Hi people,

If I were to purchase a second hand bike from a random guy, what process should we go through?

Do we need to go to a licensed motorcycle dealer like HENG motors/ Excel cycles to get it done?

Apart from the price of the bike the guy is selling to me, what other charges are there from the dealer completing the owner transfership?

Will we b able to get our insurance for the bike at the sametime from the dealer?

Thank you.

go to the insurance agent to get your insurance done. if you're below 21, only NTUC income will accept you i think. you can call them to get the paperwork done over the phone and then head down to any of their outlets to just make the payment. after head over to lta for transfer of ownership. its simple actually, don't have to go through bike shop and pay the ridiculous service fee. :)

if both parties agreed on the price and the buyer asked the seller to reserve the bike while he go and do insurance. Do the buyer need to pay some deposit or totally based on trust?

It may sound stupid to some but am asking becos the buyer could back out suddenly and the seller could lost some potential buyers during the reservation period.

Thanks.

it depends on the both of you. there's no 'fixed' rule on whether if deposit should be paid or not. if seller wants a deposit to play safe and you feel comfortable with it, then by all means go ahead.

How about the road tax?

If I take over the bike, does I need to purchase need road tax? OR I can ride till the current road tax expire?

bike is a machine without soul, rider would inject new life and character to this machine

road tax stays with the bike regardless of the owner. so you are right, you can ride until the current road tax expires before renewing. :thumb:

oh so it's actually cheaper buying direct from sellers than from those 2nd hand dealers? And COE wise, we can chose not to renew it immediately right? We can wait till it's expiring then we renew right?

yes, it is usually cheaper to buy directly from seller than motorshops as the quoted price by sellers include the machine price, COE, road tax or any assessories of the bike.

On the side of the buyer, he/she just need to pay the quoted price by seller plus the transfership fees and the insurance of the buyer.

Having said that, though it may be cheaper, but there is always the uncertainty factor that the seller could be low-balling the buyer by not giving an accurate picture of the bike though it is seldom the case.

Cheers!

normally you can also "view" the seller as well... from there you will get an idea of how the bike has been treated during its stay with the seller

boring rider. with a boring bike.

There are several advantages of buying a Bike from the direct buyer as oppose to the Shops .......

We can findout more details on the history of the bike , what has been done , where and how the owner had treated his machine .

The "original" state of the bike is very evident with a private owner.

You can assess from the " original " conditions to see what further expenditure you would need to incurr when you take over .

In the case of a shop , most used bikes would have already been " treated " , with, superficial TOUCH-UPs , i think very few Bike shops would take the trouble to do a thorough job , and they would usually surfaced after a very short time of taking over . History of the Bike would always remained a Mystery ......, Price is also a concern too .

Of course , track records , recomendations and endorsements from friends would help , cos they have prior experiences when they deal with their favourite shops, these are truely reliable shops as they have proven their worth from word of mouth recommendations .

The task of testing and evaluation when it comes to buying second hand bikes would rest on the Buyer's experiences , often a 2nd opinion from a buddy rider , or paying some kopi money to get yr mechanics to test them would be a better idea too .

i learnt the hard way though.... i used to buy bikes that would give problem after awhile, and so i learnt too ..... juz my 2 cents worth of opinion to share with u .... though i drive 90% of the time ... my passion for bikes remained.

The xperience i had with bikes really contributed to my knowledge in Cars .

BUYING A PROBLEM BIKE is really not a bad idea too...... as it will help you to better understand bikes and improve yr knowledge of bikes too .....

so dont feel despair when you have made a wrong choice, learn the hard way then ..... what the hack .... we are suppose to learn every day any way .

ya... e.g. if seller seems clueless about bike, proper servicing may not have been done

if seller talk like "lacer"... bike may have been ridden hard and abused

also can sometimes tell if seller is honest or not, if seller dont seem honest about certain stuff done to the bike then you might wonder what else he is trying to hide too...

as for bike shop, cannot expect them to know that much about the history of the bike...

boring rider. with a boring bike.

too old to want to appear interesting anymore.
