o H&B - hard pull up (as the stop/support leg is short + unsupportive)

o YMH (oem) - easiest (hav de longers support leg) but need more $$$ to own 1

0 SW Motech - just nice; good enuf (just like nukye wan)

Read this and you TDM owners will still be smiling and glad dat you owned the TDM...

First Impressions.

Approaching the bike, your first impressions are size and unusual styling, MCN described it as "supermoto-meets Fazer". This is a big bike, in the Honda Varadero and Suzuki V-Strom mould, although the TDM pre-dates both these competitors. Not only is it tall, it's wide too with a large capacity, fuel tank which blends into the fairing around the top yoke. Getting on the bike is a bit more re-assuring, with the seat height surprisingly low, given thebike's bulk. I'm a lanky 6' 4", so a high seat has never been a problem to me, but shorter riders should be able to get their feet down on this bike, unless they're particularly deficient in the height stakes.

Controls and instruments are well laid out with the usual Japanese efficiency; they've been making bikes for long enough now, they should get it right every time. The rev counter (complete with a dead handy digital clock) dominates the instruments, as is the fashion these days, with a digital speedo / odo to the left and the usual warning and idiot lights underneath. The speedo is a bit more complex than usual and would probably be better described as a mini computer. The readout is in MPH or KPH at the press of a button - great for the ego when blasting down a fast road. There's three odometers and even the fuel injection system can be adjusted from here. No need for a Power Commander on a TDM. The speedo display also displays diagnostic codes in the event of any problems with the bike's complex ECU and array of sensors.

Engine.

Like every bike, the engine is the heart of the machine and carrying on the theme of unusualness, this is no in-line four. Instead, Yamaha have taken a leaf out of a 1950s or 60s edition of the British Guide to Making Motorbike Engines and plumped for a parallel twin. At 900cc displacement; it's a big parallel twin and it's got all the mod cons like liquid cooling, fuel injection and Lord-alone-knows-how-many valves per cylinder. I've never had the head off it, but it must have pretty big pistons - it's essentially two 450cc singles bolted together. However all this moving metal doesn't seem to translate into a lot of vibes. Those clever Yamaha boffins have fitted balancing shafts in all the right places, making the engine relatively smooth throughout the rev range. It doesn't have the turbine-like smoothness of a four, but the vibes aren't intrusive, in fact they add a bit of character. And to add a bit more character, and a yet more unusualness, the boffins have set-up the crank and timing to offer a 270 degree firing sequence, which apparently makes it more like a v-twin than a parallel twin. I don't know how true that is, the only v-twin I've ever ridden was a Harley, and this engine is not like anything that ever left the Milwaukee factory.

Handling.

At slow speeds you're more than aware of how big this bike is. Big, tall bikes are always a bit ungainly at slow speed and it's always taken me a while to get used to the slow speed handling of any bike, let alone one of these dimensions. But, in the case of the TDM, I suspect a lot of it is all in the mind. The upright riding position and wide bars make it easy to manoeuvre at slow speeds. I wouldn't recommend a learner doing their CBT on it, but it is surprisingly easy to dawdle through heavy traffic and on the driveway.

Once underway, things get even easier. It's no sports bike; steering is relatively slow thanks to a long wheelbase, but it turns in well enough for all but the most ardent scratcher. You're not doing to damage your knee sliders on this bike, but that's not because it doesn't handle; it's because you start off a bloody long way from the ground in the first place. The front and rear suspension is fully adjustable, but I must confess that I'm still getting used to the bike, so everything is set at the factory settings for now. It could get even better once I've adjusted to cope with my svelte 14 stone frame. Suspension travel is significantly more than most bikes and it's fairly softly sprung in it's standard settings. The soft, long travel, suspension, coupled with the stunning brakes does cause a lot of fork dive under heavy braking. This doesn't bother me too much as I've a lot of off-road experience, so I'm used to such things. But a lot of road testers have commented on it, so it's something to be aware of if you're coming to the TDM from a sports bike. The brakes on the TDM are taken from the early Yamaha R1, so they're more than up to the job, real eyeball on visor stuff.

Performance.

The TDM900 is considered by some to be the ultimate all rounder, a torquey motor, commanding riding position and supple suspension means that it is a bike that can pile on the miles. With plenty of grunt, the TDM is just as capable of having a decent B-road blast as it is the daily commute to work. It doesn't have the rush of a sports bike, but it is a seriously useful bit of kit. Like most big twins the TDM is happiest sitting in the middle of its strong midrange, peak torque is delivered at 6,000 rpm, but try to rev it like a four and the motor will feel flat. I've found that short shifting is the key to quick progress.

The TDM chassis design makes excellent sense in real word riding too, and is competent at every thing it does. It absorbs bumps almost as well as a trail bike, although the downside of this is that it doesn't feel as composed or sharp as a sports bike when you're going for it, but it's great at the kind of speeds I usually ride at.

Comfort is excellent, the seat/bar/peg relationship is ideal for taller riders like me, and offers good comfort. The screen is too short for me, but otherwise whenever I ride it I get the feeling that the bike and I can tackle anything from potholed British motorways to the Swiss Alps, no problem.

Modifications.

So far, my TDM is totally standard, she still has the standard tyres on. The first mod I intend to do is to up the security so I can sleep at night, and maybe even leave it in a car park for a few minutes while I grab a coffee. A Datatool alarm / immobiliser is due to be installed in a few weeks, along with Datatag marking.

Next up will be a taller or double-bubble screen. This is my one dislike about the TDM, there's a lot of wind buffeting for taller riders at anything above 55 mph. Motorway cruising becomes exhausting after an hour or so.

Finally some hard luggage and a GPS will be going on as I intend to do some touring next summer, starting with a trip to see my Dad who lives in Central France.
