Hi Bros and Sis of ST 1100

i need help and advice from bros and sis over here......My ST 1100 suffer from this unusual problem. One of the spark plug will usually burn after used for between 3000K to 5000KM. The immediate feel is lost of power when turn throttle and it only happened to the same spark plug.

Had change the Carb pin, but the same problem still persist. Mech at ubi "p****t" told me cant help it...just come over to change spark plug whenever it burn......this has goes on for quite some time and my ride is due for COE renewal.......

Any bro or sis had similiar problem and can advise help or shop to recommend who can do a good repair at a reasonable price (I think also changing timing belt too)? beside this problem the bike is serving me well......really hope i can continue riding it.....Please HELP .....

hi bro, the below is an extract from st-owners.com -

Your fouling 1 plug??

'If thats the case you have a carb that may have a float needle skicking wide open.

When you pin your throttle wide open under power it starts to empy the float bowl. The float drops and it opens the float needle to refill the bowl. If the float needle gets hung up in the open pos. it will just keep filling the bowl until it run's over. This run over has to go some place so it goes to the cyln's.

The plug can not burn that much fuel so it fouls the plug. The unburnt fuel goes to the exhaust pipes (which are hot) and burn's in them (ie. melted plastic's).

You could try taping on each carb (float bowl) and it may unstick the float needle. This is not a fix, but it will keep the bike running till you can get her to a shop.

Bottom line: don't pin the thottle wide open to cause this problem until you can get it looked at.

If you let her sit and put something in her for the winter, I would think a good carb cleaning and rebuild would take care of it.'

i really got no experience for both u mentioned . Normally i send my bike to Unique or HKL

But usually a Southern Motor Alexandra , i see the mechanics always repairing bikes like ST and FJR n quite a number of riders do send it there.

U might want to consider ;)

put on the tank bra, it'll eliminate excess heat reaching your crotch area, even in start stop traffic:angel:

There are a few options available but as add-on and DIYs.

1. Remove lower fairing cowl (permanently, but destroy bike's outlook)

2. Add tank bra (as one fellow STX has just posted, and which I did)

3. Add heat deflecting insulation below the tank and seat (which I hope to do)

4. Heat Wrap you exhaust headers (which I did)

5. Add wind deflectors (which i did)

6. Ensure proper synchronisation of your values ... (need a workshop to do it)

Currently I have no issue with all those that I have done with a very much heat reduction extended upwards

Yea, i had a hell of a hard time also. So far i've figured out a few things

  • I had to swing my body weight from the front to the back as i put it on centre stand
  • Its not so much as lifting it upwards as lifting it upwards and pulling backwards and extending my body and leg, push the center stand down.
  • Make sure to pull on the handle bar backwards seem to help.

Till now, sometimes I seem to get it easily, sometimes I still get stuck. zzz

Try this...

1) park your bike side stand do not remove(center the handlebar make it easier)

2) Stand on the left and put place your left hand on the left grip firmly and right hand on the mainstand grip

3) NOw use your right feet and place the mainstand down and center the bike upright slowly.Make sure the bike is position straight

4)U need the momentum. With the bike firmly stable with the mainstand, rock your body left to right to shift the weight over the mainstand and lift the mainstand handle up. (may need practice)

5) Your body weight must be applied to the stand to raise the bike up.

Hope this helps.

I like your suggestion number 5 ie. using air to cool the engine. Can post any pic in relation to this ? Thks.
