How Google's Nexus One censors cuss words

by Chris Matyszczyk

Some of you who have been basking in the beauty of your new Nexus One Googlephone may not have tried out all of its delightful features.

And what I am about to tell you may lead you to utter some naughty words. Please, go ahead. I have heard them all, in several different languages. And I respect the vehemence of the vernacular.

However, your Nexus One will not be so charmed by the vigor of your tongue. It will, dare I utter the word when referring to a product from the newly emancipated Google, censor you.

You see, the pungently polite people at Reuters were playing with their Nexus One when they noticed something about its built-in voice-to-text feature.

Every time they said something naughty into the phone, the naughty word came out as "####"--and not just "f---." It even censored the "S" part of BS.

Reuters immediately called Google and screamed at them: "What the #### are you miserable ############# playing at?"

Oh, perhaps I have stretched the boundaries of possibility with that heartening notion. They probably asked a little more politely, given that they secured a really quite ingenious reply from a Googleperson.

Apparently, the censorship is not because Google is trying to clean up the world and turn it into the nicest parts of Alabama. No, the company is worried about what might be transcribed.

"We filter potentially offensive or inappropriate results because we want to avoid situations whereby we might misrecognize a spoken query and return profanity when, in fact, the user said something completely innocent," Google told Reuters.

Yes, the technology isn't quite perfect, so even the potential of a misplaced curse is being avoided at all costs.

What interests me most is how Google chooses its list of naughty nuances. Is there some poor engineer over at the Googleplex whose sole task was to write software that immediately identifies expletive expressions? Do they take account of those who swear in Spanish, Italian, or, like me, Polish?

And if you say "For crying out loud" a little too quickly, might the transcription come out with a four letter f-word (or rather four hash marks) at the beginning?

One other thing. I have a Croatian friend. If I ever got a Nexus One, I would like to be able to address him by his name. His name is Fuk. Would his name be transcribed, every time, as ###? How sad.

i only got 1 question. how do you solve the problem for aftermarket products? i faced this problem when i bought my iphone 2g 2 years ago. only when iphone 3g is released, then magically, aftermarket products for iphone are everywhere!! i bet there's none sold for the google nexus right now in sg!

i hope it will be sold by a telcom company in sg so we can get it even cheaper! time to renew my contract anyway :D

fat hope la!

Multi-tasking will slow down the phone.

iPhone is fast because it cannot multi-task.

Just close applications after usage~! :D Can't wait to get my hands on mine.

and that is? iphone or google nexus?

aniwae, i think iphone touchscreen is still the best in the world... android still kind lag.... watch out for ipad! father of iphone!

not sure about acer just read reviews that its' not bad la. actually i think diff brands go thru phases of development so i wouldn't give it a death seal immediately. i used to have a HTC that was so darn slow that i gave up within a few months. and wala! now the google phone is actually made by HTC.

though i like e iphone applications but i hate it being so proprietary in so many ways and my biggest grip is the built in battery + the tiny life span of the battery. nothing's really perfect so am just waiting to see what other options there are.

think am quite pro HTC/google phone but see how :)

U mean the iTampon? Additional accessories comes with wings?? hahaha...

Well for your comparison, its kinda unfair, the iphone OS has been around for awhile... The android is sill in its infant stage... Give it time and it will show its potential.

iphone uses heat-sensitive tracking to response to your inputs..

all other touchscreen uses capacitive screens.

New Software Update for Nexus One phones

Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive an over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features, and fixes a few problems that some users might have experienced, including:

Google Goggles: this mobile application will now be available directly on your device by launching it from your All Apps menu. Just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web

Google Maps: the Maps application with be updated to a new version, Google Maps 3.4, which will include:

  • Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com - access your favorite places from your phone or computer
  • Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history - makes it easy to search for places you've searched for before
  • Night mode in Google Maps Navigation - automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving

Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone's Browser, Gallery and Maps applications

3G connectivity: we will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones

In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones - and most users might not receive the notification until the end of the week. We hope you enjoy these new features and look forward to your feedback.

Just bought a iphone 2 mths back. No regrets for that. Entertainment phone

It's entertaining because of the apps. Give the Android market some time to have 20,000 apps (like how the iTunes app store have now) in their marketplace and we'll see where it goes from there.
