Bikes are mostly wet clutch whereas most cars are dry clutch... unless you riding some Ducatis or NSR250.

 

Wet clutch means the clutch plates are lubricated by the engine oil which also means that the heat generated and the wear and tear of the clutch plates is passed on to the oil.

 

In short... the oil in a bike breaks down faster than the oil in a car.

 

And its not the distance travelled that determines the frequency of the oil change... its the amount of abuse the engine is getting.

 

What the manufacturer recommends is only a guide. A guide is a guide only.

 

The biggest enemy of oil is heat. Heat breaks down the oil.

 

1000 km of city riding with all its stop and go and gear shifting does more heat damage to the oil than 1000 km of highway cruising where the engine does not over heat at all.

 

When the radiator fan comes on... the engine is in the overheat zone and the oil is breaking down already.

 

And synthetic oil is meant for operations at maximum engine output. Thats why they come out with it... to operate in the redline zone of those high performance machines. If you don't do your gearshifts at the redline all the time... you really don't need fully synthetic oil.

 

Just sharing my thoughts, you guys decide on the frequency of oil change and type of oil you want to use. Its your money and your bike. Cheers. :cheers:

 

so when the radiator fan comes on thats when the engine is overheat?wat factor could contribute to tis?ok heres my situation...i just bought a 2nd hand vtec3 abt 2 weeks ago.But it has only run for 19000 km coz the prvious owner drive company car n btw tis bike is from 06.So now my bike gets quite hot even just started n riding it for awhile.Then just now coming home fr werk i sped fr jrg to wlds,park my bike n off engine not by ignition key but fr u know the power cut off button n tis strange sound was heard fr the engine.I call it strange bcoz tis is my first time riding 4 stroke bike.I turn off the ignition key then the sound diisapear.N yes it sounds like a fan turning.So pls give some of ur wisdom regarding tis.Still got a lot to learn.....

You can make the post better by paragraphing it. Otherwise, it makes for headache inducing reading. :)

 

Radiator will be switched on automatically once the engine reaches a certain temperature.

It's not 'overheat' lah...just a additional feature to help cool the engine. :)

 

If you have just changed from a smaller bike to a bigger one, and a naked one at that, then the heat you experienced is probably very normal.

When you upgraded to an even bigger bike, then we are talking. haha...

The bigger the engine, the more heat it generates.

bring the temperature down maybe just a little bit coz im not comfortable

For me, i change when i dont get the same feeling anymore.

 

Gearshift not smooth, sound of the engine at various temperatures, how easy to start in the morning, etc etc. I dunnno how i know when to change, just "feel" what my bike is telling me. When you ride your bike everyday, you will know what is best for your bike.

 

I second your opinion.

Usually smooth then use till not smooth. Go and change engine oil. Smooth back. That is the normal routine.

 

For normal 4T 2B bike with oil filter. (Just a guideline)

Fully syn i dun't know. I never use fully before.

Semi syn ard 1000 to 1300km. Min to max

Mineral ard 850 to 1000km. Min to max

Sae40 450 to 500km. Min to max

History n Present ride

Nov '00 till Dec '00 - Aprilia RS 125cc 1 Mth

Dec '00 till Oct '05- Yamaha RXZ Delux 135cc 4 Years 11Mths

Feb '04 till Dec '09 - Honda Wave-S 125cc 5 Years 10Mths

Dec '09 till Sept '12 - Yamaha FZ150i 2 Years 9Mths

Sept 12 till Aug '19 - Yamaha Spark 135 RX 6 Years 11Mths

Aug '19 till Present - Honda CB125F

For 2nd hand bikes, if you are not sure of the history, checking and changing the coolant and brake fluid might be a good idea.

 

Some people use Engine Ice, some use Maxima Coolaide.

You can give it a try, but per bottle of Engine Ice is around $25 or more? I forgot already. :)

 

1 more thing, some riders connect their fan to make it permanently on, but I wonder if it is required at all. Seems to me that the only thing it make is to wear out the fan faster.

After all, the fan is meant to help cool down the engine when required, and not all the time. :)

 

You will get used to the heat soon lah, i tink. :)
