Take How...i was looking and reading the thread carefully and was trying to figure out what would still be the problem...

but let me show you again...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y56/ET_TDM/PICT0016.jpg

see the two heads where we removed the tubes...this is where the coolant goes in...but if you notice mine just now...the 2 heads was black covered with residue...so i believed it is choked...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y56/ET_TDM/PICT0020.jpg

we didnt managed to open up this bugger because of the 2 goddamn screws...

My theory, could be wrong, could be right...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y56/ET_TDM/PICT0021.jpg

the pin that we managed to lub,so that its smoothly moving in and out and clean, however, the coolant that enters the 2 heads mite not be able to reach this pin...causing it to be staying steel instead of going out when the coolant comes in and warm up the actuator...so this process didnt activate the pin causing the not stable idling...

well, this is what the carpedian conclusion..

and the offending part is this stainless steel pin. It was pretty solid, but lightly tapping it back and forth freed it up until I could push it out of the body (you need to take it out from the inside). This was then cleaned, and I used copperslip grease on the pin (I wondered whether it was genuinly road grome, or some electrolytic corrosion between the aluminium and the stainless that caused the partial seizure..??)

what my conclusion is like what i said...the coolant needs to enter the Fast Idle plunger, then as the bike warms, the coolant temp gets hotter, and it activate the pin to engage out and hits the idling on the throttle body that the pin supposed to be resting...

I guess i need to really open up the Fast Idle Plunger to try and sort out this...

what do you think?

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s261/khamizAJ/heymonkeyassdoesthisapprovetobeanalbumname/soloride192-1.jpghttp://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s261/khamizAJ/DSC-0049-2-1.jpg

read his story...and what my conclusion would be slightly makes sense.

For a little while the fast idle hadn't been working properly, so at long last I decided to do something about it. I hope the following will help others. Incidentally the fast idle unit can't be bought as a seperate unit, you can only buy it as part of the complete throttle body assembly, list price about £1300...yes thirteen hundred!!!

SYMPTOMS

Originally the symptom was one of no high idle on start up on a cold engine, making it difficult to start and keep running. After a service, and I can't remember the exact circumstances here...it was months ago...the symptoms chaged to having a fast idle at start up, but then remaining fast.

WHAT THE PROBLEM IS

The fast idle plunger is a little unit screwed onto the front of the throttle body. It has two pipes off the radiator which heat a wax stat. As the wax stat heats it expands, pushing a plunger side ways. This pushes against a slider arrangement (which is sprung loaded) and adjusts the throttle setting (independently to the twist throttle).

All of this is exposed to the elements and the water and spray tends to work into the plunger and seize it up. Hence it can get stuck in one position.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

the repair is simple in theory. The fast idle assembly is held onto the throttle body by two screws. Remove these and remove the two radiator hoses and take it off the bike. The whole thing comes apart with two screws. Free it up, lubricate and replace on the bike. Easy eh!?

well TakeHow...my XR is done...good thing i didnt throw the spring and the bushing...that belongs in the carb...but somehow the rubber O'ring is torned...got it replaced...i think i got distracted by Ang talking to me when i was dismantling the carb...sigh...fixed the carb yesterday...bike back to normal...

havent got time to do the Fast Idle...yesterday to my very shockingly self, after did the XR...i thought of lubricate my chain on the TDM and maybe svc the caliper...i found out that my rear wheel nut that size 32' is not tight...i am able to turn it with my fingers...and the adjustment nuts and position is not balance of left and right...i was thinking what could happen if the Nut came off last Sunday...remember when we all blast on the way back?i was doing like 195km/hr!!!!:giddy:

Thank god...so i was not able to get the nut tightened and the caliper done because i didnt bring down the right tool..

30mins ago...i just did the caliper servicing...one of the 2 size 12' screws jammed...but able to come out..that was also because i was using the T-wrench...one of the screw is badly corroded...tried to scrape it out but only able to scrape some...grease the inside of the rubber tube on both and grease the screws...and lubricate the caliper piston...everythg seems ok..now rear wheel not jammed..but i guess i need to buy one of the caliper screw...its a special screw...so i somehow need to buy it at Auto M...at the same time,i also brought down the size 32' and tightened the wheel axle nut and adjust its position..

So guys, check you rear wheel axle nut before you ride today...

cheers..wow..like doing composition...:cheeky:

Hi pcr,

Welcome to TDM thread! :cheer: and Congrats on ur virgin post!

Hmm.. to answer ur question.. i suppose u shd had gone thru our topics as well as de Vara n Strom pages.... no joke (i thk it take hours or days to complete) Anyway, is really hard to compare lar, like always said, there no best-bike; is always up to personal liking..

Perhaps u can find some of our liking on TDM.. common 1 are like;

1. Light-weight (compare among all de trallies)

2. Its design (personal liking)

3. Fuel comsumption (all TDMers liking)

4. Handling - light n responsive (I find very suitable in sg traffics among class 2 bikes)

5. Low cost part n etc (but see dislike also)

i like this bike most on 1-4.

Dislike,

1. Not very helpful parent (u noe lar)

2. Not all parts available (un-common part have to order n wait... ) perhaps is hardly spoilt :cheeky:

Good Luck in ur search!

Have time, will travel!

Thanks Take How, on doing quickie to my virgin post, and it's such a pleasure to gain so much on your short post :thumb:

jokes aside, i'm also attracted to the few pros highlighted. the low FC is attractive as i've getting 27km/l on my SF. i'm a 6-footer so the higher seat is ideal for me.

do you guys serivce your TDMs in JB? they do a good job for my SF!

anyway, another knows if there will be a 2008 model?

will not spend 2 days thru the vara or vstorm threads. an hour on the TDM thread already peng-san :dozed:

i'll be keeping an eye on this thread & will join some of your local getogethers to know you and your bikes better!
