my sparkie.. i am also looking at brand new bikes. I always wanted a dual purpose bike so i am going to that direction. DP bikes always look great with a set of alu panniers for touring or even just an alu topbox for daily commuting. Don't mind me, i have a thing for Alu panniers and topbox.

As most DP bikes are either v-twin or parallel twin engines, i would say the low and mid range power would be good for daily commuting here.

Tubeless rims will always be an added bonus.. always easier to poke worms than to change tubes while touring..

my choices of bike...

TDM - i wanted to a brand new TDM but what i heard no more after 09.. no idea if it's out of production or HL won't bring it in anymore..

Suzuki V-strom - is also nice but i have not seen any brand new V-stroms 1k.. only 650s aree available at Loois.

Honda Varadero - no new ones as yet.. mebbe an update in 2010?

Honda Africa Twins - this bike will live and live.. many are still swearing by it.. but it seems parts seem hard to come by.. a friend had a hard time looking for a CDI when he burnt his. Non-tubeless

KTM990ADV - may be a bit costly to ur budget.. and heard stories of 2 bikes EO casing cracked case on brand new bikes. Non-tubeless

BMW1200GS - *sigh*

Honda Transalp700 - either u like it or u don't.. non-tubeless.. new ones available at Loois. Non-tubeless

Kawa Versys - looks good and sporty.. all black version is nice. 650 parallel twin engine. but parts may be an availability problem esp if want a fast down time..

but i'll wait for 2010 line up is out before i make up my mind.

just sharing my 5cents...

My Own Opinion;

Don't think you will go wrong when choosing de Yamaha bikes!

Gen2 FZ1S it's lighter, sharper, more powerful and sportier riding position then your current Fazer!Really got abit dissapointment on de fuel tank.

TDM900 a underrated great all-rounder.Thus not as powerful as de Fazer, still superb at touring and commuting.A good realiable engine wif good fuel consumption aswell.09' model avaliable in Europe, don't know why HL stop bring them in?

Honda bikes look boring, too heavy weight on tourers/sport-tourers & big trailies, pricing far too ex!Just feel tat they doesn't have a passion for motorcycles any longer.

As for Suzuki they are well known at building big bore "Supersports & Hypersports".Still soft on big Retros & Trailies!

Lastly,if you are not in a hurry,it's still a good time now to wait for 2010 release!

I heard alot about the V-twin and parallel twins and their low to mid end power. Was actually interested in the V-Strom, but seems way exp for the 1000.

my choices of bike...

TDM - i wanted to a brand new TDM but what i heard no more after 09.. no idea if it's out of production or HL won't bring it in anymore..

Ya, I did not see it at the showroom nor the price list. Guess they are not bringing in anymore.

Suzuki V-strom - is also nice but i have not seen any brand new V-stroms 1k.. only 650s aree available at Loois.

Will go down and take a look. Got to see what is the price like.

Honda Varadero - no new ones as yet.. mebbe an update in 2010?

Never really take a personal liking to the Varadero. Way too huge for me. :)

Honda Africa Twins - this bike will live and live.. many are still swearing by it.. but it seems parts seem hard to come by.. a friend had a hard time looking for a CDI when he burnt his. Non-tubeless

Same. Cos I am basically looking for a city bike with the option to do some touring with comfort, 2 up.

KTM990ADV - may be a bit costly to ur budget.. and heard stories of 2 bikes EO casing cracked case on brand new bikes. Non-tubeless

The $$$! The $$$$!!! haha...

BMW1200GS - *sigh*

This one ah?...Maybe next life, or if i strike lottery 2 million...

Honda Transalp700 - either u like it or u don't.. non-tubeless.. new ones available at Loois. Non-tubeless

I saw the new version. Looks very plasticky, ya? Not a trailer/adventure bike fan.

Kawa Versys - looks good and sporty.. all black version is nice. 650 parallel twin engine. but parts may be an availability problem esp if want a fast down time..

The parts is a major concern, so i didnt take into consideration Kawasaki and Suzukis.

but i'll wait for 2010 line up is out before i make up my mind.

Good luck to you bro. I think my mind is more or less set on the Fazer Gen 2, becos the 2010 version is identical to the 2009 one and I do not really need to rob a bank to afford it, unlike some of the bikes listed here...haha...And unless I go down to the shops and something else catches my eyes. :)

just sharing my 5cents...

Hi bro, thanks for the reply.

I saw the bike on the mags, on the showroom and on the road before. :)

Didnt take a liking to it, and it's priced as a hi-end bike.

Out of budget and it's not really in my mind.

I prefer the CB1300, but then again, the price is way too high for me.

Thanks for the replies bros.

I think I am more or less fixed on the FZ1, after calling up the shops these few days.

Will be going down to see more bikes, but unless the deals are very good, else I will still get the FZ1.

One irritating detail is the fuel capacity. Down from the Gen 1's 21 litres to the current 18 litres.

And the seat seems a bit harder compared to the Gen 1?
